I cannot emphasize the benefits of early “touch” training enough!! From the moment I brought my two ten-week old pups home, I touched them everywhere. Everywhere! They’re shih tzu and very quick and intelligent, very quick learners. I wanted to make sure they would be calm and relaxed at the vet’s office and at the groomer’s. When we finally got to the first grooming session, my groomer said she hadn’t encountered such cooperative PUPPIES in a LONG time. And she sees a TON of dogs on a VERY frequent basis. She said they were actually better behaved than many adult dogs she groomed and she had zero problems in cutting their hair or bathing or anything. Even trimming their nails. The best part? My pups are comfortable with both nail clippers AND nail grinders. I also trained my pups to allow me to take things out of their mouths.

It is fun. It’s a lot of work at first getting then used to new people, new home, new everything but once they’ve settled in they’re much easier. Just make sure they get enough exercise. A game of fetch is great. Tug of war is too but my pup Eva is very into it and she doesn’t like letting go so I don’t play anymore.

She is working with a calm natured puppy. Most people are watching this because their pup is nothing like the dog she uses. The people watch have strong willed reactive puppies who throw a tantrum when corrected. This will be why there are thumbs down. I want to see her work with a strong willed dog.

@@miehai444 We started at 6 weeks, the pup will be comforted by a security item, we used a squeeky toy. Also position the crate where the pup can see you. We make sure the pup is tired from a training session, exercises, is fed, pottied and has had a drink of water. Also we put in a chew bone if we want her to be in there awhile. Don't leave the dog unsupervised for the first few days in the crate, and keep it short the first few times, stretching it out gradually. Ignore whines, but if it gets too loud or insisting then a quick correction is called for, by a 'Hssst!' sound, or a firm 'no.' Reward with treats for a cessation of the whines for the first few times, with a 'yes!' to point out the desired behavior, and gradually replace the treats with verbal praise. Patience is key. Good luck!

These puppies already look like they’ve been trained. I’d like to see a normal wild hyper puppy be trained. That would be VERY helpful. (This Australian shepherd puppy looks like it’s about to fall asleep. Our puppy rarely sleeps and is hyper almost constantly and that’s with 1 -2 hour long walks a day!!)

You shouldn’t be taking your puppy out for that long of walks. A good rule of thumb is 5 minutes for every month they are. And they shouldn’t be awake for more then an hour at a time. Most of time they should sleeping. Trying to tire them out produces the opposite affect their brain releases seratonin to help them cope with being up and active more and you end up with a over active hyper puppy that won’t fall asleep. Would try cutting down your walks and play time. And keeping him in a crate for at least 1-2 hours at a time

I agree. My pup is way more excited and biting like crazy. She’s also younger than any of the pups I’ve seen in these videos. She’s about 12 weeks old. A small collar won’t even fit her snuggly yet. Would have gotten xsmall but they are made very thin. Oh well, we’re working on it. She’s a biting machine right now. 😮

Our pup (Chessie) is 9 months now. We followed this method after watching this video. It took a few months and persistence but it has finally paid off. Just like raising kids, consistency is key. If you aren’t consistent you are sending mixed messages…they can’t rise to your expectations if they don’t know what that expectation is.

That reaction to the collar grab was unbelievably calm, my dog would whip around and bite and if I did what she did he would go crazy because he is strong willed and fights my correction rather than submits. The majority of people are here because they have a strong willed dog who fights back. So they need to demonstrate with a dog like this.

Great video. I learned that you have to also praise and reward puppy while handling the collar to not be associated with punishment. Your previous puppy biting video has helped me and my girlfriend so much with our 12 week sheltie. I let him nip while playing with me only on my terms and he's starting to learn that he has to stop it when I tell him to. All thanks to your collar handling and "puppy raising" advice. It's worked way better than only by rewarding good behaviour.

I have a 2 year old Pug and his little neice, age 12 weeks. I had a trainer come in before I knew his little niece would be arriving home in early November-and she's a little honey! Being a flat faced breed, I avoided using any kind of collar restraint, and my boy was demanding, barking and not consistently hearing me or my husband. He is good walking on a leash and at the dog park with a wooded grassy area above a ravine for walking. He does walk well off leash and those walks with him are my favorite thing to do with him. She showed me how to teach him to settle using a gentle downward pull/ pressure with an attached line on his collar towards the floor. There is no pressure on his trachea at all. This is what I am doing with Emma Rose for training. Thank you for the video! I hope to have both of my beloved Pugs well mannered and well trained.

Also: could you address the different needs regarding handling bracephalic breeds because of the tendency of BOAS? Most knowlegable owners use a harness as I did but have difficulty with some training issues because of that. having used multiple different harnesses, It has taken me forever to get my boy to stop pulling-probably why I enjoy those off leash walks!

I'm currently dealing with this exact issue, particularly zoomie hour. My pupper (5 month old Rotti girl) recently had (maybe still has, it was the last day of her anti biotics today) a bladder infection, and the weather's been bad (cold and damp), so I couldn't take her outside to play and walk her as much as I'd have liked to. And because she's still a bit wild and clumsy, I couldn't play that much with her indoors either. So it got especially bad, usually right after waking up from a nap. She'd be so well behaved most of the day, during the walks, and then she'd go into insane doggo mode, zooming around going for curtains, table and chair legs, etc. and nipping at peoples' hands, legs, feet, etc. I've got her to calm down a bit over the last day, but this video should help a lot.

Your pup is sensitive to a collar grab so use a leash instead, meaning keep one on him and then pick it up, and lead to go on walk or time out. If he isn’t too wild, then play or exercise him (if he’s under stimulated) or time out (if he’s over stimulated).

