when it comes to most Yugioh products, theres no amount of criticque that is too much. One of the saddest and hardest pill to swallow for most yugioh enjyoers, is that we have THE best card game, stuck in the hands of one of the WORST and GREEDIEST companies out there, that is also super lazy on top of that

The craziest thing to me about the started deck is that they don't use archetypes. The entire game of Yu-Gi-Oh revolves around archetypes. We don't have combo agro control, we don't have red blue black white green, we have archetypes. Imagine the box gave you two separate archetypes that you could familiarize yourself with and learn the combos, then maybe take that archetype to an actual game. Just reprint sword soul or give them invoked, or make new simple archetypes that are playable for them to explore. Because with these decks, not only are they a bad introduction into modern Yu-Gi-Oh, but once you want to try an actual event or locals, the deck you were given is complete trash
@nbassasin809226 күн бұрын
or, hear me out... Konami finally sotps being the a""holes they are, and make it more than 2 separate archetypes, and make like 4-5 different decks that you can choose from to learn mechanics and different types of decks, all of them having different cards and different style of play (some of them being combo, some control) Yugioh could make such an insanely cool beginner box, filled with value and entertainment for people, that could also make them profit, because instead of having 90% profit from the few idiots that buy their product, they could have like 60-70% profit, but from insanely larger number of iditos that would buy their product if it was worht buying Konamis philosophy with yugioh has always been how can we squeeze the most money from our low sample size that we have, instead of actually broadening their reach and profiting less, but from much more people, and Ill never ubderstand the reasoning as to why they are doing this

15:50 tbh they coded in several misplays. probably the worst one, which ive had several people who had NO EXPERIENCE with the game point out, is at the end where they force you to crash so you can make zeus instead of using giga brilliant to boost your monsters and get over the opponents prime heart with rabidragon and then you could still make zeus. its a bit awkward to be like "ok so i know this play sucks but just trust me"

The thing that baffles me the most about this product is that it would have cost them literally no money to make the card pool better, and may have saved money if they shortened the script. I'm perfectly okay with the first couple turns going over the basics, and they are super kneecapped because you can't include any searchers or the script falls apart. But even with those restrictions, I feel like it would have been simple enough to make a more themed deck to give the deck a semi-coherent strategy, and more expensive cards just to boost sales.

I mean, an example of making it snappier: Player 1 sets Bitron, Player 2 plays Lajinn and crashes into Bitron, Player 1 summons Garnet and swats Lajinn. Player 2 learns about Effect Monsters by summoning Cyber Dragon with its own effect and wipes Bitron, Sets a Flip monster with their Normal? Player 1 Sacs Garnet for Summoned Skull and swats Cyber Dragon. That's every major combat type, summoning, effect monsters, + Special Summons in just 5 total turns. The big challenge is that you cannot use a card with a Shuffle effect in a scripted tutorial like this, which prevents a lot of the "Yes, and" combos from working.
@olliezoop26 күн бұрын
I bought this product to play with my wife, since she's always been moderately interested in learning the game. We played with the decks a couple of times, and the biggest issue is that even if you get comfortable enough with the way the game works, the power disparity in the cards between each other is such that you'll draw hands with a spell, an eldlich, and 3 vanillas, meaning the games are slow but really really sacky and unfun, since you really have no way of outing zeus once they draw it. We eventually just started playing goat.

Seriously why can’t the TCG just import the Tactical Try decks and make them into starter tutorials. The Cydra one would be so good. Can retool it with maybe a few more simple cards to start with, but you can easily go from normal summon to battle to special summon and ramp up into two or three different kinds of extra deck types. Then the deck would also include pretty much a normal cyber dragon deck that with a couple enhancements would be playable in a locals environment. Like imagine you bring in the Cyber Dragon and Eldlich ones. Player 1: Cyber Dragon starts, and normal summons Cyber Dragon Core. Uses effect to add Cyber Emergency to hand. Can then activate Cyber Emergency to add Cyber Dragon from deck to hand, and end your turn. Note there are also two other Cores in hand, to show how many cards you can run, along with a Nachster and a Herz. Player 2: Draw for turn, normal summon Necroworld Banshee. Go to Battle Phase, have Necroworld attack Core. Go to Main Phase 2, and set, maybe Scarlet Sanguine. Player 1: Draw for turn, it's a Polymerization. Since you control no monsters, Special Summon Cydra. Then normal summon Core, and add a Cyber Repair plant from deck to hand. Then you can highlight how Core says it's a Cyber Dragon, and in your Extra Deck you have a Cyber Twin Dragon which requires two Cydras. Activate Poly, summon Cyber Twin. Then, highlight Nachster and Herz's synergy, by activating Nachster to discard Herz to summon it. Herz and Nachster then activate allowing you to add a Cyber Dragon from deck to hand, and Nachster can special summon the Cydra you used to Poly earlier back. Can then proceed to battle, using Cyber Twin to attack Necroworld Banshee. You then attack again, but that's when Player 2 can activate the Scarlet Sanguine, allowing you to summon out Eldlich from deck in defense to block. Player 1 doesn't have a monster able to defeat Eldlich, so you end the Battle Phase, but you also don't want to just leave your two guys out there, Eldlich is so big. So instead you teach to link summon off into Sieger, since it has a special "Quick Effect" which can help protect. In just an exchange of 3 turns (Or if you wanted to break it down even more, separate the Twin and Nachster/Herz turns into 2 with another Eldlich one inbetween) which should hopefully follow simple steps to build on, you teach: Normal Summon once per turn Monster Effects both Activated and Persistent Spell Effects Searching/Shuffle Rules Setting and Activating Traps Special Summoning by Monster, Spell, and Trap Effect Basic Rules of Combat 2 Extra Deck mechanics

