It’s not the best book adaptation, but I think it’s a very solid series. I’m still a bit torn on some of their changes to make it not as much sci-fi but it grounds it in more reality.

After re-reading the books and comparing them to the movies, I must say Scorch Trials and Death Cure in film form are a lot better than the books imo. The books feel a bit disjointed after they leave the maze but the movies always had the benefit of taking creative liberties from the start so they could establish those changes in the first movie to make it seem less jarring when they do leave the maze. I really liked these movies when I watched them for the first time and I think they hold up amazingly. The cg, the acting, the story changes and atmosphere, everything just works. This might be an unpopular opinion but I think the movies are just better than the books LOL

I feel like Gally was one of the few parts the movie handled better than the book. In the book they spoiled the surprise by basically having a right arm member just come out and say “hey btw Gally is alive” what feels like so many chapters before they ever meet face to face and even then he spends most of the book as a background character that just says “ok you do this Thomas and I’ll see you at the end of the book” Here it’s dumped on us and the characters like ripping off a band-aid, forcing out more raw emotion when Thomas beats his ass immediately afterward, plus, Gally has more hand in the movie’s events, taking part with Thomas in all the espionage

Sheer luck, basically. The spear missed Gally’s heart. The bullet didn’t have that problem with Chuck (and even if it did, Chuck was a lot smaller and younger, so even a near miss could do enough damage to be fatal. Bullet wounds aren’t as clean as you’d think).
