And I quote from the proceedings "As part of a settlement in a civil lawsuit brought on behalf of the Ethiopian Airlines crash victims, Boeing in 2021 declared that it alone was liable for the ET302 accident and that neither the pilots nor the airline were at fault.

Hi Emanuel, yes I would like to hear more about the two crashes myself. I just recently in the past couple of months watched the documentaries on both the Max and the 787, and am not feeling real good about Boeing right now. Those ten 787 factory employees who said under cover that they wouldn’t fly on the planes they build was really disturbing, and now finding out about those Max rear pressure bulkhead ‘snowman’ drill hole errors just has me plain spooked to even fly on one of these things. 😳

I saw this question asked in Quora. Boeing "fixed" this mess by linking the MCAS to both AOA sensors instead of only one + provoding proper training to pilots.
@vedymin1

@@MrFerparedes Does the max have some sort of third synthetic aoa "sensor" to give additional redundancy if one of physical ones fails and there is no way to determine which ? To me there should be three aoa sensors, if one fails or indicates incorrectly, you still have two others to resolve the uncertainity.

I have heard a lot of different experts explain MCAS, but it is always interesting to me to get the point of view on something like this from an actual line pilot.

Hi Emi, thank you for the video, and please! Please make the videos over the accidents. Since the accidents happened I wondered what happened, as you mentioned, the uncommanded rudder action would trigger the runaway rudder memory items to be executed, which should have been enough to regain control of the plane.
@tomstravels520
@tomstravels520 Жыл бұрын
One other key point is the runway stabiliser training the pilots supposedly got taught was one continuous movement of the stabiliser, where as MCAS activates in short bursts then stops. So there is a possibility the pilots didn't see the trim wheel moving or hear int du to the stick shaker and other alerts going off or didn't identify it as similar to runaway trim because that was not what they were taught to look for

What is interesting is that the MCAS was borrowed from KC-46A (B767 tanker). In case of KC-46A it was needed because the weight and balance of the tanker shifts as it redistributes and offloads fuel.

My question is why have a design that requires MCAS? My understanding is that was a fix after fitting different engines into the body. Complexity should not be allowed to fix the design issues as that is a large source of risk. Your opinion is appreciated. Thx.
@CarsonUitermarkt
@CarsonUitermarkt Жыл бұрын
Moving the new engines ahead of the wing was necessary to be able to put them on at all as their efficiency gains over the traditional CFM56s were mainly as a result of their increased size. The other option would be to use a traditional partial-underwing mounting, but that would have required an expensive landing gear redesign to get the entire aircraft higher off the ground to fit the new engines. In any case, moving the engines ahead and introducing the MCAS system was necessary to prevent undue expenses (either from pilot retraining or aircraft redesign) and Boeing did as they should have done in the situation. It was not a design issue.

Thanks! To be fair, I don't quite agree with the content of the netflix documentary, I think it's too one-sided. If you read for example the content of the emergency airworthy directive the FAA issued after the first crash you'll quickly see that the crew of the second crash ignored it completly. Hard to blame the crash exclusively on MCAS if the crew didn't follow the procedures emphasized by the emergency AD. Surely MCAS played a major role, but both planes were basically out of control already before MCAS even struck and delivered the final blow.

7:16 “It was reasonable to assume this” Well, 2 fatal crashes with over 300 deaths and one fatal crash is expected every 2 years going forward… pretty obvious that it was NOT reasonable for Boeing to make the assumption don’t you think?
@A330Driver
@A330Driver Жыл бұрын
Indeed no, I still don't think so. Especially with the second flight, which had the Emergency AD at hand and still reversed the actions from the EAD which ultimately led to the crash. I'm fully with the NTSB when they said additional human factors investigation should have been done.
@tonamg53
@tonamg53 Жыл бұрын
@@A330Driver and then what? Are we going to start training pilots to become more familiar with the plane that will occasionally try to nose-dive you out of existence? I don’t think its reasonable to expect any pilots to be able to troubleshoot unreliable airspeed problem while at the same time fighting the plane from nose diving. Also the margin for error would be extremely tight.. miss something for 1-2 seconds and the plane might already be in a state where it is impossible to recover. So I really don’t see the point with additional investigation into human factors as in my view, the factors are beyond what you can reasonably expect from any human..

