What touches me most about this guy, this Ry Cooder; is how he is always so willing to let other musicians take the lead, let them fully express themselves, notwithstanding his own greatness and musicianship! This guy is a real mentor and performer!

Only Ry Cooder had the foresight to bring all these great musicians together. This is a once-in-a-lifetime happening although I know they had other performances together. Thank you Ry Cooder and all the members of this performance. Ry is the King of vibrato whether playing here or with a slide.

I met Ry Cooder at Lloyd Bagg's studio in LA back in 1979. Both Ry and I were just picking up our guitars that Lloyd had repaired so we chatted and played some songs for each other. I had no idea who he was, but after I heard him play I tried to recruit him into my band. He graciously declined. After Ry left, Lloyd played me some of his records, and I've been smitten with Ry's music ever since. The thing I love most about Ry's work is his focus on authenticity and history. With him a song is not just a tune, but rather a living artifact, which a great many souls have touched, molded, and in turn have been touched and molded by. This performance is a great example of that. He actually looks like he's sick, and his voice is so hoarse, but all of that imperfection helps to convey the message of the song - the despair and desperation, with Irene the only salvation slipping away, at the very edge of ending it all, and the final forlorn call to others to change their wicked ways and live clean, lest they suffer a similar fate.

Thank you for this great reminiscence. I’m an ole lady guitar & ukulele player and have been a fan of Ryland since the eponymous vinyl album with the Airstream trailer down to his Prodigal Son preaching “You Must Unload” in Carnegie Hall. He’s taught me not just great guitar licks & riffs but a great side dose of American history (L.A & California) in his albums and book of stories. I take solace in the portrait he casts of the southland, and his droll, humane understanding of what makes the culture of the borderland so compelling.
The drummer on the brushes is great too. Very mellow.

I've been watching this concert since I first saw it around 200K views for the whole show. One of the most quintessential concerts of those years, so gritty, so raw, so real. All the players are on full bore. However you might try to describe it, it just gets better with time.

My brother played this with his blues harp at the end of my fiancés funeral on a hill in Scotland under a rainy sky . This version of Ry Cooder just meets my emotions, thinking back to that day in April 2004. It made a perfect final to a great but too short life of a very unique, cheerful, openminded, caring and warmhearted person, who loved life, laughter, music - and me. r.i.p. my darling xxx never forgotten Andrea from Berlin/Germany

The comments by is brothers in music move me mightily. this song changed the views of a 14 year old Montana kid. I acquired a 78 of Huddy Ledbetter singing Irene and playing 12 string. It changed my views in ways that I didn't realize at the time. I 1953 I boarded a bus in Memphis Tenn I found I couldn't sit in the front of the bus. To much derision I might add. I didn't realize until much later in life why I probably did it. These songs attach themselves to us in ways we don't realize. Remember I was a 15 year old . Montana hick at the time The blues grabbed me and never let go.

Ojalà viniera a Barcelona alguna vez. :)

This performance is a good example of why Ry Cooder is not the household name of, say, Neil Young or Jackson Browne. He took this song deeper than even Leadbelly, the author, did. It's great work, but I have to wonder what it was like for the audience, expecting some rock 'n roll thrills.

The story goes that Leadbelly, during one of his stays in prison, used to sing this to the warden's wife in the evening when she would come out to tend her garden.
