Haha! I was listening to this with my 11 week old puppy sleeping next to me- when she heard you said "Sit, sit..." she just popped up into a "sit position!" Guess she wasn't as asleep as I thought!

This is really great to see: a new dog owner learning how to train! Videos online make it look so easy, I’m glad to see that learning how to train takes time too! Thanks for sharing

We got our new mini dachshund at 8 weeks old. The first day she was here she learned to use the doggy stairs. The second day I taught her to sit. Two days later she followed the other dogs through the dog door. Ive recently taught her to twirl and down and now she’s practicing ‘stay’. Puppies are so easy to train! She’s also A++ at coming when I call her.

Thank you! Our ccpdt training class says we shouldn't have our dogs wearing harnesses because it encourages pulling. I only use the collar in class but on my own i usually use a harness and our pup pulls sometimes but she's only 4 months old, she's still learning everything.

Question. I’m in Florida and just reached out to a trainer to get me started training with my Kooikerhondje puppy. The first words out of her mouth were that she uses a E collar. I have grave reservations on using any E collar on a puppy and would like your thoughts on this practice. I’m just trying to get my little girl doing basic obedience. I don’t want to mess this puppy up for life.

jesus christ. don't! listen to your instincts. i'm not a trainer but if i learnt anything from any trainer who uses positive reinforcement is that reward-based training always trumps fear/punishment based training. I know from anecdotes that a lot of trainers who train with these e-collars SWEAR that they don't hurt the dog, "it's just a reminder", "it's just to get her attention". my answer to this is that if you can't teach the dog without force to GLADLY listen to you then you don't deserve its attention anyway. i've been teaching my 4mo puppy with the McCann techniques (and in general, positive reinforcement), and we are pretty much on schedule on how well she responds to her name and our calling. we set her up for success so if she doesn't respond in a situation, we won't test her again, and go back to one level lower, so that she never learns that she doesn't have to listen to us. in 3 weeks, we got from 0 (not even knowing her name) to coming back to us even when there is a little commotion with other dogs.

So excited for you! Biggest puppy tip is: if you can’t have your eyes on him, into the crate. This is a tall order but any mistake or bad behavior you can prevent is priceless. So much more time and effort to train out unwanted behavior. What kind of dog?

My puppy is the same, he nips at my hands and then after when I don't have treats he still nips
@longwildernesswalks
@longwildernesswalks Жыл бұрын
Don't reward for a nip. Say out loud at the moment he nips 'OUCH!', then remove the treat. Wait for him to re-engauge with you by holding the food just out of reach. Eventually he will sit and ponder why he isn't getting the food. As soon as he sits, mark with YES and reward. Puppies are bad about nipping, but removing the food removed at that moment makes him/her think 'what can I do to earn the food'. It just takes time.
@RLCinGA
@RLCinGA Жыл бұрын
@@longwildernesswalks Thanks for the input. Yes, this is what I "discovered" works with her. At first I lured her into a sit, even with the nip, but then I pulled my hand up higher, and she looked at it. Out of reach, and not nipping or jumping, I quickly said, "YES" and gave her the treat. It took a few times before she got it, but now she's really good about sitting, with the lure, without nipping. WIN!

maybe puppy is overfed, or you are trying to train right after a meal? I exercise my puppy, then do training, right before her meal, so just part of her kibble is still super-motivating!
@Rubdeuce2
@Rubdeuce2 Жыл бұрын
Try using its own puppy food before you feed it . Grab a couple bits and have follow your hand without giving any until youre ready to start whatever it is youre gonna be teaching i found it to be very useful in our training as my puppy is very food motivated . Ofcourse that also depends if your dogs attention is drawn towards food or perhaps can be a squeaky/noisy toy maybe a shoe/sandal rope dogs also love to tug and shake you should try looking into different stuff maybe you just havent found what drives your puppy to show you his true personality . Dogs are amazing i love my dachshund very much hes quite the little guy . Give it lots of love and care and they’ll show you loyalty and great affection in return . Because youre not only owner youre the pack leader
