I felt this with Infernoids and Qliphorts. There used to be an interesting edge to something like BLEW because that deck could usually crash or hit over all the towers bosses and turbo-ed noids for little cost on their end, but now a niche like BLEW had just doesn't exist anymore and decks like Qli or infernoids are under powered not in effects but in attack power. Qli literally can't even summon Access Code lol.

Link Monsters don't care about the Link mechanic. Pretty much all the meta link Monsters (Halq, Access, Appolouse, Knightmares, Borrels, etc) don't care if they are co-linked or if a Monster points them/is pointed from them. Even a lot of Link decks like Salad didn't really care so long as they still had a zone free to extend their combos.

My other issue with the knightmares is how they killed generic xyz monsters for the most part. Since its always easier to get any two guys than any two level 4s or whatever (even if your entire deck is the same level because links can use any extra deck monster as well), archetypes unless specifically built to make in archetype xyz monsters are always designed with a variety of levels on them, unlike in the past when archetypes would often have lined up levels to suit a theme. This means everyone has the exact same pool of utility cards rather than your deck's predominant level having different options. The rank 4 toolbox was the most iconic with stuff like castel and tornado dragon, but rank 3s had break sword and dire wolf as examples, rank 2s had the paleos. The only exception I can think of is combo decks that use level 8s such as blue eyes and ddd running some galaxy eyes cards but that doesnt really count.

This is an issue with YGO's extra deck mechanics in general. Each one is more generic than the last so (outside of decks specifically themed around that mechanic) there's no real reason to use the prior mechanic when a new one comes out. Why need a specific spell and two or more guys with specific names when you can just get a tuner on the field and count stars? Why mess around with tuners and do math to get your stars to add up when you can just get two same level guys on board? Why bother needing to make sure your guys have the same level when you can just slap X dudes down with a basic type condition (like two Machines or Effect monsters or whatever) and go off? I genuinely think the reason Rush Duels exists as a thing with its own anime is because Konami's usual method of making a new extra deck mechanic more generic and broken than the last can't continue, at least not without a few years break for R&D to figure something out. How do you get more broken and generic than links without just removing all restrictions from the "get dudes on board, send to GY" mechanic?
@MonteScarf
@MonteScarf Жыл бұрын
It's probably my biggest issue with Links, other than just the existence of Accesscode and shit like that. Because links are so generic, they push other summoning mechanics out - the Knightmare monsters should all be banned due to being the most guilty of this by a WIDE margin. As you said: Why make Tornado Dragon, even in a rank 4 deck, when Phoenix does the same thing but better? The only downside is if you don't have a card to discard, but the upside is that you get to discard a card - and potentially draw one as well if it's co-linked.

Hot take: the community's overall hate of omni-negates and floodgates, paired with Konami needing to print stronger and stronger cards to sell product due to no set rotation will inevitably lead to a ceiling of speed which I think Ishizu/Tear may be an indicator we are starting to reach. Being able to start setting up your board on your opponent's first turn when going second is probably the last major barrier to the maximum speed of the game, which will probably be setting up an endboard before your first turn when going second. Games can be effectively decided in 1-2 turns already and with the design space Ishizu/Tear seems to have opened up it's only a matter of time before Konami prints an archetype that effectively wins the game turn 1 regardless of going 1st or 2nd, and only an absolutely nuclear banlist or completely unreasonable floodgates activatable turn 1 will be enough to stop that

It's really simple: limit all main deck tears or ban them. Singular cards like Metamorphosis were able to define a meta and aspects of a single archetype like Drident and Broadbull were albe to do it too. Now there's an entire archetype that wholly defines the meta with a secondary unrelated archetype directly supporting it. The next step is to have one single deck that everybody uses. If I wanted to play goat format I'd play goat format. Fortunately Konami banhammered all of the goat defining cards. A nuclear ban list is needed, set rotation needs to be implemented, or formats need to be officially made that segregate away the modern broken cards from the modern lower power cards.

It might not be meta with just that but it certainly will be a strong rouge in format like tears, with consistent gy lock turn 1 and protection for necrovalley through their boss monster all with 1 card, other 4 cards in hand could be anything. Apparently they got pendulum support but those aren't actually Crystal Beast names or have the CB effect so putting them in the pendulum zones plugs up S/T zones that you then can't put actual Crystal Beasts in. Make them be able to pend summon CBs from the S/T zone. Let them be destroyed on the field, send themselves to the backrow, and when they do you can just put them into the pendulum zones to set scales if you want. Extra deck pendulum monsters can do it, why not the monsters that already turned into continuous spells three generations earlier.

