Massive big up to DJ Ron for this episode. I've been a huge Shabba D fan since high school, playing Kool FM and Telepathy tapes on a yellow Sony Sports walkman in the playground. When you're a teenager you're so impressionable so the MCs were like the voice of D&B. I don't know if some of these artists realise how much they have had an influence on the people that followed them. People talk about these "influencers" today with millions of fans on social media but how many of these people blowing up overnight on Instagram would still have such loyal fans 20/25/30 years later? When Shabba was talking about the smaller Jungle events in 96 and 97 post-Jungle these were the times when Shabba and Skibadee were bigger than pop stars to me and lots of my mates. I've been a fan since then always hunting out any interviews and this is one of the best (if not the best) I've ever seen in all that time. Thank you Ron for this series which has fast become essential viewing and thank you to Shabba for being so honest and sharing with us your story. ❤

The more i watch these London Something Podcasts i realise, we were all* (edit)just estate kids, all of us, from the punter (me and my buddies traveling down from the Northwest) to the DJ's the MC's and the promoters thats why it worked so well, a Great British Musical Genre that we all built from nothing, together. I proud to be a part of it, along with the rest of you amazing people! UK people from every background.

Shabba was a role model to so many young MCs growing up!! I've gotta admit we have a rare set of Shabba on Defection FM from 1992 over Hardcore. He's been there from day dot and is a pioneer of the scene and the craft of MCing. I love these stories. I love how Shabba symbolises the multicultural melting pot of London and shared culture of our music.

Always rated Shabba as the undisputed number 1 MC in Jungle/D&B and was lucky enough to be raving at One Nation’s, Jungle Fever’s, Telepathy etc during his peak years from ‘97-2000 - bumped into him a few times out and about and he’s always been humble and a nice guy. Massive respect to him - he was a huge influence on me and my mates in our teens and early 20’s and have many hazy memories of listening to rave tapes and Kool FM blazing weed. 43 now and still listen to Shabba’s older sets to this day. True UK legend 🇬🇧

I’m an OG Raver from Los Angeles and it was Dj R.A.W who dropped Jungle in LA, then came Dj CRS? then we heard UK jungle and we were blown away again. I still listen to old school OG Jungle when I drive to work now at 54yrs old. We were LA house party then club then rave promoters. Whata life. Would not change a thing. BIG UP SHABBA AND RIP SKIBBA Born in the 70’s Raised in the 80’s Raved in the 90’s In Los Angeles 🙌🏼

Absolutely fascinating. I was listening to the jungle from 94, raved from 1999-2003, Shabba was a superstar then in the scene, and just came across a joker with no substance when he met the ravers.. so I was expecting this interview to be a drag. The real hero of this story is Momma Shabba, single mum holding down 3 jobs to give her kids the best, Disney Land, Florida, Sunshine resorts in Jamaica, bruv this was unheard of for yute from Hackney back then!

Been a fan of shabba since i was 14, didn't even know he was white till i was 16 17 😂 definitely a VIP in the scene. Influencers back in the day had a deeper impact on ppl because we understood the struggle to be heard, plus radio was a risky business and knowing that made it more interesting, more entertaining and it gave ppl from the hood somen positive relatable vibes and energy which we all needed as youngsters. Life wouldve been so sh*t without the underground music at that time. Radio was Our KZbin, it was a different era. We saw these guys as the ghetto super stars! First interview where Ron struggled to get a question in! 😂 Shabba can chat! I found it interesting that Shabba didn't really talk about that 98-00 period with the big promotions. What I would consider his peak with Skibba etc and he must have been booked like 5/6 times every week. Only reference was the dark era, but I guess that was really post 2001. I just wonder if that period was as memorable for him as it was for us? Or was it a bad time personally that isn't remembered fondly? Anyway. Another great interview. Keep them coming for the history books.
@JL-nk1pc
@JL-nk1pc Жыл бұрын
The dark era was 98 times. Compare it to 94 sets there was a big shift in that sound. The foundation of jungle was amen editing they moved away from that. The sound was much more techy and dark.

@@marcp3788 yep I started raving after hyper d died. The drugs changed around that time think that was reflected in the raves. The pills were shit ravers moved to coke and crack. The girls moved over to garage was a bit of a sausage fest.

But I associate that 97-99 period primarily with a lot of full cycle, shy fx, jazzy influence still from tunes people like Peshay etc etc. Not saying there wasn't darker stuff, but the biggest djs that Shabba was working with, but in general it was still dancefloor/bouncy stuff.

*edit* last 20 mins is inspired. Not watched the whole thing yet, but it's funny how all these performers say the 97-98 change in music meant they lost their way a bit. That era was what got me and my mates into it. The seminal tapes we had from One Nation etc are all 97-98-99. Probably my favourite tape of all time is Swan-e and Shabba from 98. I felt the scene evolved into something more exciting then, rather than changed for the worse. Mad how we interpret it all so differently depending on perspective
@stephentrott
@stephentrott Жыл бұрын
See this was what I was interested in too. What we would consider the peak of those MCs and the music. I do wonder if really that dark switch came slightly after that period cos really that time was still all big tunes from the main camps like Dilli, V recordings, Bad Company, Ed rush etc. But no other reference to all those massive raves and epic tape packs.
@Coxwaan
@Coxwaan Жыл бұрын
@@stephentrott I guess it depends on personal taste. For me the industrial sounds of BC, Ed rush, Ram etc of the era is my favourite. Personally because that represented the era I fully discovered the music. But if these guys weren't really feeling the vibe of say 1998-2002 they done a good job of hiding it. Pure Science, One Nation, Heat etc. They were electric times
@stephentrott
@stephentrott Жыл бұрын
@@Coxwaan my sentiment exactly. No way IMO he wouldn't acknowledge that period as the peak - it was too obviously good. I just think perhaps they were trying to talk about the less obvious stuff and I suspect, like me, Shabs is no the best with dates and memory! Those raves you mention were legendary though. Was fortunate enough to experience them all too.
@JL-nk1pc
@JL-nk1pc Жыл бұрын
Which swan e tape is that? For me the music wasn't as good in that era cos they moved away from the amen break which is what I loved. Still a great era though and probably the best for MCs overall. Although hyper d in the jungle era was my fav.
@JL-nk1pc
@JL-nk1pc Жыл бұрын
@@stephentrott it didn't the dark period was 97-99. It was the peak for MCs but preferred jungle amens few years before that. Techy two steppy sound wasn't as interesting for me even though there were loads of great tunes in that period.

Was a different perspective to what I expected. Wasn't really aware of the band thing. Thought he just broke through around 94 telepathy then just kept progressing through to 2000's. Mad he considered quitting 1997 that's around the time he blew up. Seems he always wanted to be more than a jungle dnb MC but it never quite took off. For me shabba was at his best in that dark 97-99 era.

Oi DJ Ron, i LOVE these interviews my Bruddah❣️ I've watched four now. Kenny Ken Brockie Mickey Finn Shabba D (Gonna continue the rest) For me the overall vibe i receive is....Mad Honesty from all of them and that Health, Happiness & Harmony are the most valuable components of our lives🙏💛 May everyone's Souls be fully enriched. Oh and thanks for all them BOOM nights in London clubs etc.... Grateful for mine💯❣️ Lastly @ 1:30:33 - he is bang-on. Staying stagnant is not for us. We are filled with water and stagnant bodies of water, such as puddles do not contain the same energy as running bodies of water like waterfalls, streams, rivers, and oceans.
