It's from the McCoy Tyner album "Looking Out," 1982. There are 6 tracks on the album, and Phyllis Hyman sings 3 (the others are all instrumentals). The album features Ndugu Leon Chancler, Gary Bartz, Carlos Santana, and many others. In the early 1980s, Phyllis' voice was NEVER BETTER - could still reach her high notes, and yet that sultry depth was just starting and developing. The other two songs are "Love Surrounds Us Everywhere" and "I'll Be Around," all written or co-written by McCoy Tyner. One of my FAVORITE albums by her, and she's featured only on half of it. The breathy term/lyric "remember" became something of a signature phrase by her, such as in her song "Remember Who You Are" on the Norman Connors album of the same title (1993).

McCoy Tyners' Looking Out LP is one of my all time greats from the '70's jazz era. All 3 Phyllis Hyman tracks are fabulous! Always included on playlists with dinner parties and when entertaining guests are these songs...and always commented on by friends that they have been long forgotten along with many other performers from that era. We'll miss you McCoy!

I agree, the Phyliss Hyman cuts represented some of her best work. Tyner does the songs justice with his open style of playing.
@stevehaddad4604 жыл бұрын
@@jazzatnight With an all star cast of artists on instruments such as Alphonse Mouzon (the best jazz drummer until his passing in my opinion), Carlos Santana and Stanley Clarke Tyner's slightly evolved to the early 80's progressive jazz sound shines, accompanied with the incredible vocals of Phyllis makes this a long forgotten gem as so many other artists such as Rodney Franklin ect...
@stevehaddad4604 жыл бұрын
@@Sweetpjoe Thanks! I love the forgotten jazz era of the early 70's-the early 90's. Because of the vinyl LP to CD conversion gap of the early 80's most of these classics were never offered on CD format here and thus not well known.