I'd be particularly interested to understand the differences in MCAS operation before and after grounding. I gather the changes are significant. Also I had read the stab trim cuttouts on Max are (or were) functionally different from NG and earlier. Difference being they used to allow pilots to block automatics but retain thumb switch elec trim. But with Max they cut ALL elec trim access for both automation and pilots. At least at the time of grounding. Very interested to hear your take.
@chris22capt
@chris22capt Жыл бұрын
It still is the same. Until NG, those two switches were cutout for elec trim and autopilot trim. In MAX, those two function combined into one cutout switch, but it has 2 set now, primary and backup. So those two switches function changed, one to cutout the primary system, the other one to cutout backup. It's not changed back to the old way after the grounding.

Today we will talk about A. Before we talk about A we need to know B and that may encounter C which is D but with some K. Here things may become interesting as A is concerned. So what is A then? 😊 your amazing knowledge is awesome but consider a direct approach when that can be applied. You remain to be one of the distinguished figures in aviation.

I've never understood why to turn off MCAS the motorized stabilizer trim has to be turned off completely, forcing pilots to move the stabilizer by muscle power alone. They cannot even use their own manual switches. *Every input* to the stabilizer trim motor should have a separate switch. One problem with a system should not require the entire system be shut down.
@vedymin1
@vedymin1 Жыл бұрын
Would be cool for you to demonstrate the trim runaway failure (idk if its even an available fail in pmdg ) along with the manual sinusoidal retrim to alleviate the trim wheel forces...it prolly won't work super well in the sim but still :)
@A330Driver
@A330Driver Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately it is not available in PMDG and even if it was the whole challenge of flying with the runaway stabiliser is the force needed to fly the plane - which vanishes due to the lack of force feedback.

GPS/GLONASS fault. If you can't calculate the ground speed, you can't calculate the airspeed. Or else the system is calibrated for air pressure at sea level as opposed to altitude above ground. Avionics are generally universal and not specifically calibrated to any given type of aircraft

Emmanuel, I would rather see you doing some nice live flights again, like how you started this channel. With you giving additional comment for everybody to learn about flying. All these accidents perhaps are interesting for some people. But I enjoy professional exectued flights on beautiful routes by you as a real pilot more then all these accidents. So if you find time somewhere next to your real job, perhaps you can do another live flight soon with a plane you like. I like the 737, but all other planes are fine for me too. Nontheless thanks for all your content, I learned a lot in the past period from you about flying. Greetings Boudewijn

For the sake of fairness "More to the probable cause than just MCAS The NTSB and BEA’s comments both focus on the additional contribution the crew’s actions had on the accident, areas on which the EAIB spends little to no time in the final report. The NTSB comments propose two additional factors be added to the probable cause: the operator’s failure to ensure that its flight crews were prepared to properly respond to uncommanded stabilizer trim movement in the manner outlined in Boeing’s flight crew operating manual (FCOM) bulletin and the FAA’s emergency airworthiness directive (AD) (both issued 4 months before the accident) and the airplane’s impact with a foreign object, which damaged the AOA sensor and caused the erroneous AOA"

I'm not sure why you made this video ? As far as I know it has no function in MSFS ? The whole subject/issue is ugly and brought a whole host of uncomfortable questions to the authorities/companies involved. There are lots of official reports, opinions and the relevant information is publicly available. However, you are entitled to post any video you so wish and express your opinions. I always try to look at positives in any negative situation. At least the 737MAX is now probably the most tested and and thoroughly certified aircraft in the sky right now just it shouldn't have come about due to two crashes. Thx for your videos as always.
