1) He wasn't the main focus of the advertising 2) He wasn't the main character in the game 3) Social media was still in its infancy in 2002 4) video games were nowhere near as mainstream in 2002 as they are now 5) Way of the Samurai is a lot more niche title even compared to its contemporaries vs Assassin's Creed is now 6) we hadn't yet had the resurgence of fascism and neo-nazism in the west spurred on by things like GamerGate and Trump, which moved counter to the way the rest of Western society has been progressing and became very vocal minorities. I'm not defending their actions or arguments, just pointing out its not an equivalent comparison. And that your conclusion shouldn't be that people overall in 2002 were less racist than they are in 2024.

The only problem I have is them explaining in the interviews how they are using Yasuke as a real historic character, because most people are too dumb to understand that he was not really a samurai and that Ubisoft took a lot of liberties here. This then ends up in people thinking this is actual history and unfortunately this happens with a lot of games or movies/tv shows (woke or not, doesn't matter) that are based in a historical setting. I'd be fine with them not using Yasuke and actually made him another random black samurai. Yes, most of the outrage about it would still exist but at least the history buffs probably wouldn't care as much. It's a lot easier to just say "well it's a game, obviously they're taking liberties with the accuracy" if the character isn't representing a real person that existed.

The thing about Bridget is that, yes there was that past abuse that no doubt influenced who she became later in life (our scars are with us for our life and all we can do is navigate them), but 1) The abuse Bridget went through is basically the exact same abuse from parents a lot of trans youth go through: being denied a gender identity they believe to be their own and forced into a different one. 2) the difference is that Bridget was able to live fully as that gender she was denied throughout her life. She left home. She became independent. And she lived as a man, even if she continued to dress effeminately. And it's fine if that didn't feel right to her. A close friend of mine, after living on their own and being able to live how they want, transitioned to another gender, but still didn't feel quite right about how they ended up, how the world perceived them and how they perceived themselves. They're agender now and feel so much better about where they are at than as a man or a woman. Gender is a messy thing to navigate, as with all self-discovery. And even if I can't deny if her story in Strive isn't a little sloppy, it's more of a byproduct of this being a story in a fighting game that has adapted and changed throughout the past 20 years than it being not a convincing transition storyline. That being said, I don't think you can call anything mid-low tier Testament in Strive has had as "toxic" when the comparison is **+R Testament**. They might be the most toxic character in the franchise.

If Bridget is trans her whole story is basically about how great detransitioning is. She has been forced to live as one gender. Decides that this is not her true selves and proves she is the other gender. After struggling returns to the gender that has been forced upon her. I way prefer the messaging "I'm me." that you get in the good ending. Bridget is Bridget, who cares what others think?

But I do agree aboutthe detransition aspect of her storyline. It's a big factor in why I think it's sloppy, but I don't think that is a reason to prevent the character from being a trans woman. I think that is a criticism to be made against the writing of the game, not a reason to push back against it. I can understand if some people (especially trans people) feel differently. That's just my opinion. But given how her transition into being a trans woman has been received by trans people, I think the awkwardness of the detransition aspect of the narrative is worth the result.

Even if yasuke wasn't a playable character, since we're dealing with nobunaga, he'd still be in the game. So the "admit you wanna play a game without black people" is a tad disingenuous. Nobunaga was an important figure, and with yasuke as his retainer (friendly or enemy) we would see them if the time period allowed it (sometimes that doesn't even matter). I agree the culture war has gotten out of hand in some aspects, things overblown, out of contexts, hell the game isn't out so we're all missing the context Of the game. In terms of history, I agree with farfa, even if you're saying he isn't a real samurai, you're undercutting the position yasuke was in, guard to one of the most powerful men of the era. I think yasuke is cool, let people make what they want to make we can call it trash for being an ass game with an ass story, if it is. Because regardless of it being woke, wouldn't it be nice if the game was good?

It’s an Assassins Creed game, they haven’t been good since Black Flag or for the last 10 years. Ubisoft can’t make a good game to save their lives in general, last release was Skull and Bones. Besides Ubisoft having mediocre writing and their historical revisionism getting worse, actually playing as historical characters is not really what AC has ever been about. Following that point a little further, basically the first time the main character in a mainline AC game is a real historical figure is a black guy in a Japanese samurai era setting, it’s just a teeny tiny bit on the nose.

The love for the series as far as I know was way higher during the AC 2, Brotherhood and Revelations era, went back down I dunno by how much during AC 3 then rose back up for the Black Flag and Rogue era. Went back down again for 5 for obvious reasons and back up but not by much for Syndicate. Note btw, none of this is calculated. This is purely guessing from the reactions during those times. And nowadays, people don't really care about AC anymore. The series has basically become a dumpster fire.

I get people being sceptical of developer intentions here. Anyone who has been playing games for a long time knows that black characters are nothing new, gaming has had many ethnic characters. The concern is probably that this black character is in there because 'diversity'. I think if the game were made by a Japanese developer, there wouldn't be this concern. In samurai warriors 5, there was a black character based on that guy in history and (to my knowledge) no one really cared. Similarly, the anime afro samurai is an anime about a black samurai, and people loved that anime. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are some that 'just hate black people' so they are against this, but it's more likely that they think Ubisoft is trying to misrepresent history. I agree that it's asscreed so who cares, but a lot of the hardcore fans that have stuck around since the first one really enjoy the historical aspect of the series, so maybe a lack of Japanese historical knowledge has led to some misplaced anger. What I don't understand is why anyone would care so much as to get angry. Let's say it was inaccurate, say your peace and don't buy it then move on. (I mean no offense when I say this) I don't really care what KZbinrs have to say all that much, so someone being ok with something I am against doesn't mean much to me. I will listen to the argument presented, but it will influence my thoughts about as much as any random person on the Internet will. So even if it was the case that it's inaccurate, and it was the case that you guys were promoting something with an agenda that I disagree with, i wouldn't care enough to get mad. I do think some of those comments were probably just bait or general trolling, but still mean and unreasonable. That said, I think the terms 'hitler' and 'nazi' are used a little too loosely these days.

The thing is that Yasuke WAS NOT a samurai. He was a bushi and was respected, but he was not at the status of a full fledged samurai. What I don't like because of this controversy is that people are trying to revise history to fit a modern-day narrative which is dangerous. I like Yasuke. I think it's amazing that he went from a slave to a bushi under the leadership of oda nobunaga but I don't believe we need to exaggerate his history any further than that.

I didn't like the farfa video because It glosses over a lot of nuances between "Karate Man" in a children's card game and actual historical feudal japan in media for adults, (in light of some research Yasuke was a historical figure who was confirmed to be of African descent, with black skin and likely muslim. That comment is completely nonsensical. Yasuke was a retainer for Nobunaga who conquered Japan during that period. He's also a rare outsider during a time when Japan was spectacularly insular. It makes him literally a perfect pick for Ubisoft to act as the "agent of a world-spanning secret society that was sent in to influence events in this region" in their historical fanfic. The only reason people are mad is because he's black. No one gave a fuck when William Adams was the sole protagonist of Nioh, but now that a black guy is one of the two playable characters everyone loses their mind. Personally saying that "This whole argument is because the protagonist is black" is something I don't believe to be the case and is a little too far out there, however I do think both sides have their own troubles that are a bit too much regardless on how you want to look at it. I don't see a problem in Ubisoft choosing what they did but I can understand why there might be some people who actually did want a Japanese man set in Japan. I just think pushing for it to be that way leads to both sides acting like idiots. At least Farfa did some good justifiable defense and not like a few other people I have seen do the thing just like the comments in the vid did
