Whether it reads "too formal" really depends on how it's done. Are we all supposed to have plain white walls, a minimalist clock (that we don't even use to tell time), and a framed print? Nick only finds it intimidating because he wants to live like an austere monk, with plain everything.

I like “Victorian Clutter”. It feels very lounge-y and comfortable to me. It’s giving smoking jacket, pipe, and leather slippers. It’s falling asleep in the big chair with the newspaper on your chest, your feet up, and the dog by your side. “Victorian Clutter” is cozy; it’s casual and formal at the same time. It doesn’t have to be “stuffy”.

Eastlake and Morris are excellent examples of their era. I can't agree with Nick that Buckingham Palace, or Windsor or Balmoral, have Victorian decor. It is often quite French and goes farther back. Victorian isn't bright, sweepingly huge rooms with sparse furnishing. We know that when Victoria died, her son who despised her taste had them renovated. We could even drag in the White House which also isn't "Victorian," or "Gilded Age" as would have been more accurate in America. There were of course people, like Franklin Roosevelt's horrible mother, who modeled their home decor on what a sad, little widow in Britain liked, crowded, dark, perpetually looking backwards, but most opened the curtains and let in the sun, whether or not it faded something. What I want to know is when are we getting French styles again? French Provincial or any of the Louis clan?

Sounds fabulous ❤. A few years ago I got my hands on an original Victorian buffet from the 1880's with beautifull carvings for 300 bucks. The seller had to go down so much to the point where she said "Not getting any lower I would rather gift that thing to friends who enjoy it". Then I found it on marketplace and didn't dare to haggle, because it's worth every penny. I love the victorian style, though I try to mix it with more turn-of-the-century and pre-war pieces and style elements. I get what Nick sais about the Victorian style it can be to much if it's giving to "royal" vibes. But I go more for the Victorian apothecary/mad scientist vibes than something to elitist lol. So victorian really needs to be spread out well in a space I think

As a quilter, I mix patterns all the time. There is kinda of rule to mixing patterns. I find florals, stripes, plaids and polka dots all work well together. There also patterns that read as solids like a white on cream print its more of a really sutble pattern.

@kimscozyreads Not everyone has an eye for color. My suggestion is find a paint color pallet that you find pleasing and go from there. Also have a good mixture of light, medium and dark tones. I do not use solids at all because it will show and imperfect seem. So I use the prints that read as solids.

I mostly agree with Nick's point of view, but THIS is what I absolutely disagree with. Haha! I'm renovating my 1910 home, and my main concern is how I'll attach the hanging armchair (that I'm going to DIY) to my ceiling without ruining the original ceiling painting I plan to restore, and where the beams are. 😂 I have some motor restlessness issues and swinging is one thing that keeps my nervous system calm. As a kid, I used to swing for hours and it kept me grounded. I sold my rocking chair a few years back and have regretted it since. Also I collect Moomin mugs and plan to display them in my kitchen. I have 80 of them.

I think a lot of decor trends have the same issue that beauty trends had on social media a few years ago, which is that its easy to lose sight of what’s meant to be editoral vs. whats’s meant to be wearable. Like, sometimes the pictures you see on instragram is art for arts sake. When people talk about maximalism sometimes it reminds me of 2015 when makeup instagram made us all think it was normal to put on full contour and a glitter cut-crease whenever we left the house.
@n.normal1565
@n.normal1565 29 күн бұрын
Super good point about purposefully styled homes by designers! Never thought of homes in the context of editorial vs livable! It reminds me of that one photo that went around everywhere, a post-modern pastel haven, a penthouse apartment full to the brim of the absolute hottest dreamy pop whimsy, from that perfect white bubble sofa to the muted pop pink paint on the walls and every single vignette. The sunlight pouring into that lounge was unbelievable. That vaseline filter and the glow! It was extreme eye candy but it was not giving home. Nobody important spends that much on filling every corner with a trend item and nobody worth taking seriously can rationalize that kind of capitalistic and environmental waste. I do have one thing to say about the last point though.. live your freakin' life! LIVE IT. What's the point of aesthetics if you don't play with beauty to it's absolute fullest? There's a self-consciousness and inhibition there I'm not willing to trade for a wholly illusory promise of a future experience of looking back with no stylistic regrets. If you don't hate what you were doing three years ago, you're not living. I hate what I did last year. Lmfao I hate what I did YESTERDAY 🤭 but I do always want to let what I think is beautiful really be allowed. Acting true in the present when it comes to creativity, despite a fear of embarrassment in the future is more important than a moment's cringe at some glitter three years from now - whether it was glitter or the very demure and understated greige lipstick of 2017. Ultimately: if you think taking tentative steps now will save you from never having regrets... welp. The contour is nowhere near the problem and it shows. The ~ unstated ~ earthy monochrome minimalism is cringed about today. That sensible, feminine floral chintz feels musty as hell. The soft mint green and subtly cheerful pale yellow blight-palette of the 90s is giving smoker's house &hospital. The very accessible marble print contact paper counters really were thought to simplify the visual noise of the kitchen. So timeless. So non-threatening. The timeless aesthetic is at the mercy of human nature, as much as it pretends otherwise. We will never escape the cringe. Get real. Just go for it. I really just wanted to type this out. Katie, I don't know you, so nothing person. This is me just writing (I like writing! lol), just talkin about the phenomena of trend regret. Do whatever you think is gorg! Decorate however makes you happy. That's literally all that matters. And. If you're gonna cringe, at least be as entertaining as Nick about it 🤣

