The pacing of this movie was a little weird . The next movie fixes that in my opinion! and also you get more backstory and character development for some characters. The third movie came out later because Dylan Obrien got seriously injured doing a stunt for the movie(He had to get reconstruction surgery and he still suffers from some PTSD because of it )

The most disappointing thing for me about this movie, is they had the chance to highlight why cranks are different from zombies, and they didn't do it. The flare takes weeks months to make you go insane, not cannibalistic, though the insanity means cranks are eventually cannibalistic, but mostly insane. Even when past the gone, cranks can speak, even though it's clearly messed up. And infections take a long time to be noticeable. A notable group of minor characters from this book are the 'Rose stole my nose' guy and his messed up friends. It really cuts you how these people feel like parodies of humanity, and the movie failed to deliver that. It's a fine movie, just not a movie adaptation.

Idk I get where ur coming from but I honestly liked the movie adaption. I kinda liked that instead of doing the second round of trials with the one group of girls and one group of dudes they had the escape. Also I personally didn’t mind that they went in the WWZ route for the cranks bc I thought it still delivered the high tempo intense action. However I do understand that some people would prefer the book cranks. I guess in the third movie they get a lil closer to the books cranks with the lady in the tunnel and the knife fight at the end (I’m being vague in case people haven’t seen the 3rd movie)

It always strikes me how brutal young adult books really are, and how much they have to be toned down for the screen. The plot and events of this film are almost entirely different from the book, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But in the book people have their heads cut off by liquid metal which effectively turns their heads into bowling balls, have their limbs amputated and eyes melted by lightning, and are ripped apart by monsters worse than the Grievers

DO NOT JUDGE THE MAZE RUNNER SERIES BASED ON US RECOMENDING IT AFTER YOU WATCHING THE HUNGER GAMES. The movies are NOT the same. We recommended them because we saw that you enjoyed one dystopian style series and MAY enjoy another. The Maze runner is a different beast all together. The way you are feeling is how you SHOULD feel as a viewer. You are supposed to be almost as confused as the characters themselves. Remember, the character's have NO MEMORIES of their past. There is not a starting character depth for you to grab hold of, just like for the characters. The party scene was because The Cranks, Marcus/Blondie and his crew wanting to drug Thomas and Brenda and interrogate them. However, their plans get thwarted and the teens get rescued. Again, the overall confusion is purposeful, you are not meant to know more about the world nor the characters than what they themselves know. The Hunger Games had an in-your-face obvious "enemy", but The Maze Runner has endless deceit and betrayals; you can never be sure of whom IS an enemy or ally. Also, The Last of Us came out in 2013. Meanwhile The Maze Runner was published while I was in middle school in 2009 so...no, they are not copying any other examples you likened the movies to. The portrayals in film, obviously, are very similar because Hollywood does not know of any other way to really portray a zombie or crazed/raged humanoid monster. :)

