I’ve loved “Back to the Egg” since the day it was released, and feel it has aged extremely well. I remember being in awe when Superstation TBS aired an ‘Egg’ special that included all of the promo films from the album. Tudor, thanks for showing us the important sites that have to do with the LP and/or videos! Your passion and knowledge of the album and geographic region combine to make this a wonderful “travelegg”!

I always thought this album was underrated. Rolling Stone magazine usually shredded Paul McCartney's output , particularly in the 1970's , as a favor to John Lennon. But Paul's voice was rocking on this album. The band was tight and very talented. Had this Back to the Egg album been a first album by a new artist back in 1979 it probably would have been more accepted and critically acclaimed. Paul wrote so many great songs by 1979 that he was forced to compete with his Beatle self and his Wings output. That in itself is amazing. Then when you think that Paul would go on to write , produce , and perform new material in the studio and live onstage for the next 42 years after the release of this Back to the Egg album??? My God that's incredible to me. If Paul somehow found a way to live for the next 1,000 years at the age of 30 or 40 for that whole span of time I'm convinced he could produce hits in every decade of that entire 1,000 year span!!!! And I'm not joking! Sir Paul McCartney is a living breathing musical instrument. Even when he talks its almost in a rythm and when he speaks sentences the words come out of his mouth in melodic tones! 😆 ok maybe I'm looking to close but I swear it's happening! 😆

My 2nd fave Wings album - after Band on the Run. I think it's a far better album than Wings at the Speed of Sound, Venus and Mars, London Town and definitely better than Wings Wildlife. It's better than side 2 of Red Rose Speedway. Do we count RAM as a Wings album or a McCartney album? I'd put RAM on the same level as Back to the Egg, although totally different. I actually like the fact that Back to the Egg is a collection of so many different styles.

Great observations! I remember buying Back to the Egg.. I think it was June 8 1979 or so .. I carried it home and stopped at the market and the cashier asked me what it was. I played it a lot and thought it was a great effort from Macca but clearly COLUMBIA records was looking for Springsteen or Billy Joel level numbers. You make good points.. I think Denny Laine had got ensconced in the lifestyle of Wings, the complexities of marriage and being a successful music professional in the London of the day prevented him from really CLAWING BACK or RECLAIMING HIS TIME as a musical artist during that time and having the single mindedness to focus laser like on his solo projects while also being a gregarious, fun loving, easy going sort who could have existed in the idiosyncratic world of post Beatles McCartney. His old mates in the Moody Blues were going through much the same problems as they sought to reunify and record the Octave album in California of all places with Mike Pinder pulling the whole band out of their comfort in England into some unforeseen difficulties in California which caused great dissension in the band leading to Pinder's firing. Denny Laine seemed to not make those kind of waves and seemed a highly social easygoing guy but I'm sure he might have spent the 70s differently in retrospect if he'd known how all would turn out.. just as I think George Harrison might have spent the year 1967 more focused on his music and instruments vs the distractions & sturm und drang of just BEING a Beatle. Meanwhile part of me wonders if McCartney should have seriously considered re-establishing the Paul McCartney solo identity, to focus on his songwriting and a more focused set of statements, as part of his post Wings Over America / Columbia signing next phase.. perhaps using The Fireman to front more experimental work like McCartney II and Wings to transition from 70s era stadium rock to the punk/new wave/modern rock of the 80s. The trifurcation of identities might have made his eclecticism more productive.

Paul has always had a knack for melody and music composition. I’m pretty sure the notes flow through the air and Paul plucks out the ones he needs at any given time. Nice video. Subscribed. And thank you for giving me the correct pronunciation of Lympne, after all these years. I was 16 when BTTE came out and I LOVED it at the time, I think mainly because I was happy to hear Paul rock after the mellow London Town. I was stunned by the negative reviews and lack of airplay at the time. While I still love the album, I'd now have to rank it as my second least favorite Wings album (LT is least favorite), but there's no Wings album that I don't like, I think they are all great in their own aspects. I think my issue with this one is that I find it to be a case of the parts being greater than the sum. I mostly love the individual tracks, but the album just doesn't seem to flow well for my listening. And it is not The Broadcast that upsets the flow for me. I'm with Bowie, I think The Broadcast is unique and enjoyable and it has grown on me as I get older. It's the Rockestra that drags the album down a bit for me. Kind of boring, IMHO. I would expect, with such an assemblage of talent in one place, that material for Rockestra should have been a bit more dynamic. Granted, Rockestra Theme was award winning, but I can't for the life of me understand why. I've heard better soundchecks. I'd much rather he left Cage on the album, instead. Anyway, thanks for this insightful on location review. I'll be checking out your other videos soon.

