@@AutoExpertJC Yeah the only rational reason I can think of to spend that $3k, is if you're a traveling business man and you recoup that $3k with the lack of fuel stops if they have the same fuel tank. If you're going from small town to small town selling special things to niche stores, and you saved 20 minutes a day on just filling up, you'd probably make it to 4 more towns, getting 6 more sales per month than you otherwise would have if you bought the other car. Depending on what you sell, you could recoup the money within 3 years, BUT... Here in the US towns are rarely more than 30 miles apart, and I know that's NOT the case in Australia haha, but I hope that this is the rational logic you were looking for:)

Excellent report John. I was expecting somewhat more from the SkyactivX engine, not in straight line performance but in improved economy. I currently drive a 2016 BN Series Mazda3 SP25GT and was looking forward to the X engine as a replacement in the next year or so but, with a $3k price hit over the standard G25 Astina, I’m no longer so sure this is the replacement car I want. Personally, I think I’d rather wait and see if Mazda Australia can get Japan to release a RHD version of the Mazda3 2.5 Turbo just announced in the USA. I suspect that driven sensibly, it may prove to be only marginally less fuel efficient than my current 2.5 with the benefit of a lot more go when I need it. I just can’t see Mazda selling too many X engines in Australia, at least not in its current form. And as you imply, this may not be a good time to be an early adopter.

Hi John, Great analysis, thank you. Very well presented and calculated. Always appreciate calcs like this as easy to comprehend. Regards the more 'informal' presentation style, yes, it works well. I think the subject matter dictates which style works better. For news items and factual reporting I think the 'straight down the camera' style may be best. For items where some raw hands-on opinion, casual conversation and perhaps more technical stuff involved (like today/Mazda) then the style you used today is better. One thing I will mention, I find myself laughing more in the more formal presentations with teleprompt. I can only imagine this is due to the planning and prepping for the jokes as they usually work very well (not to mention the glorious MongMoles-YESSS!). Either way, simply happy to get 'some' content from you because if I'm not laughing I'm at least learning (or both together!) so there's that and I love it. Sorry if I'm a bit clumsy the way I'm saying all this but bottom line is that you're always good value either way!

Excellent mech eng detail. I bought a Mazda CX-30 a month ago via your recommended supplier. Great car . The cX-30 Skytec v 2 litre motor has 14 to 1 compression which quite high as you know anyway and uses the cheaper fuel. I agree with you completely. Two diffetent friends had Mazda 6 cars, both with big problems in the high tech steering that costs a fortune to fix so they just live with the crapy steering. Great show John. Thank you.

In addition to the break even point, there are other factors to consider. The durability of this engine over time, the additional costs for servicing on this engine, and the fact that part of the price increase is to offset the development costs. Three grand (plus any additional service costs) is better in my pocket than Mazda's.

Enjoying the format John. I guess the question to ask for those contemplating a baby Mazda is does the X engine drive "torquier" compared to the 2.5 and does the compression combustion affect NVH? The fuel used is a good point. I can't believe engine technology has moved so far that a 3.3 litre 202 Holden engine provided about 100kW from leaded low octane fuel and the 3.3lt Kia motor makes 270 kW from unleaded low octane. And it does it without flat spots and gets good fuel economy if you aren't getting happy with the throttle.

Having bought a Mazda3 6 months ago (with some form of Skyactiv engine), you cannot believe how hard it was to try and get any sort of info on what is the best fuel to use in terms of km/l or km/$. This video is the first time I have found anyone actually discussing the issue (although for a different variant of the engine unfortunately for me).

I have a 2013 mazda 3 with the 2.0 Skyactive engine. 250k miles, not a single problem. Still runs great.