We learn a number of things during "The Scorch Trials." We learn that the immunes can treat the Flare, but they can't cure it. The whole idea behind the Trials is to create something like engrams in the brain which would alter the brain's chemistry and so the enzyme which is used as a treatment. The idea is that if the right combination of engrams is produced through the Trials, which are complex and terrifying puzzles to solve, a cure might be found. It's the trilogy's McGuffin, so you can't read too much into it, however. When Thomas and the other survivors arrive at Jansen's facility, none of the immunes is a cure. At Jansen's facility, phase two begins. Phase two consists of virtual Trials which explains some of the headgear on the immunes. At the same time, the enzyme is being extracted directly from their brains. Presumably this is for efficacy testing as well as use in treatment. In our hero's adventure-journey, Theresa clearly represents the monomyth's temptress who tries to derail Thomas. She doesn't tempt Thomas with sex, but with arguments both logical and emotional advocating WCKD's viewpoint. It's reasonable to suspect her from the very beginning. Unlike Thomas, she completely broke the Glade's paradigm. Her arrival in the Glade is untimely, she's female, and she heralds the end of the Glade's supply lifeline. Totally inauspicious. Kaya Scodelario does a good job of making her character seem suspect from the get-go. There always seems to be a mistrust-invoking aura about her. In the "Scorch Trials," she tells Thomas "Everything was fine until you ...." This implies she never approved of what he'd done. Thomas' drug-induced dream-vision at Marcus' party makes it clear Theresa wasn't part of Thomas' betrayal of WCKD. Thomas obviously acted alone. The longer Theresa is in contact with Thomas through the first two films, the further she seems to move away from him. This begs the question of why Theresa was sent to the Glade. In the first film, Thomas himself even asks her if she's sure she doesn't remember more of her past life. Does he have some subconscious doubt about her? There are interesting parallels between Theresa and Thomas. Both Theresa and Thomas are betrayers. Which one is evil depends on your answer to the films' theme: Does the end justify means? They both want a cure for the Flare. However, Theresa/WCKD are ruthless in pursuit of a cure, willing to sacrifice however many immunes it takes. Thomas, on the other hand, is completely altruistic. He will sacrifice himself but not others. One wonders if after Thomas stung himself in the first film, he doesn't remember more than he lets on. He acts like he does. He seems to know why he was put into the Glade. Earlier, he told Newt and the others he didn't recognize Theresa, but we know he did. Very uncharacteristic of Thomas to lie. Does he have subconscious suspicions about Theresa and not want to give voice to them? Or is he afraid admitting he knows Theresa will make the Gladers more suspicious of him? In the second film, the purpose behind Thomas' questioning by Jansen may be to ascertain whether Thomas can be rehabilitated and brought back into the WCKD fold. Thomas clearly was a valued asset to WCKD before his fall from grace. If he'd passed Jansen's test, he would have had his memory completely restored like Theresa apparently did. After Theresa's memory is restored, it's increasingly clear Theresa approves of WCKD and its means. She even begins subtly showing disgust or animosity towards Thomas. Her reaction as she looked at the handheld radio at Jorge's hold sealed the deal. She is going to betray Thomas. The only question was under what circumstances, although you might assume it'll happen when the maximal harm will be done. In "Scorch Trials" we discover why Thomas was put into the Glade. He'd betrayed WCKD to the Right Arm. Specifically, he informed the Right Arm about the locations of all WCKD's facilities. Presumably, Thomas was sentenced to the Glade in lieu of immediate death because he was an immune, and WCKD didn't want to "waste" his death. In other words, the prospective trauma his death might cause the other Gladers which might enhance the efficacy of their anti-Flare enzyme. His WCKD tag readout at Jorge's did say "To be killed." On the other hand, since Thomas was the best and brightest of the immunes, WCKD may have hoped he'd serve as a catalyst for the Gladers and bring the experiment to completion. That's certainly what happened. So, they may have intended to send him to the Glade all along, and he just made it easier for them. That said, it's clear from what both Jansen and Ava Paige say in the second film that they want Thomas back in WCKD. He clearly was important before the Glade, and his importance to WCKD may have increased afterwards because he did successfully solve the maze. What does Ava Paige say at the end of the first film: "Thomas continues to surprise and impress. He may be the key." There's an especially interesting scene near the end of "Scorch Trials." WCKD has seized control of the Right Arm base because of Theresa's treachery and is ready to evacuate the immunes and kill the Right Arm personnel. Thomas, who had escaped, surrenders himself. This is really an act of desperation. He has a bomb, and he's trying to make a bargain with WCKD. He suspects WCKD wants him. This is confirmed by Jansen who says: "Where's Thomas?" He might not like Thomas at this point, but he wants him alive. Thomas threatens to blow himself up unless WCKD releases the immunes, but WCKD rejects his offer. Here's where Thomas being selfless to a fault has hoisted him onto the horns of a dilemma. If he kills himself, he accomplishes nothing. Yeah, he escapes WCKD, but he doesn't save the others. Saving the others is his goal. He doesn't care about himself. When the others indicate they are willing to die, too, to escape WCKD, Thomas has a tough choice to make. Does he kill them all. Again, yes, they escape WCKD, but Thomas really wants them to live and live free from WCKD. If he relents, then they are all under WCKD control. He doesn't want that, either. There is the dilemma. The choice should be the one that's the closest to the actual objective. That must be life, of a sort, under WCKD. While there's life, there's hope. But that doesn't seem to be the direction Thomas is inclining towards. It would have been a mistake for Thomas to kill them all. Theresa and Ava Paige plead with Thomas to relent. Ava Paige even tells him "Everything can go back to the way it was." In other words, Thomas can have his memory back and rejoin WCKD. She meant it, too, because Ava Paige was actually a foster mother for Thomas. The brutal killing of Mary by Jansen coupled with this counteroffer from Ava Paige, which may have tempted him, may be what was pushing Thomas towards blowing them all up. Fortunately, Jorge rescues Thomas from this dilemma. The tragic irony is that WCKD should have accepted Thomas' offer and let the other immunes go free. "Scorch Trials" is a very good sequel to "Maze Runner."

She mysteriously vanished almost at the very beginning and appeared under really odd circumstances, disappeared again, and shows up leading group B. I'm actually quite lenient with changing the plot. If you've ever read The City of Ember, and then watched the movie, they do some interesting bit of plot with the main characters father, which wasn't even suggested in the book, but it didn't stray very far out of the way and tied to the rest of the movie well. I’m pretty new to the channel, but have y’all ever watched “the 100”?? I started it out of boredom one day and it’s actually pretty good. At least most of the seasons are. I’ve watched a few of the seasons more than once.

I don't know if you guys take recommendations on this channel directly or if it was on ur podcast, but I would recommend the 100. It starts off kind of ehh, and then shit gets real, and it's really interesting. It's like a survival show. I love watching your guys reactions to many of the shows/movies that I love. You guys are always entertaining, and I love your insights.

I just saw your next reaction go up and didn’t realize I missed this one, so here I am! This is the last movie of the trilogy I watched in theaters. I tried to give this movie a chance, but we were robbed of something brilliant. In the books, “cranks” are not like zombies at all. They think, speak, wield weapons, etc. they are humans who have lost all or most of their sanity, making them unpredictable and terrifying. Instead we get… just another zombie flick, and we miss out on nose man! He’s just a crank down in the tunnels whose obsessed with noses, and I believe lost his or cut it off. Either way, it’s *horrifying* in the best way, and they took that from us. I’m going to watch the next one with you guys and see how they end this trilogy of films.

yeah having read the books before the films came out, there was a big difference with this second film and the themes and concepts of the book that were quite abstract and hallucinatory, and I guess hard to capture on film ( as always i think you get way more into characters in books ), and I was left feeling a little off with the 2nd installment. But as mentioned down below, they definitely step it up in the 3rd part - despite there being entire themes missing. Hopefully you enjoy the next part :)

The idea of WCKD not shooting them is because they can't kill the product. They needed to have non lethal weapons so they could capture them. What's off about the characters is that you have to be filled in who they are because the connected ones aren't remembered by Thomas. So there is disconnect by default. At least IMO
