It's not all about range. Many prople drive less than 30 miles a day. OK the MX30 is not for everyone but it's a damn fine car. The quality and the tech that comes as standard leaves many others wanting. The driving experience and handling in this car it quite exceptional for an EV.. Don't diss a car until you have driven one.

We decided to buy one 2 months ago. My wife likes the way it drives, the interior and the looks. I still have my ICE SUV but my wife doesn't do a lot of mileage so it's kinda perfect for her. I honestly like to drive it also and will often "sneak out" with it for local trips. It handles a lot better than my car with very fun agility in the city. We now have an Autel 48 Amp EVSE at home and this car goes from 20 to 90% in less than 4 hours. Small batteries are lighter and very convenient for local commutes!

Gas prices are BS where I live and I'm a Mazda fan. I'm buying one. I drive around the city all day and can easily get by on the range it offers. I too have heard of people in North America getting 200 km of range out of them so it's all based on ambient temperatures and how you drive it.

It's made to have a range extender, and then it's better balanced. But not in the USA. Besides, not eligible for the rebate. I might consider a used one, though, if the price is really really good. It would cover 100% of my daily drive, and we have a CX-5 for long trips. Maybe this would appeal to rotary engine fanatics.

Sam is spot on. So why did I just order a Mazda MX-30????? Compared to a Tesla Model 3/Y, I prefer the Mazda. I only drive within a 50 km radius around a major city, so the Mazda‘s range is more than fine for me. I recently test drove both of the Teslas and the MX-30.The Mazda‘s drive is much more pleasant, very smooth for an EV, the Tesla IMHO is comparatively rough and unrefined. For me at 1.94 m the Mazda was roomy enough and was extremely comfortable. A much nicer interior than the austere Teslas. It‘s nice to have real switches and buttons for common functions, I really don‘t want a rolling smartphone. A well designed classic dashboard is a delight. Looks of course are absolutely subjective, I for one prefer the Mazda‘s styling. Best of all for me the Mazda is 30 cm shorter, for city driving this is a very big deal. Here in Germany the economics of a Mazda MX-30 are compelling. I personally prefer the auto subscription model, which basically is an all inclusive long term rental. If I look at a 12 month/10,000 km deal, the best price for a well equipped MX-30 is 389€ per month. The best comparable deal for a Model 3 is 649€ per month. At the end of the 12 months I just return the car, no discussion about residual values etc. So what do I have to lose? I pay 3000€ less for the 12 month term and get a car that better suits my needs and that I prefer. At the end of the day Mazda is probably losing a ton of money with the MX-30, especially at this sort of monthly fee. I can‘t imagine they discount the rental company is getting. Sad for Mazda, but that‘s the price of arrogance. Their loss, my advantage.

Totally agree. It is a mystery to me. I drove one of the old models for a day two months ago. It has the range of a city car, but is much too big for this sole use. The worst feature apart from the battery was the back door that you can only open if the front door has already been opened. I heard about the sustainability argument of big batteries and there is a point to it. But if you mean it as a car company, you must improve efficiency and charging speed. I would go for a smaller battery with 800V charging. I could see a use case for this, at least in Europe, where the distances between cities and countries are generally smaller. But a small battery with low charging speed for this price in 2023? My guess is they just want to make the plug in hybrid look attractive next to it.

It's bizarre they've as good as halved the battery pack with the range extender on the MX30. This makes it worse than the BMW i3 REx that I ordered exactly 6yrs ago, it even charges slower! While I switched mine for the biggest battery BEV after 3yrs, the i3 with REx and 33kWh battery holds up well even now as main city car with occasional long journey although it won't have the latest tech.

Big difference in price though. The i3 could get away with it with the carbon build etc at a cost. It makes perfect sense to me to use electric power for commutes, but have the option to do 300+ miles on holiday. You also dont lose boot space like in the i3.

You'd have to have money to burn and be dumb to buy this one at 35K IMHO. If it's strictly a city only vehicle, you can buy a Bolt for less and get the tax credit (markups not withstanding). You can get a Tesla 3 for practically the same price with the tax credit and get double the range. Mazda would need to drop the price at least 10K for this to be viable.

Hi Sam, I have mixed feelings about Mazda. Back in the 90’s their 323 and 626 models were excellent cars, well made and with good reliability, I’m also really fond of the MX5 (Miata). However, the MX30 looks like it was intentionally designed not to sell, as if to prove a point, so much is wrong with this design - Mazda could have been agile enough to make an amazing EV, and they have a loyal customer base to tap into - opportunity lost there Mazda!

I wouldnt be surprised by that. When i did a test drive of one back in March last year, the guy showing us the car really wasnt into EVs, and it looked it was there to show someone what an EV would feel like, but then show them a "better" car that wasn't an EV. Here are some of the batteries that scientists have discovered so far: Lithium-ion batteries, Fluoride batteries, Graphene sodium-ion and graphene aluminum-ion batteries, SLA (lead-acid) batteries, solid-state batteries, Sodium-ion batteries, Nickel & Manganese batteries, and many more. It's a design prototype for years from now when batteries will have several times the energy density. So at least they have otherwise decent engineering started today unlike many bigger competitors. They cannot afford mass EV production at a loss. So selling a future based EV design with limited sales to gather some market feedback (recalls, wear data, user gripes) is what little old Mazda can afford till the legal need and technology catch up in time. Otherwise flamboyant sales numbers now will sink them.

Dreaming. This is an ICE conversion, not an EV concept. Mazda are just straight up being lazy.

No, no and no! I wouldn't buy this "thing" even if it would be very cheap! The MX30 EV is based on completely outdated EV design concept, inherited maybe from 2011/2012...

Looks very ugly. If I had one, I'd wake up depressed every morning just looking at it. This won't even last one commute for me and most people. 100 miles epa, but real-world range I bet all my money would be less than 90 miles. Most people who live in suburbs and commute to big cities for work will need more range. My commute from Riverside to Santa monica is 65 miles one way. My workplace doesn;t have chargers. I would end up stranded on the road. This ev would last me one way, but I won't be able to make it back home lol

The MX30 is, and always has been, a compliance car. Mazda don't want to sell it, so they make sure that it's no good, and set a stupidly high purchase price, ensuring that only the uninformed (I'm being charitable here) will buy it. Let Mazda die in peace. Few will miss them.