26:13 I think I've said this before but the honest answer is a video game product designed to take someone on a journey through the game, letting them collect and battle against cards that were relevant for a given era before advancing to the next one. Set it in Duel Academy or in one of the schools from Arc-V or something and have a graduation ceremony between each section where you prove what you've learned by winning an actual duel against a competent deck, and for advanced players maybe have an option to skip grades by winning that battle with a pre-made deck.

>C'mon man, it can't be that bad Bro, it made me get off my ass and make a beginners guide. That video wasn't without its flaws, everyone in the comments asked me wtf a ramp deck is (because I don't particularly agree with calling every deck in this game either control, midrange or combo), but it was still leagues better than Konami's attempt and it tried to appeal to people who may not have ever touched Yugioh before. And I did all that without misrepresenting the actual game. Anyone who watched that video went away learning that Yugioh is a game that usually ends in 2-3 turns. The main issue with the 2 Player Starter Set is that it doesn't prime a new player for the modern game on even an intermediate level. It basically teaches a new player 2006 Yugioh but with synchros and XYZs, which we've criticized products like the Egyptian God decks for as well (those decks are basically just GX era decks with Egyptian God custom cards). It simply fails as an on-boarding product. Like, you can't just nostalgia bait people when the game that existed in the 2000s isn't here anymore outside of Time Wizard. And not even the cards included were any good when it released, Eldlich included. You would've been better off having bought 3 Jack Atlas structure decks and just winging it. The only reason to pick up that product is to buy a copy of Zeus without waiting on shipping. It is an awful product on all fronts. Not even Paul from TeamAPS was able to sugar coat it all that much.

Never. Tactical Try looks less profitable for the TCG market. They don’t see new players in the Western region as a big profit source. Looking at the 2-Player Starter, even though it’s marketed for new players, it feels more like a way to bait old players into buying staples at a slightly higher price. Tactical Try is a better deal since you only need to buy one. I don’t think Konami TCG would favor that approach.

Zombies eiukd be my choice, common concept with a theme appropriate gameplan, can be control or midrange meaning you can justify it being slow but alright, shows what a field spell is and the importance of searching with banshee, effect monsters that can act as vanillas on the field but get effects when destroyed, can show you how to special summon important monsters like balan and doomking, simple initial routes that can take though after you learn but easy to teach basic combos, has 3 of the summoning types included in synchro, link and a fusion, as a pile deck it can feel more classic while teaching skills that can transfer to archetypes, you get retrains of classic monsters like red eyes and scapegoat and it’s easy to build from like unizombie or mekuzi who are in every zombie deck Plus if you add vampires you get tribute lessons (and missing the timing lessons thank you duke), if you wanted add a couple traits and you add eldlich if you don’t want doomking There’s also the treated as effect which comes up but outside if this product you don’t want the plaguespreader synchros

Third set, Continue this pattern forward. Give Reprints to iconic cards that don't have that many reprints, give erratas/Text upgrades to old cards that, by this point SHOULD have them? Give shiny chase rares as the thing that makes veteran players go "Yeah, those decks are meh, but by God that shiny card is FUCKING RARE AND GOOD LOOKING" Add playmats with themes based around the particular era they come from. Give players a bunch of Token cards that are iconic from that era (Read Goat Tokens, or Gorz Tokens). Price gouge people the fuck out of it with an avg price for the decks ending at like 15$~ And most importantly, Make them TINS. Because as we all know, YGO players go crazy for MOTHERFLIPPIN TINS.

