Why fetishize manuals? Above in the moment driving pleasure, for rotary engines they're counter intuitive. The load from the road is going right through to the rotary's tips which we all know are phenomenally reliable. There's so much more than can compliment rotaries. Not just as range extenders or series hybrids, but imagine how it'll perform in Toyota's series/parallel hybrids? Mazda's just acting out as a culture war brand for clout and it's embarrassing to see.

I recently watched a captivating Japanese documentary program called Project X, which delved into the fascinating backstory of Mazda's successful development of the rotary engine. After being inspired by the program, I found myself yearning for the return of the rotary engine to the market. It's a unique engine design that eluded major manufacturers such as Ford and Porsche, but Mazda, a small company from Hiroshima, achieved remarkable success with it. The trials and tribulations faced by Mazda's engineers in creating this engine were truly extraordinary. Additionally, the fact that they dared to place this engine in the Le Mans 24-hour race, where they achieved a victory before being banned due to its unbeatable performance, is a story that deserves to be adapted into a movie.

Toyota Supra and Nissan Z are back. Mazda should build a concept vision model as RX-7 with a tri-rotary twin turbo. RX-7 is my all-time favorite sports car I love. I hope Mazda has a creative vision of the spirit of 1st Generation of RX-7 that rock the world. SUVs are essential to appeal market now, but Mazda needs a "Wow fun car" that save the company back in the 1970s. Go Mazda! Bring RX-7 back!

The point I’m making: Mazda is currently offering mainstream performance-spec offerings (more in the Civic Si VW GTI Golf level, but yeah) I think they’re aiming for Infiniti’s market But let’s look at history- when Mazda made Mazdaspeed 3 & 6 - Enthusiasts STILL Modified them to smithereens. Where did THAT go? Because the Turbo Variants of CX5 CX9 3 AWD Turbo Sedan (Mazdaspeed 6 spiritual successor) 3 AWD Turbo Hatch (Mazdaspeed 3 spiritual successor) Have been in existence for the last 4 almost 5 years now. 🤔

Kirk because of such an vids here I am still holding my 1st gen Mazda 6 Sport in hope something like that in form of new RX or New 6 comes asap as I am so DESPERATE to upgrade but do not want to go away from MAZDA. I'd be really happy with a new Mazda 6 coupe and sedan with the inline 6 engine (rear drive of course). LOVE the squinty headlights of those two concepts. A new RX-7 with a modern rotary would be icing on the cake!

I have a 1993 RX-7 R1 that just had that shitload of work done to it. Plus I'm getting brand new paint on it right now. I'm a huge fan of the RX7 and the rotary motor and if they can make some serious headwind with fixing some of the problems and mass-produce it again I would definitely at some point purchase a brand new rotary powered vehicle

It will definitely be a hybrid. The single rotor version requires an electric motor to speed up/slow down the rotor for timing purposes.

Naw, lots of enthusiasts will buy it. Lots of people that grew up in the 80s and 90s will buy it. Usually, that age group has the most disposable income, and there will be a long waiting list.

I hope they run it with hydrogen to return in 24H of Le Mans together with Toyota. I know they make a hydrogen rotary concept using RX8 and they axed that project due to the heavyness of the Car hoping they make it into production with the help of Toyota.

The rotary engine idea will be great for Mazda, because the engine doesn’t have to produce that much horsepower. It only have to produce enough power to turn the electric motors and that’s it. That should work.

Yes I would like to see Mazda brings back the RX badge from that RX Vision coupe concept (red)body works with Rotary engine with two choice of engine either the Rotary or the new inline 6 turbo like the one fitted with the new CX-90 SUV. That Grey Vision coupe (4ddor) should also come out as the Mazda 6 replacement with the inline 6 turbo engine, that would be an amazing car every Mazda enthusiast are expecting to come into reality in the nearest future. Come on Mazda bring the Rotary back.🏎👍🤣😀

Pros & Cons of Rotaries in short: Pros: >Less moving parts >Pretty lightweight for an engine sometimes more lighter than 4-Bangers >Amazing sounds Cons: >Gas guzzler; drinks more fuel than some good ol' American Big Block V8s >Unreliable; Unless you took a deep dive on the Internet for detailed videos or web pages of guides about taking care of a Rotary engine, *_you're gonna spend more money and most of the time in the garage fixing these little things every 50K miles_*

Pros: The rotary is an extremely small form factor engine that kicks out roughly 2x the power compared to the same displacement piston engine. This small and low center of mass engine allows Mazda to place the entirety of the engine at level and behind the front wheel hub. Meaning the car can have excellent handling characteristics on top of Mazda's already excellent handling designs. Additionally the engines have a controllable smooth torque band that pulls power all the way up through the full 8-9k rpm band. Cons: To achieve that much power, the combustion cycle occurs 2x as fast and produces a significant amount of heat. The main sealing surfaces (apex seals) also have to travel roughly 1.8x the distance of your traditional piston rings per combustion cycle. Due to this amount of wear and heat, any neglect on maintenance will cause an extraordinary amount of wear. Even with perfect maintenance you can only expect ~80k miles before a rebuild SHOULD be done......most people ignore rebuilding and run the seals down even more to get to 120k miles, but this causes irreversible damage to your NON wear items. Most of what you hear online of people having issues with rotaries is purely due to a lack of knowledge and care.