Thank you so much for such an amazing video. I have a 3 month old chocolate Labrador whose biting has been hard to control to the point where we have had to keep him outside the house. My renewed dog training based on what was shown in this video starts tonight! Key takeaways - leash on the puppy at all times was a revelation! Lots of small treats as rewards is also a revelation. I have been avoiding treats because labs tend to get overweight quickly. Avoiding sitting down at eye level with the puppy during play time was also an interesting point as was the witching hour thing. Didn’t realise it was a thing

My boxer puppy is 11 weeks and he gets crazy and tries nippy and barking when he wants my attention. I do take hold of his collar but he doesn’t readily settle. I think I’m doing the right thing but just need to continue to consistently train handling his collar and all the simple training techniques to develop the relationship.

Hi Patricia. My Boxer mix puppy is 12 weeks old and also has a ton of energy that she's not always sure how to express. I have found that she does need correction in order to respect me, but she also needs specific praise to learn what I do want. I watch for behaviors that I like and praise her for them. Like when she wants to be frisky but finally lays down I say, "Good down! I like down! Good girl!" She looks at me like, "Oh, that's what you want! Ok, I can do that again." I also taught mine to "Whisper" instead of bark. I waited until I heard a tiny, soft bark and I whispered, "Good whisper. I like whisper." And I say loudly, "Ah, Ah!" When she barks. Then I whisper, "We have to whisper." She mimicks my soft tone and I praise her in a whisper. It's completely adorable and allows for more fun interaction than being barked at. Hello and thank you for this video! 2 questions: 1)for the leash/line that is attached to the dog throughout the day, what if the puppy keeps chewing at it? Is it okay to allow for that behavior? Mine too even at 8 months. I don't keep line on in his pen for safety reasons but yes, if he keeps chewing it, it defeats the purpose. Maybe a shorter one? I keep harness on when not in pen for the handle in the back to grab him. He just loves wood...no nylabone or benebone can come close to the taste/texture of my woodwork or drawers. ; ) I did find bully sticks helpful and kongs etc but wish it wasn't just food. He really doesn't like a lot of the rubber toys alone.

My puppy of Maremma shepherd has been soooo difficult to train in terms of biting, she always tries to chew on my clothes, socks, hands, EVERYTHING. Tomorrow I'll have a day off, so it's gonna be the perfect occasion to try this training! Hope this one will work for my little baby dog :)

How is she doing now? I also have a Maremma -Austraian Shepard, 11 weeks. And she chews like you mentioned but also when over stimulated bites at any part of me she can get hands,arms, feet,legs knees... she will sit when I command it but only if she sees food in 1 of my hands.

@@karenmacdonald1359 hi! My puppy is doing really well now, she doesn’t bite as much as before, if I call her out about her behaviour she stops biting immediately. Obviously sometimes when overstimulated during playing sessions she tends to nibble a bit, not in any harmful way, she just suck my fingers. I think that growing helped her to be more calm, but till 3 months ago she kept on being quite “aggressive”. What helped her the most was my punishments as scolding her a bit like saying “no” or instantly stopping her behaviour by making her sit. Hope my comment was helpful!

The "hand in the collar" part, I always assume that puppers love to be gently scratched or massaged under the collar, it does create an itchy spot and many times the puppers are leaning into it, that's how you know they like it so I'm always giving them some love around the collar. I thought your correction was very nicely done, and I would also do that as well if needed.

How do I train my new American Shepherd who is 8 weeks old and has zero interest in treats? I've tried 3 different small, soft treats but he won't do anything more than take them a few feet away, drop them, then come back. I've been using petting and getting excited and tell him he's a good boy as a replacement for treats. I want do the training of getting him used to getting grabbed by my toddler's. I love your approach-it makes sense! I have a teacup Pomeranian who is 13 weeks old and she does a lot of nipping so the timing of this video is perfect! The biggest problem I’m having is she hates the collar and keeps chewing on it and gets her lower jaw under the collar. She is so small and it’s hard to find a collar small enough where she can’t get her jaw underneath. Any suggestions?

Hi, thank you for the video. What do you do when the puppy starts biting on the short leash that's dragging after her? My doberman is 8 weeks old. She also nips and bites a bit at my 5 year old daughter when she's wearing dresses. It's not too bad as we are constantly looking to correct her behaviour and I'm with her all day, but I want her to be a high-level k9 that doesn't hesitate on commands. She sleeps in a closed crate without whining, but if she's not sleeping yet and sees me walk away the separation anxiety kicks in. I pick her up to take her down the stairs to my walk-out basement to get to the backyard (waiting to vaccinate her before I take her out), and because she is scared of the stairs (going down) she gets reluctant for to all the way to me for me to pick her up. I noticed it transitioned to even when not at the stairs she has moment when she'll resist, even though I'm working on re-call all the time and got her to drop the leaf and run to me yesterday. That was nice to see. Overall, she's amazing. Getting up ever 1.5 hours at the moment for her not to have accidents at night, and watching her patterns throughout the day. Hope to get your opinion!

What type of collar are you using in this video and could you describe the way you are correcting the dog a little more? Grabbing the leash as close to the collar as possible and then pulling it to the side? Thanks so much for this wonderful advice.

I'm sorry what I saw was a puppy who was already pretty well trained. He wasn't that wild. He didn't if a couple times. But he responded so quickly to her that you could see it already been trained. I did get some tips on what to do when they nip, like the collar grab, also being above them, and also keeping them on a leash in the house more. I have a Blue Heeler pup that does bite quite a bit. After 2 months. He still bites but not as hard and now we're he's breaking the skin anymore LOL. But I don't keep them on a leash the house and I'll try that.