So it even falls under the "doesn't always follow the best logical play" criteria.

I understand wanting to teach players via a simple narrative, but outside of the obvious that you need a game mat as I have seen people play these starter set like it's MTG where things just go anywhere, and actual tokens, it needed like after tutorial add on decks. something that turns this tutorial slop into an actual deck even if it's just XYZ and Synchro turbo decks with no real archetype because I will never understand a starter product that can't be taken to actual paper play games afterwards, the deck you get from a starter should at least be able to stand up to little Timmy's dark magician deck.
@dudono174426 күн бұрын
I think that just Rank 4 turbo would also be very easy to understand from a gameplay perspective. Or, if you want to include Tribute Summon, you can just make like a Rank 8 deck. I'd have at least 1 archetypal deck though.

I think if konami ever tries this again, what they should do is start with high octane gameplay that ends with both players being forced into a simplified/topdeck gamestate, that they then use this portion to show off the more simplistic core basics, all the while building them back up to another high octane rebound also, there should be 15 pages minimum, dedicated solely to the battle phase (specifically, the damage step)

Picture this: A set of 4 competent decks through the eras -- a pair of goat style decks, a pair of Edison style decks, a pair of duelist alliance era decks, and a pair of modern-ish decks. Call it the legacy gauntlet or something idk

25:37 the OCG starter decks with Live Twin, Eldlich and P.U.N.K.??? The structures from AE with actual real decks inside for a new format for new people to play??? Like its not that hard, they did it over there they can easily do it here
@TenshiTetsuII25 күн бұрын
Also, when a structure is good, it tends to be the best gateway for new people to get in The traptrix structure got my locals a huge influx of people to play the game, making a product like this doesn't work because those aren't real decks

They included the classic Ojamas but left out Ojama Black. Uh-Oh, Jerome has some explaining to do before Konami gets cancelled, or ends up backpedaling so far that they make another starter set with each deck containing 38 copies of Ojama Black, and a single copy each of Ojama Green, and Yellow (let's be real, we'd all buy it.)

To be fair, the 2Player-Starter in the EU has the far better box. Its a thicker box in 2 pieces with an extra piece of cardboard with two spaces for the decks. What he opened looked like the discount version of the box

Honestly, this set feels more like a deck for demoing purposes, but the sample duel is waay too long. I can't imagine being sat at a convention booth all day playing out this script dozens of times.

Tactical try decks with a qr code to a video would do it. This game might be required to right a number higher than "6+" due to complexity now though.

Make beginner box that includes 6 different decks (I am not duelist aliance fanboy, but sorry for bringing up many of the decsk from that timeperiod as they are just great examples for the things Im writing): 1 main centric control/stun one, that is simple and not too oppresive, while not having any ED cards, monarch, true dracos, labyrinth, some paleozoic variant should be great start, also you could go the ritual route here as well since that is also game mechanic 1 easy to understand fusion one, invoked, shaddoll (that could also double down as method of teaching the flip mechanic), hell, even some simpler HERO variant could be cool and also iconic and recognisable, just stay away from complicated fusion decks, and fusion decks that play with their fusion summons like combo pieces like Branded for example synchro one, probably the easiest one since theres plenty synchro slops that more or less do the same thing, so just stay away from ones that cheat the mechanic in some form (no swordsoul, ursarctic or anything of that sort), and same as heroes, you could choose any of the plethora of iconic anime ones, with Blackwings, Junk, and Resonators being some great cjoices. If we need the non anime choice, Speedroids, or Ice Barrier, or Dragunities could be cute (last one also teaching you about equip mechanics, so them and shaddoll could be 2 parts solved with one move) XYZ is also relatively open to choose from, Utopia is probably the biggest contender here, just stay away from decks like Zoodiac, or Springans, or anything that bends the mechanic, and also hopefully has some rank ups built in so that players get familliar with that part. as for the non anime choices, Suships could teach players about normal monsters and xyzs at the same time, aaand BA for our Farfa, coincidentally isnt bad choice as well Pendulum is a bit hard, but you can dumb it down by going for some earlier pendulum strats (metalfoes, dinomist, ignknight, or just some pendulum soup that uses simpler pendulum cards, pend summon in itself is strong enough to contend with the rest of the decks on beginner level). Also, keeping the DA theme, Qliphort could double down as pendulum and main centric deck, that isnt too complicated, but has a lot of bite. also, since we used shaddolls to teach flip and fusion; and dragunities for synchro and equip, choosing one o the vanilla pend strats can also double down to teach players about pendulum and normal monsters at the same time, or choosing enymion could teach them about counters and pends at the same time Link is also easy, just stay away from any link strat that either cheats them out (like Tri Brigade), or strats that have some extra steps like Salamangreat, but oher than that Link is pretty self explanatory and straight forward, go with code talkers, or any cyberse slop you can cook up

