The thematic call for taxon-limited character states (synapomorphies) kind of falls apart when we start talking about ANA-grade angiosperms and magnoliids, that are united in "sharing primitive character states"--which is totally not the same thing as having a taxon-limited derived state (the "apomorphy" part). Resigned to this reality, we spend much of this video profiling the "primitive flowering plant" as a model for identifying magnoliids (as well as the ANA plants).