@ Completely agree on living your best life with whatever style makes you happy 😁 I hope I didn’t come off as saying “the individual people who do this are try-hard and cringey”, absolute not! Sing for the back of the theater! The point I meant to make was more like “I hope people, who would otherwise be happy with how they already are or what they already have, aren’t seeing these incredibly posed, niche designs and thinking they’ll be inadequate if they don’t achieve that level of aesthetic perfection every single day.” But thank you for replying 😁 I enjoyed reading it!

@@n.normal1565 i mean yes but also a lot of people are not being true to themselves and just copy what they see other people do online and i feel thats whats lacking. Authenticity. People forget to stress authenticity over concepts.
@n.normal1565
@n.normal1565 19 күн бұрын
@@vanillac0keh3ad When someone is creatively authentic they will never look dated? How? edit: I just need one person to explain the connection between the organic, timelessness of a human's authenticity, and marble coffee tables. And herringbone floors. And a linen striped throw pillow. Or anything else featured in a listicle called Timeless Pieces That Never Go Out Of Fashion (Updated For 2025 Palettes). There is no default core of a person's personality in which you strip back corn cob side tables and postmodern wiggles to find an Eames chair resting in the glow of an Anglepoise lamp. There is no pop art colour palette that you can desaturate until you find the appropriate shade of a person's soul, and there is absolutely no understated vignette that can save you from the fact that you will never escape somebody thinking you're a wanker. I honestly can't even with the phrase "it's obvious it's try hard and not organic". I must be talking to a highschooler. It's just so comically mean. Just be curious about weirder personalities. You will get such a better payoff.

Beachy/coastal decor likely looks very natural and authentic in your home given your location. A big thing with so many styles is authenticity. Beachy/coastal in Kansas wouldn’t work as well since Kansas is basically flat farmland as far as the eye can see. So modern farmhouse (without the signs preferably) would likely work well there as a style. Another example would be trying super modern decor in an old Victorian mansion or Victorian stuff in a glass cube house. The outside doesn’t match the inside in other words.

I grew up with traditional design and a love for antiques just like my mom. A lot of my family decorates that way, although a lot less formal and even as a kid I loved it and I thought the pictures and old movies depicting the decked out formal spaces were so beautiful. So, even though the Victorian style is naturally so formal (perhaps even stuffy) to me, it's so cozy and homey. I don't want to go super formal and feel like I'm stepping into a museum but when I get my own house it will lean traditional/victorian with elements of dark academia and British colonial in there too. I've had a deep love for history and science my entire life.

I get so annoyed with this type of comment/attitude because im 33 now and can remember this exact attitude being applied to maximalist aesthetics maybe 13 years ago in favor of minimalism. And seeing it wrap back around again to the opposite with the same eye roll inducing arrogance is so annoying to me lol why cant people ever let different vibes exist at the same time? Why does one extreme always have to be perceived as better than the other in the cultural zeitgeist? As you age you see how nothing is new under the sun and whats perceived as new or cool or whatever is just always recycling the past anyway. Once upon a time was under the false impression society progresses and builds upon itself but it honestly doesnt 😂

Paint sheen has traditionally varied based on use/traffic. Flat or eggshell for most walls, eggshell or semi for bathrooms, and gloss for trim. Flat being the least cleanable, eggshell and semi for medium traffic, and high gloss for areas that get scuffed or come in contact with mops or other cleaning devices. I was taught that you never throw money at trends. You spend money on good quality things that you love and those will always be in style.