Given all the flaws I do really like the set deck order, it allows for the guide to give more from instructions then simple "if you drew thos type of card" that being said it definitely should not be one long book that outlines each turn and play. Have like only up to turn 3 as layed out and then put little tips and tricks (like the COH interaction) in so it's not 2 players passing a book around but instead two players learning together and getting to know yugioh. Obviously play mats, deck box, dice and actual real token cards should all be included. Heck maybe through in 4 packs from a random set so each play gets 2 to beef up and change their deck, I hope Konami dose this product again if only to show how great it can be if they do everything right

They could have given you multiple decks for different eras. Start them off with two decks setting traps and normal monsters. Next game move them to goat format. Then give them xyz and then give them something resembling a modern deck
@guidofalconi117826 күн бұрын
Considering Yugioh started as an manga I could see them doing an manga duel explaining the real life rules. That would be exciting read and learn at the same time. Also, how do you even get new players into yugioh? Like, unless you have intimate knowledge of card games you are probably going to get confused and bored. The game has gotten away from the designers, and with no rotation to slow it down and give people a clean slate once in a while, I do not see how you grow the player base.

Make a box with 6 decks in it. 2 goat format, 2 edison or hat format and 2 modern decks and a modern game board. Give the players a small booklet for each deck and have the players learn to play the game in order. yugioh is complicated but if you break it down into more digestible bits its much easier to understand.
@RunicSigils26 күн бұрын
There should be 6 but they shouldn't break it up by era, they should break it up by summoning method. There should also be effectively a 7th one that's just made up of good stuff cards, like hand traps. Normal/Tribute/Ritual Fusion, Synchro, XYZ, Pendulum, and Link being the 6. The real problem comes in designing those, however. While ideally, you probably would attach anime stuff to it, for example. I don't think that works for playing the game when you have so many different kinds of summoning types. What you really need to do is sit down and design six decks as part of essentially one strategy. So that they can also be combined into one single deck once the people understand. There really isn't an archetype that already exists where you can make one comprehensive deck that uses all of the summoning types properly in combo meaning they have to do so from scratch with the intent that they all can be used together. If you're just given a bunch of junk that you'll never use again, it doesn't encourage buying it. Unless they do that, the Speed Duel box sets were probably the closest they can get to being ideal, where they provide you a bunch of decks that work, and some extra stuff you could modify them with.
@DragoRaRaRa26 күн бұрын
@RunicSigils I disagree as the issue isn't the complexity of the summoning mechanics it's the speed of the game. But to answer your question about a deck that uses every summoning mechanic yes there is. It's a modern weevil insect deck. A modern weevil deck has fusion, syncros, xyzs and links all in it's extra deck. The only 2 things it doesn't have are rituals and pendulums, which are for the best as all good modern ritual and pendulum decks are overly complicated and I wouldnt recommend them to new players who this product would be made for. Alternatively Odd eyes has fusion, syncro, xyz, ritual and pend. And it could easily add a few links In.

I genuinely think yugioh deserves to fail at every moment just because of how poorly it treats its players, especially new ones, and I'm just so disappointed seeing it not crash and burn every year it goes by. The 2 player starter set is like an elaborate punchline to the joke that is its own playerbase trying to get new players into it.
@renaldyhaen26 күн бұрын
I like how he mentions old cards like Dark Magician and Blue-Eyes because if this product is really for new players, they'd likely know the game from the anime, like Yugi or Jaden's era. Using constructed Blue-Eyes and Dark Magician decks helps build hype among non-Yugioh players by recreating the iconic rivalry from the anime. Plus, these decks can teach most Extra Deck summoning mechanics-Ritual and Normal Monsters included-except Pendulum, which is more complex. Dark Magician doesn’t have Synchro monsters, but they could include something like Baronne de Fleur and summon it using Ash Blossom. Blue-Eyes lacks Xyz monsters, but generic Rank-8 options are already part of its playstyle. Neither deck has Links, but generic options like Imduk could work. From a new player’s perspective, though, this product is garbage. You still have to spend more money to play properly. This could’ve been avoided if the 2-player starter set included fully constructed decks. Money remains a huge barrier to entering Yugioh.
