Almost had the same meal on 1 Jan! Except had corned beef(really excellent too), cabbage, potatoes and carrots with biscuits(bread roll) and creamed corn casserole. Cooked mine in a slow cooker for 4 to 5 hrs. Put it on at 10:30 hrs and we were eating it all at 1500 hrs. oh...and the leftover meat; we made Reuben Sandwiches the next day! Yum, My Favorite sandwich!

Here in the US it's corned beef and cabbage which is eaten on St. Patrick's day especially on the East Coast in New York and Boston. You would never find it in Ireland. Strictly an American thing. Corned beef is actually a method of curing a beef brisket that was brought over from Eastern Europe to the US by Jewish immigrants in late Victorian times. The mixture of Jewish and Irish populations in the inner cities of places like New York and Boston produced the dish.