Hello Kirk. A middle engine car means that it will be after and before the front and rear wheels. When you have a front engine, in the event that it's in front of the middle of the front wheels, it's a front engine vehicle. Whenever it's behind the rear wheels, it's a rear engine, such as in a Porsche 911. What other vehicle has this configuration? There was the Toyota MR2, except they don't build them anymore. It was so many years since they had them. Anymore than that? Not that I could remember.

I want to see a three rotor. I had a 93 fd black tan interior back in 2002 it died in a cloud of black smoke. I pulled the engine myself and was going to rebuild it but had to move states so I sold the engine to some kid and the guy who bought the roller shipped it to Bulgaria. I wish I never sold it never had another sports car that was that much fun got so much love and so much hate. Im looking at rx8s now. Can’t wait to work on it more than I drive it like my fd.

Kirk, you didn't know that the third generation of the RX7 is currently my absolute favorite car. Why? It's because of that incredible rotary engine. You saw those combustion chambers on the sides of those rotors. Look at the ends of those spark plugs. What do you see? I'll type what you don't see. Large holes around the ends of them. It's about time they shrank them. Why? What's the problem with those large round holes? Fuel will transfer from rotor face to those in front of them. By ridding the spark plugs of those large holes around, the fuel will stay within that face of that rotor, not going to the next of them..

Toyota brought back the Supra (even though it's basically a BMW), and now they have the Corolla GR. Honda has the Type R. Acura brought the Integra back (even though it's a mid-life crisis car). Nissan brought the Z back. I have been waiting eagerly for Mazda to revive the RX.

I hope to see a performance rotary again but I am so happy to see this new motor. I really believe in this concept and think the rotary is perfect for this application in a hybrid daily driver vehicle. The current hybrid systems in cars just do not make sense. Having an electric drive with a small generator motor to extend range just seems more economical.

As far as I know, one of the big problems with rotaries is that they burn oil that's used for lubricating the apex seals. Hence people blocking off the oil supply to the apex seals and compensating for it with 2 stroke premix oil, that is meant to burn off cleanly without residue. It would help with longevity but I can't see that being helpful for passing emission standards. I think that's where the real problem lies, more so than EGR, vibrations, or compression cavities...unless they can use those to lower emissions to where feeding 2 stroke oil to the seals becomes an option

The aftermarket has refined this engine. We now know what metals to use for apex seals. Side note: VW had a concept car with a dorito motor and supposedly got 170mpg. This was in the 90s early 00s

There will always be a sedan market. I will never get a crossover. That new Inline-6 will be perfect for this design, so it would make a lot sense for Mazda to actually build these cars.

In the 70’s I owned 3 RX3 and Cosmo and rebuilt 4 engines. With the Hydrogene fuel it is going to be a great engine

What’s the reason Mazda discontinued the rotary engine? Was it because of engine issues? Usually manufacturers just keep producing things that break down. Was it because sales were not good? Answer those questions and it’ll give you an idea of whether they’ll bring it back.

Emissions regulations from the EU forced Mazda to cut corners on reliability with the RX-8’s Renesis engine, leading to the bad rep that car gets. The RX-7 13b engine is more reliable, but doesn’t burn efficiently enough to pass modern standards. The question now is whether they’ve committed the time and resources to utilize their Skyactiv technology, which saves on gas and burns more efficiently, in a rotary engine. The disappointing alternative would be they abandon the technology altogether, and march us all toward the grim future of mandatory electric vehicles 😢

Apart from the EV Vs Combustion argument, cars are generally a bore nowadays. The MX 30 is really lovely and the Rotary hybrid would be super. But I still think Mazda should sell a rotary electric generator to compete with Honda.

Mazda GT form needs to be 3 rotors at least to get the low down torque, turbo or not. That's why Eunos Cosmos had 3 rotor turbo. Better with a 4 rotor where there is so much torque, Mazda can make the car cruise on most efficient RPM wnd not use turbo at all. Wankel is not burn efficient, so turbo actually decreases fuel efficiency.

Why can't Mazda realise that their rotaries can fit perfectly well with Toyota's hybrid drivetrains?

You make no mention of the best attributes of Mazda and Liquid Piston rotary engines and that is they can be easily adapted to run on different fuels Just imagine plant oils where you fill up at the local farm

Would love to see this from an engineering innovation standpoint, plus it just looks cool. However, air pollution, arguably attributable to the impacts of global warming, has become a serious concern in the Northeast USA, where I and my family live and breathe the filthy smoky air. I'm also aware that air pollution, partly due to vehicle exhaust, reduces the lifespan of the average American by approximately two years, and costs us trillions in healthcare expenses. While I may from time to time enjoy the throaty roar of a high performance engine, I realize that my neighbors and nearby pedestrians may not. Maybe I'm just getting older, but cars that loudly fart toxic fumes are seeming ever more rude and unnecessary to me, even though I'm still driving one for now.

Sorry but I still do not see this happening. Europe doubles down on on unbelieveably strict emission laws and the end of the comustion engine is already in sight.

I got excited about this, but then I saw that new Mazda x-30 R-EV will have 50l tank that ads 510 KM range...so yeah, 10l per 100KM :) its a disaster....

I love the motor we can't let it die diesel motors put out alot of pollution plus these new rotary seem to be unique