Unfortunately, them being so generic allows for them to be extremely versatile. Honestly, I feel like reprinting the Knightmares (At least the banned ones) to make it so that they're archetype locked, and giving them some more main deck monsters to use would be a lot of fun (The World Legacy Lore is well made enough to where it should be possible to add in additional cards to the archetype). As long as Gumblar is still banned, it probably wouldn't be too bad. I don't know if it would be viable, but I think it'd be fun to play pure Knightmare/Knightmare + World Legacy. Note: Goblin and Mermaid 100% need their effects adjusted either way if they were reprinted tbh (Ex: Goblin is limited to an extra summon for Knightmare/Fiend Monsters, and Mermaid is limited to non-link monsters if more Knightmares were made). The generic support that they provide is just amazing for anything that could use it.

I do really wonder what Yugioh would look like in a world where the game focused more on the mind game aspect of face down cards rather that pumping out infinite special summons. Rewatching the anime right now and it's so funny to me when Yugi sees a face down and always thinks twice about attacking, it's one of the things that make them so captivating. Yugioh needs a great casual format like Magic has Commander. Something where 90% of the tier B-D stuff can actually breath a bit. Edit: Wow, I didn't think it was possible to misunderstand what I said that badly, but that's on me forgetting where I am. Gold in MD is actually a pretty good example of what I mean, not singleton or multiplayer, I was comparing it to Commander in the sense that unless you establish that you're playing cEDH, there's basically an agreement that while you're decks can be good at what they do, no one is really trying to be hyper competitive. I think less generic meta staples would help a lot in this regard personally.

No, it doesn't. It needs a proper (and supported) Pauper style format to sweep away the invincible boss monsters and other overpowered nonsense. Notably, ALL Magic formats can be played as 3+ player formats and EDH is the least suited for that style of play due to how combo heavy it is. This leads to very long and uninteractive turns. Now, where have I heard of that happening before?

Hot take from an MTG player with an interest in YGO: Archetypes should be a subtype (like toon), rather than referring to parts of a card's name. This would avoid all the translation issues and let Konami make names like SPYGAL without screwing over the cards. Example: [Monster/Effect/Aqua/Frog]

The problem would be cards that have no archetype to begin with or are part of multiple archetypes. They also did do that. Aqua was supposed to be a playstyle like how blue is in magic. The problem was that they liked narrowing it down even further and the amount became too much to consider since there's no rotation. I don't think archetypes are the problem at all since Konami can always make a name a pun and part of it. Spygal is a tcg card. Like it was made in america. They intentionally made it a SPYGAL and not SPYRAL to keep the power of the deck low. There are other cards with similar fates. There's an archetype called Lunalights with monsters that searches lunalight cards and a spell called 'Luna Light' in both regions that cannot be searched due to the space. Basically while I agree it's solid it means very little in terms of actual design.

trap cards should always have the strongest effects, like solemn judgement and torrential tribute. They are the slowest type of card, which means they should always have big payoffs. Also, you can rarely actually close a game with trap cards, most decks will still need monsters to attack with. Instead, monsters have the same effects as trap cards at no real cost(stardust dragon at least had to tribute itself to negate destruction). I think this is apart of the personality of the game moving away from the duelist and to the monster. It's less "look at this cool duelist, he has all these trap cards" like in the Duel Monsters show, people think a lot more about the archetypes of cards than the people who use them

Should tell you how much of a mistake the knightmares were that I was unironically playing Phoenix in Despia for a bit because it meant that I didn’t auto-lose to Mine or Anti-Spell, particularly in game 1. Also, disagree wholeheartedly with IshTear being a good thing. I think 3-ish deck formats are optimal provided no more than 1 are floodgate spam. But the reason I really dislike IshTear is because it bends far too many rules, to the point that any deck that wants to compete has to either bend as many rules or be built specifically to counter IshTear. Konami is going to want to keep making money, and the only ways I see them being able to do that is to either ban IshTear into submission or continue to make cards that bend more and more rules until the game eventually devolves into both of you just chucking cards at each other essentially at random because any semblance of order was overwritten by power creep. In short, IshTear is a deck that has pushed the rules to their limits, and needs to be removed for the good of the game, even if that means bidding farewell to what some consider to be a great format.

the only problem i have with ish tear is that everything it has is far too generic, the tears activate when sent to grave by basically anything, the bystials are just a mistake of an archetype in general, and it's miserable trying to activate any GY effects with the ishizu cards around and of course the fact that none of its cards lock you into anything, if the bystials were meant to be branded support why did they not make it so you were fusion locked? i can understand why people like the format, it's incredibly interactive and "has no floodgates" (ignore the easy to make abyss dweller), but when the deck has an in archetype solemn strike that isn't once per turn, can easily make baronne and has the ability to abuse the spright cards and Beatrice, all on the same endboard, that's a serious problem

