I get where the question asker is coming from. Being constantly complimented on their accent, while done with good intentions, just makes them self-conscious about the fact that they are seen as a foreigner. It's an act of Othering, which, again, is not done out of malice but is done nonetheless.

It's also really really patronising and condescending. "Oh cool you didn't listen to anything I said huh"

Q: Why do Americans love English accents? A: Stockholm Syndrome
@calebduarte52554 жыл бұрын
Nah, that would be Swedish accents

The answer is imperialism conditioning entire cultures to subconsciously perceive England as elite/special and y'all just gotta fucking deal. Congratulations, you played yourself, The English.

Travis is kind of right though. There are only about 10 or 15 distinct Accents in the US, but there are like 40 in the UK probably a lot more and it's a much smaller area. It's because accents, and language in general, both evolve just like humans. You find a lot more genetic diversity in Africa than anywhere else and the same is true of language diversity. So they shouldn't have shut him down like that

I think Harley Quinn said it best in the Suicide Squad: Americans love accents cause they don’t got none. She said, in a thick New York accent.

I know people get to complain about their problems and all that, but hearing a person complain about people loving his European accent is really annoying when your parents/relatives have been mocked your entire life for having a non European accent

How. US has like an accent per square mile.
@ViewerEm3 жыл бұрын
@@caterinagerbasi1594 he was saying that since people in the US intermingle more, they're used to other US accents to the point that they aren't a really big novelty. Same thing with English accents in the UK, they all are used to it. So when people go overseas, they're exposing people to an accent they don't often hear.
@clanofclams2720 Жыл бұрын
@@caterinagerbasi1594 there are minimal differences between accents in Maine or in Nevada or California or Washington or New York or Montana or Idaho or Wyoming or Massachusetts or Maryland or New Hampshire or Ohio or in any location that's not the deep south.

Imagine being annoyed because someone basically just thinks you have a cool voice. Like, I know a lot of people write into the show with really minor problems (it’s a comedy podcast, after all) but they are usually...still problems. Sorry for the rant, but humble bragging with zero self awareness always sets me off in a way that not much else does.

Why are crumpets the only food Americans think we eat? I have some online friends I play games with and they keep making jokes about me eating crumpets. I don't even like crumpets! They're rubbery and horrible! Stop with the crumpets! Scones with jam and clotted cream (not gravy??) are far superior.

I will say there's nothing like a nice warm crumpet with butter and honey on a cold day.