Hi James. Thanks for subscribing 👍 I loved reading your insight so thanks for sharing. Rockestra - you've heard soundchecks. Hee Hee so true. Great video on a great album. By the way, After the Ball/Million Miles was joined together, not really a medley but they do flow from one to the other effectively. I just would like to add I adore 'Baby's Request'. A classic maybe 70 years after it's time but a classic nevertheless to later reappear on Kisses on the Bottom. Wix, Robbie McIntosh, Chris Whitten, Hamish Stuart all played with Linda beginning with the album Flowers in the Dirt in '89. Linda played on all albums up to Run Devil Run. So she was on Unplugged, Off the Ground, Flaming Pie. Of course she was on every album prior to his new band in '89. Fun fact: The '89 group was never given a group name but fans used to call them Lumpy Trousers. London Town was a woeful video although quite a nice song.

Thanks Matt. What I like about Back To The Egg is that you get 5 interesting band members to watch. It’s not just the Paul McCartney show. I think that why Speed of Sound and Venus & Mars work for me too…because all band members on those two albums got to sing too (even Linda) and this makes a proper band for me, not just a front man with some backing band members. That’s just me though 😄

@@TudorSmith a theory about his albums I have is that it can depend at what time in your life you hear them. Not just your age but the time and memories associated etc. I just missed this the first time around, & by the time I came back around to it I’d heard all the great stuff. I like 3 maybe songs, but I don’t find it has the quality. As you rightly say it’s all very subjective! Glad you made it to Camber Sands. Whatever next?? The farm on Mull and the beach where they did the video sounds great. Don’t think he goes there anymore.
@TudorSmith

I think you're dead right. And especially if the memories were not positive, then on relistening, the association is not a good one. Perhaps, what with Wings splitting up, and the failed tour, this is why McCartney himself doesn't rate the album?
@mattgaskell945

@@TudorSmith I think so. With BTTE being a relative flop and criticised, Linda wanting more family time, and then the Japan bust, it was game over for Wings. I think it became a hassle for him, and when you’re Paul McCartney you don’t need to live with hassle. Wings never had the edge or sophistication of The Beatles, but I think they were better than McCartney was made to believe. I’d love him to play more of their stuff live.
@TudorSmith
@TudorSmith 2 жыл бұрын
Indeed. And those live videos I’ve seen, there are relatively few Wings songs in the set - which is odd when you consider how successful the Wings Over America tour was. We always see Live And Let Die being performed though, probably because they can employ pyrotechnics 💥

@TudorSmith
@TudorSmith 2 жыл бұрын
I was wondering about RAM myself. Other than the fact that Linda has some involvement, RAM could have been McCartney II eh? Not Wings album can top Speed of Sound for me but that’s because my young teenage impressionable ears heard that first 👍

This is the first , and only, NEW Wings Lp I bought. Mainly because it was their last LP. I had purchased all the rest of their catalog well after their release date ;) I thought it was great then and still do now. The "Stone" usually wasn't friendly to Macca after the break up were they?

The Rolling Stone magazine was pro-Lennon I think. I’d have thought a music magazine would want to remain unbiased but there you go. I also think Back To The Egg was a winner. And the band line-up was so good with Laurence Juber and Steve Holly bringing a fresh spin on the bands sound.

Paul had a great band line-up, sadly that 1980 was the end of Wings! I think the album cover photo, is the best including all of Wings, and Paul's solo album's.
@TudorSmith
@TudorSmith 2 жыл бұрын
That last line up could have gone on to great things. Even during his solo years, as he’d assembled players over multiple albums he could have still called the band wings - unless wings was actually himself, Linda and Denny in which case without the trio, it wouldn’t have been Wings.
@seerstone8982

@@TudorSmith Wing's had three line-up's, all were top notch. You are right about the trio being Wings. When the first guitarist, and drummer quit, Denny, Linda, and Paul recorded Band on the run. When the second line-up guitarist, and drummer left, the trio recorded London Town!

One of my top five McCartney (and Wings) albums. It's a shame Paul seems to take so much notice of chart placings and "journalists" who have probably written their reviews without even listening to a note. Getting Closer - as brilliant an opening track as on any solo Beatles album. That mentality in the rock press went right back to the start of the 1970s when scumbag Lennon fanboy and crappy writer Jann Wenner ordered a positive review of Ram (or was it the McCartney album, or both?) to be re-written as a scathing piece purely because he wanted to stay in John Lennon's good books. Tough, Wenner: John dismissed you soon afterwards. Lennon knew Wenner was a pseud and a phony. Back to the Egg is a really good album.

If McCartney’s peak was during the Beatles era, the Wings came a very close second for him. I like Tug of War and Flaming Pie from his solo years but like you I haven’t listened to his recent albums (2008 onwards). Personally I can’t listen to his voice lol