Here's a take, whether it's hot or otherwise: Archetypes should be less generic. Problematic cards that belong to archetypes now (such as Toadally Awesome) should be banned, and later down the road be retrained to only serve the archetype in question. In return for archetypes being less generic, better generic support should be printed as well. It is a waste of both material and money to constantly print cards for the sole purpose of being essentially pack filler (I do not endorse the end of "gimmicky lower power cards", per say, but cards that are simply inapplicable in any sense should cease being printed)

Not really a hot take, but Link monsters are not really caring about the fact they are links. Any effect that summons a monster on a link should use the zones they point to, in fact, the arrows need to be used more in general. And link with a negate effect should tribute a monster they point to. Summon conditions should be stricter as well, requiring a monster of the same type or archetype to summon. If links were harder to splash in every deck and weren't used as generic monsters and actually leaned into their unique mechanics, the game would be SOO much better.

Many effects requires you to mill or shuffle from GY to deck as a cost. You have to be careful activating these if you don't want to go deck out. Shuffling isn't always good since there's no deck searching in this game, when a card is shuffled back to the deck, it stays in there until you hard draw it again, while if it stays in GY, some card can retrieve it back. I think the following would be an acceptable scenario: 1. Some pend cards are re-hit 2. Pendulum was historically designed such that, with a few very specific exceptions, if you actually made anything with them you needed A. to waste another card to perform the summon (fusion spells, non-pend tuners), or B. lost some or all of the pendulums used (most early pend tuners, xyz materials). That way, original card keeps being playable in traditional format and returns 90% of the time after power creep. 2) Big tournament's top 8 should be played on a simulator. Yugioh has a potential to be a spectator sport as well, but who (among new players or non players) in a right mind would watch an event where they can't clearly see the cards being played, can't read what they do, and has to endure 10 minutes of shuffling (I would rather watch Neymar rolling on a ground than shuffling) 3) Gumblar wouldn't be good this format or any of the last couple of formats 4) Ban lists should be much more liberal. What's the big deal if they release too powerful card once in a while. It's much more annoying to watch card being banned 10 years longer than it should be. More than half the list is completely unnecessary.

"Hot" take: I really like Jospeh but this format is cancer for anyone not wanting to play tear for one of the multiple valid reasons. Those being subjective ofc, but here are some I heard and partially share: too expensive, uninteresting artwork, uninteresting playstile, exhausting and frankly boring games to play and watch, often hitting time limit, supporting another level of powercreep, raising the barrier of entry, repetitiveness, playing on the opponents turn, invalidating other strategies like Dark World...

The Bystials do more to shut out decks like Dark World than any of the Tear/Ishizu cards. Even if you get your locals to run Underdog and cut Tear (this is something you can do now) you'll still have Magnamut chokeslamming your Light/Dark decks.

Hot take: Big boards can potentially be fun to interact with as long as they're not OVERLY oppressive. Picking apart a board is one of the most satisfying things in the game. The key being if they're not OVERLY oppressive; 1-2 negates are fine, 3 is manageable but pushing it, and any more than that it becomes way too overbearing. (So no, I am NOT justifying release Master Duel Drytrons with 6+ negates) By extension, another hot take: Negates aren't the problem as much as cards that negate AND act as removal. Boss monsters that negate without destroying/banishing and/or cards that destroy/banish without negating are actually pretty interactive and healthy, all things considered. Hot take #3: Stardust Dragon and Light and Darkness Dragon are the best designed boss monsters in the game's history, with Unchained Abomination being close up there. This sort of coincides with my 2nd hot take, and although Stardust negates AND destroys, you have to choose to sacrifice your Stardust for the rest of the turn to do it, which provides meaningful thought and interaction from both players (on top of Stardust only negating destruction effects, which are the most common removal effects making it extremely powerful for a long period of time, and non-destruction removal was also reasonable enough to access at the time).

Stardust is a very balanced card but my favorite boss is White Zoa of Dogmatika. It protects the archetypal cards from extra deck monster effects and can either mill to the GY the opposing extra deck/hand or send all opposing extra deck field monsters back to the extra deck. The archetype already mills the extra deck so if they have no monsters in the extra deck left they have to return their field monsters back to the extra deck. The only things unaffected are bosses immune to card effects which Zoa can beat over or trade with at 4000 attack.

