I bought a 1967 Whaler 13 with a tohatsu 40 HP 2002? just to play around with in the bay… So much fun. It Really gets up and goes. Being some what a flat bottom boat my wife and friends I put up front get a little beat up towards the bow when in some boat traffic. Me sitting in the back I'm ok. When it is flat in the bay and you can open it up... so much fun. At around 4,500.00 to 5,500.00 you shouldn't have any problem picking one up. Well worth the money.

Really good with that old Whaler. Get the lower unit replaced, make sure it's mounted high enough, with the plate just above the hull rear edge (by straight edge measuring), make sure that prop allows the rpms to hit 5500+, trim the motor out more and have just your son drive. It'll probably do 40+.

Adjust the throttle cable, you should, well I don't know... I haven't been THERE.. You should get about 42/44 out of it... VERY NICE FLOAT INDEED.. I love it.. Beautiful.. And what a lucky little man you have there.. God bless you folks..

I have a 14 Dauntless from 1999 with a 2003 50 johnson on it and top speed has been 33 mph, empty weight is around 1000 though so its a heavier boat with a very deep v for its size.

I have a 1972 whaler with almost the same set up with the bench seats, it appears to me you own the sourpuss model like mine. The sourpuss had the wraparound railing behind the back bench. The only things different with mine and yours are the year, i have 92 or 93 johnson 40hp, and differnt setup in the back with oil, gas and battery, also the dashboard is different on mine, and the interior paint is now white (previous owner just painted over the blue). I also dont have bottom paint on mine. And have a newer steering wheel.

if you both sit on the back seat/helm seat you will hit 34.5 with trim..... not bad at all for a 40hp.

Do you know the shaft length of this motor? I am wondering how far under the boat the prop is... I have a Dory 13 and contemplating a 60 HP Merc because the 30HP that's on it is a bit under powered and I got a deal on a 60HP motor. The 60 HP has a 20 inch shaft so I will likely have to jack it up. This will be over powered on this boat but I can reduce the torque moment by pitching the prop lower (down)...and I can always limit how hard I push it....

I am not sure but you should definitely get it and don't change the prop. Or do and make it faster. Live on the edge.

@@bicvarcarapic6619 We routinely go out with 4 people. 2 adults and 2 teens. 25 MPH max speed with 30 HP. We tow the kids on a raft 18-22 MPH no problem. 260Kg - 300Kg no problem.

What did you pay for it? I have had my eye on one on craigslist that has been restored with a 2003 40hp merc. Sure is pretty, they are asking 4500. The motor seems a bit heavy for that size boat to me, what do you think?

I have a 94 Yamaha 40 horse 2 cylinder - 2 stroke on my 76 and it runs 38 miles an hour. Lighter weight than four 4-stroke, runs most of the day on 6 gallons of gas. Custom made stainless steel raker prop makes lots of difference. 2 large adults and a full load runs 35mph. I weigh 235 and outran identical boat driven by a small child with a brand new 40 - 4 stroke Mercury. Two-stroke is worth the oil mix. Also have a Montauk 17 with 135 - 73 Evinrude that runs 43, smooth as glass. Can't beat Whalers...They're the boats other boats wish they were.

Never Mind Are you the same guy that says a 13 won't run with 20 hp? Mine planes with a 9.9 Johnson. Proper propeller match makes it possible. My 40 Yamaha is 2 cyl., lightest 40 made, gets better range than you want to believe. Your lunky 4 stroke is 125 lbs. heavier & slower.

I have had it for these years and have never gotten even a little water in the boat even in the roughest waves. It is super stable to fish out of, you can stand anywhere in it hardly even rocks. For a small boat it is quite remarkable. I guess this is why people talk about them all the time!
