Fix it up patch the damaged spots with the correct materials. Put either a couple of swivel seats with cushions and a backrest or a cooler seat. Get a 40HP tiller outboard and you can have an awesome boat fishing tubing.

Hi wayne, stevie from scotland here. Been a fan of the boston whaler since i was a kid. A number of years ago i picked up a 17 foot rigid raider with centre console cathedral hull foam core unsinkable, allmost identical to the whaler, made by a uk company called RTK marine. It was made for the royal marines as a raiding craft. I bought it for £700 with all the fittings the hull was in near perfect condition, i managed to source the correct engine for this boat which was a suzuki 140 hp,it bolted straight on original bolt holes no drilling. Absolute flying machine very smooth and manoeuvrable, as you would say in the states it could turn on a dime. It took my brother and i several months to to get it up and running to a level we were happy with we kept the cammo paint it had all the stainless fittings it could be lifted by helicopter etc very well engineered for abuse by the military. Always liked the boston whaler, i think yours would make a great long-term project but its how much money you throw at it. Be great to see it fully restored. Just my two cents worth, i wish you well and look forward to watching what you do next. Regards stevie from scotland.🚣👍

I was 14 years old when I bought a new 1970 13' Whaler with a 40hp Evinrude and a steel Holsclaw trailer. The trailer lasted abought 5 years in this salt water environment. To remove the boat from the trailer to a new one I simply used the trailer like you did by dropping the tongue but supported the stern placing 2x4's under the gunnels, lifted the tongue and another set of 2x4's at the bow and drove the trailer forward enough to reposition the bow 2x4's. In 1970 I paid $1400.00 I earned by painting boat bottoms at a local marina on weekends. BTW my sister and her family now use that Whaler! Not bad for 54 years of use.

Cannot wait to see the solar project! Very excited I found your channel. I just purchased a 1970 Nauset whaler are used to be the Secret Service vote for President Bush in Kennebunkport Maine. I’ve been learning everything I can about whalers now. I’m hoping my little boat goes forever, and I’ve always got the option for solar. Can’t wait to see what you do.

Where the floor meets the sides mark a line two inches from the side on the floor all the way around. Cut along that line and pull the floor up. Then remove the foam on the floor. Repair the fiberglass and the wood inserts and mix up some expanding foam and poor it in. Cut the foam level with the foam you cut out. Then install fiberglass mat and resin and sand and enjoy.

Take it from someone who had a 13 ft Whaler. If the hull is waterlogged it’s not really worth it to restore it. I believe it’s always better to spend a little more and get something that is in working order.

The solar boat project sounds very interesting. I’m off to Canada to help a friend from work both retired now. He has an old pontoon boat he electrified and charges everything solar. He’s an engineer I’m going to help him put new marine ply deck on it. Also repair and or replace some railings etc. I’m retired carpenter in Detroit, he’s north of the Soo in Canada. Nice to see old whalers repurposed; solar would be interesting. Yes, there is plywood in the cockpit sole, transom, and various hardware mounting locations. However, there are no plywood longitudinal or transverse stringers as in many older conventional single skin boats. The foam "injected" (actually poured and rises under pressure) into the inner/outer hull cavity bonds the 2 "skins" to create a one piece structure. The cockpit sole plywood generally rots from water intrusion because of equipment screwed into the sole without using a sealant or sealant that has deteriorated. Same with the transom. Your "floor" has evidently failed and I would not screw anything into it. Water intrusion into the foam from outer hull damage appears to have occurred as well. The hull is really too rough to restore unless you want to lose your savings. Two saturated foam options: Prop the bow up, drill larger holes in the outer skin hull bottom aft and let gravity work. Heat lamps to draw the water have also been used. Wait a year. Second option: since the "floor" has failed, cut it out and dig out the saturated foam and patch the hull outer skin from the inside. Glass in a new plywood floor (lots of fitting) and use pour flotation foam to completely fill the void between the outer hull and new "floor". NO VOIDS. This rebuild won't be as robust as the original build but you will be operating at much lower speeds. Good luck and look forward to seeing the electric whaler!

Please don’t butcher that boat. It would be such a shame if you did anything other than try to get it back as close to original or pass it on to someone who would. People dream of getting a Whaler and this would be an opportunity for you or someone else to gradually bring it back to its original shape.

I have considered a solar roof for shade and battery charging in a canoe, yeah a bit crazy when the wind picks up. Now a 14-17 ft boat is a whole nother animal. Solar is pretty cheap in a 400 watt config. Above that the controllers get more expensive, but this is a neat idea.

What a magnificent vessel. Those repairs are definitely from the "Time is money, and we ain't got any. Make it work." school of thought. Seriously, anything is possible with this boat. I like the solar idea, I have seen a crabbers boat in tx (18 Carolina skiff) that essentially has a t top the width of the boat bow to stern. It would give you tons of space for panels and shade 😎Also after your boat building class routing out the old deck and tabing in new plywood wouldn’t be bad, just forgot that the foams wet and leave it alone 😂.

A simple way to make sure it’s not taking on too much water is to let it sit on the trailer for a few days and then weigh the rig all together, hit the water for at least 4 to 6 hours and then weigh the rig again, any added weight is going to show up and if it’s not outrageous then just repair all the bad areas and paint the bottom. Plenty of options for you but don’t butcher it so that if someone wants to bring it back they will have an easier time. Also next time you want to remove it from the trailer, strap the boat the the tree behind you and pull forward slightly and block and repeat

I would like to take one of these size boats and put a fiberglass shell of a single cab truck on it, with the cab open to rear. The real question would be would you put the helm on starboard side or right side (boating standard) or port side the standard in the US left hand drive. It would either look goofy in the boating world or automobile world.

A lot of wasted effort and time pulling the trailer from under the boat: after jacking up and supporting the stern you should have carefully jacked up the bow (keel) as high as needed-add a crossmember possibly a 4 x 4 OR a steel I-beam which the length is wider than a trailer is wide-placing the “bow-support” under keel-supports on each end lower the boat (provided there is sufficient clearance) to pull the trailer out and there you have it!!! Solar concept is great- solar panels on shore charging your batteries.

I think if you're going to do it as a solar project, fixing the previous poor repair jobs would be something that "should" be done as well. If it was a work boat, that has to be why the cosmetics weren't of any concern. Making it "like new" wouldn't be worth the effort unless you could recover some of those expenses by selling it... It will be interesting to see the progress...

In its current state, if I need to relocate a post, or move components around it's no big deal. if this was a pristine hull, I'd hate to have to drill a second set of holes.

When will you learn Wayne !! In a boat you dont know if it will float and not wearing your life jacket ! Its ok you having them but if you both fell in who is going to throw the buoyancy jackets ? Come on mate at least have half a brain when it comes to water safety. Say you both fell in and another boat comes along and hits both of you knocking you both out. How is your partner going to feel if you both drown knowing that if only you put on your "Safety gear" you two would still be around. Respect the water at ALL TIMES Please man wear the gear and stay safe

Yes, it is best to always wear a PFD. However, the on the water segments were recorded in safe conditions including: Very shallow and warm water. Several 'spotters' nearby on a 6 MPH speed restricted creek. Recorded on a day with almost no other boat traffic.

Don't take on this project ! A good Boston Whaler with a sound hull, even rough, is worthy of restoration .. This Whaler needs to go to the final resting place fro old salty dawgs ..

@@WayneTheBoatGuy nah just run it as is. It floats. Project something a little better to start off with.