Joseph being on his "the tear 0 format is fine take" is still wild to me like yeah, Tear isnt explicitly saying "you can't play the game" but it is implicitly saying it cos whilst their boards are "mid" those boards can literally be made every single turn off of 1 Tear mill and when you've got cards like Cryme, Sulliek and even Rulkallos that proc all of your Tears AND are interruptions... not to mention you've got Keldo, Mudora and the Bystials to ensure that the GY is never getting touched

Their boards aren't even mid, they're crazy You end on almost as many disruptions as full power drytron while being able to do it during both player's turns and being more consistent And on top of that tear locks decks out of their gy resources with mudora/keldo/dweller, and the shufflers came out during a format where almost every top deck was heavily reliant on the gy

This is my conspiracy theory... Konami is creating all these powerful cards to balance their entire library overall. In a near future, we will see even more banned cards coming back because Konami will conclude that in order to balance the game the only solution is to make all decks powerful enough.

Honestly, years ago, Konamis plan is to unban all the old school cards so they can come off the banlist by creating these new tear 0 formats. Something tells me if Pot of Greed gets off the list, its last Tier 0 format might involve Yugis monsters, basically Dark Magician.
@leotamer5

@@jobejacobs62 There is no power-level where Pot of Greed can come off the list, unless there is so many powerful draw spells, you have to start cutting Pot of Greed to fit your pieces of Exodia. You print "Pot of Super Greed" to draw 3 cards? Well ok, I run both it and Pot of Greed. That is to say you can't make a situation where you can unban Pot of Greed. You could make an extra deck monster you can summon for free whenever an opponent plays pot of greed to negate pot of greed and it is an omni-negate. Have the game develop into a Pot of Greed themed game of chicken.

I heard bad opinions and came a running: The fact that Goat Format majorly innovated itself during the COVID pandemic because of a massive influx of new players and what was before almost indisputable truth, that Goat Control was the best deck, became summarily proven to be wrong says a lot about how insular the community was and that it was more interested in maintaining status quo than anything else.

The thing was, Goat was a casual, good-old-days format rather than a competitive one for the most part, and people wanted to remember that era for the times when YGO was more control oriented and NSummon pass which they grew up to. the moment you go take a competitive lens to that format you realize Dagger Elma- RML FTK is a 80% winrate deck, and that shit was known since forever.
@lamiaprincess6371
@lamiaprincess6371 Жыл бұрын
@@mrbigotes9974 It's not even that though. It was well know in Goat that Royal Magical Library FTK (the actually good one) was by win rate the best deck. What I'm talking about are more recent developments, where Goat Control is now more of a Tier 2 deck and decks revolving around Chaos Sorc are much more clearly the "best" deck of the meta. It was a nostalgia format, but for a very long time Goat control being the best was defined law. There were other decks you "could" play like ReasonGate which were genuinely fun but got you shit from the community. It was so much more about keeping the persona of Goat alive.

I will leave mine here: Colossus should be unbanned in the TCG not only because of the fact that he had been terribly powercrepd but because hesonly a degenerate card in the complete board of a combo deck with 3+ negates. Just ban cupid pitch instead wich is the card that made colossus splashable in any combo deck. Thunder dragons would still not be viable with him, the archetype needs at least two new support cards to be competitively viable.

Hot Take (maybe warm take, but whatever): Erratas are bad and make the game harder for new people to come in. Yu-Gi-Oh! has a history of making dumb broken cards that should be put on the Forbidden List and never taken off. By allowing erratas, this means there are now 2 different versions of the same card with a completely different description, making it harder whenever said cards are dropped to be sure about it's effect. If you make a dumb effect because you're not thinking of how this will affect the game quite literally the moment after it drops, then own up to it and acknowledge that you fucked up. Don't make 7 versions of the exact same card because you can't keep stepping on rakes.

I think the Extradeck should be smaller making so that cards like super poly or Instant fusion actively hinders the player also making sure we don't get Pile.decks to be a thing like when we had Dogmatika Invoked Shaddol it would single handedly reduce the versatility on most decks and make so that each deck has actual Weakness that can be supplemented through the side deck but not mid game at any moment

Imagine if Halq could only be made with at least 1 Crystron mat, and/or could only summon a Crystron from deck; if Verte could only be made with at least 1 Predaplant, and/or locked you into only Predaplant fusions that turn; if Auroradon could only be made with specifically 2+ MPB materials; if Accesscode required at least 1 Codetalker material, and/or could only get the attack boost by targeting a Codetalker in grave, and/or could only banish Codetalkers to pop; if VFD required at least 1 True King material, and/or could only activate its floodgate effect by detaching specifically a True King material; etc.

Hot take/Idea: Instead of waiting 3 months for 10 YCS' to finish up before making a banlist, Konami should have a mini rotation of cards where 3 cards on the list move up for 1-2 months and then they go back to their original place(January gives us pot of greed. skyblaster and Malicious back, March they become banned/limited again and they give us shock master, maxx c and servent of endymion, etc).