The swing in house is actually a very south asian touch. I recall those being in all my grandparents homes. But yes those were different times and style of homes. But we have actually carried them into our modern homes too! Not gonna lie those were absolutely fun you can just sit on one read A book or gossip with others. These arent like swings that you are supposed to swing too high they are more like rockers in air. I dont think they fit in kidult unless the swing is in absolutely kids aesthetics 😅 I met a couple of folks in nyc who did kidult styles. All im said was bye and never looked back.

Kidult honestly seems like an extremely New York thing to do. I'm out here near Seattle, and idk why, but it just doesn't seem like much of a west coast thing to me. @nicoletim8095 you might be right! I've never seen kidult in portland, Chicago or most Midwest. But the again nyc folks are quicker in adopting trends then they trickle late towards other cities. Although in my experience folks with kidult homes seem to have a very peculiar personality thats so overwhelming 😅 makes me feel adulting isn't a skill everyone can do.

That trend was sometimes called Provencial or Provencale. After WWI and WWII in Europe and most rural areas in the US, people decorated and repaired with what they could find or had. That explains the mismatched textures, colors, prints, and patterns within the house and odd materials used outside in the yards and gardens, like old toilets (cleaned) for flower planters; and old tires cut and painted white with flowers around the mailbox). People became very creative and recycled everything! Also, primary colors are best used in a baby's nursery as they learn about color. When the child is older and learns about colors and art; then, change their bedroom colors to their favorites. My attic apartment is so mix and match that I call it Eclectic Granny. Nothing actually matches but it is comfortable! LOL!

We recently renovated our main bathroom and added on an ensuite and both bathrooms are glossy subway tiles, but only halfway up the walls so it didn’t look like a New York Subway Station lol. We chose gloss as they bounce the light around the room and make the room brighter. They look really great. Have to say I do love the matte subway tiles though. Sorry Nick, I think you're doomed to suffer through Victorian revival, judging from the comments. More importantly, vintage/antique trends tend to chase the cheapest furniture and accessories. Thirty years ago EVERY antique store and flea market was packed with old oak/mahogany pieces, and people paid huge sums of money for beautiful victorian four-posters, washstands, cabinets and dining sets. Then mid-century came in and prices tanked. People have been dumping their family's 'brown' furniture, china, silver, and everything else. Now it's impossible to go to an auction and not find solid wood Victorian/Edwardian sideboards or bureaus or chests of drawers for stupidly cheap prices, and the more common 1940s and 50s 'traditional' stuff literally goes for 'please take this away' money. I'm a MCM scandi-style teak addict, and I have two quarter-sawn oak sideboards, three curved-glass cabinets, far too many barristers bookcases and a stupid number of very comfortable formal armchairs, because the auction prices were too low not to buy. You are doomed. Victorian stuff is coming back, because young people buy the cheapest good cool stuff they can find, and that's where trends start.

I did high gloss because they were small spaces with limited natural light. I like the reflective quality in there. I use the matte everywhere else, though. But it’s fun to use high gloss if you don’t have smooth walls. Dark gloss plays well with textures.

When I downsized from a large 5 bedroom home to my small 1400 sq foot ranch. I had to use what I had. That is to say my living room and dining room are more formal and fit the Victorian colonial. I get it reads more formal but it was very expensive when it was purchased. I’ve used the same three colors throughout the house to mesh the formal traditional furniture to make it look more cohesive Very little pattern mostly solid colors

Would love to make Nick tour a house in Michigan lol Everybody's got maps of the great lakes and paintings of freighters, maybe a vintage life preserver or anchor hanging on the wall. (we love you Nick)

I've never seen that growing up in the Detroit suburbs but that would be a pretty cool design style.

I agree about high-gloss paint--it shows every lump and bump.

I painted my circle pattern plaster ceilings ultra high-gloss years ago. Love, love, LOVE them. It not only helps highlight the pattern it brightens up the room like crazy with the reflection.
