Connor McDavid was taken down in a net front battle away from the puck but recovered to win a race to the far corner, only to have his stick slashed out of his hands. There was no call on the play.

The real answer is it was absolutely a penalty that wasn't called because Edmonton was already on the powerplay and the refs didn't want to sink the Canucks.

you're absolutely right and it's not uncommon, see it all the time. like the missed boarding call when Petey was crushed from behind a few games back. Canucks were up 1 and on the powerplay.
@karlkarlsson912623 күн бұрын
It is a penalty that the refs either decided to not call due to Edmonton already having a PP, or they missed it.

I know a former NHL referee. I can base next to nothing on that, though I'd say he was one of the good guys. I'd also say they have sellouts available for any game worth tilting to one side. Don't kid yourselves kids - they play favorites.

we have the benefit of replay and slow motion not to mention seeing every angle available. Officiating is tough and its instinctive. You need to have 4 officials just to watch the play. Yes calls will be missed but in general they get the majority of the calls right
@LaSTBlazin23 күн бұрын
True , too many people complain about the refs and don't understand how hard it is to make all the right calls given how fast the game is and limited angles sometimes.

Opinions vary. I've seen too many egregiously obvious calls "missed" to think for one minute this Gong Show isn't rigged just enough to slide by.

Back in the day it was called a stick check, usually a penalty nowadays. Slashing was only on the hands/wrists.
@pyRoy623 күн бұрын
How many decades back was that? Slashing down to knock a stick out of someone's hands is almost an automatic call, going back to at least the turn of the century.
@kwaty23 күн бұрын
They had to implement that rule because today’s ridiculously priced sticks snap like twigs & players were starting to do it on purpose.

@@alelectric2767 Slashing down on a stick has been getting called a slash for a while. At least 15-20 years, I'm sure. I might check out some stuff from early 2000s anyway, just to see if it's as automatic as it is now...

The only reason this wasn’t called is because they already were on the pp and van had taken a couple pims. Not sure why the refs change the rules with the flow of the game, this happens ALL the time!
@TripleR_Sings23 күн бұрын
at first I thought he was doing it to Nuge's stick, but it turns out it was McDavid's...that was a pretty obvious motion...when a team is on the PP, the whistle seems to go away, doesn't matter how obvious or not...I don't agree, because if the team on the PP loses their advantage due to another penalty, then the refs have robbed the team (partially) of the original penalty call...I have seen this many times in this series alone...

This really shouldn't even be a penalty, hold on to your stick....if it snaps the stick then I can understand.
@Bullshirt198322 күн бұрын
nah.. that is just as illogical. We've all seen a guy go to take a wrist shot and his stick falls apart.. with the nature of the stick a snap means basically nothing.
@dallasburgess532923 күн бұрын
...no penalty. Just hold on to your 🤬ing stick next time.
@Donkey_League23 күн бұрын
Slashing is the act of a player swinging his stick at an opponent, whether contact is made or not. Any forceful or powerful chop with the stick on an opponent's body, the opponent's stick, or on or near the opponent's hands that, in the judgment of the Referee, is not an attempt to play the puck, shall be penalized as slashing. copy and pasted directly from the NHL rulebook lol, also he as definitely "holding" his stick you can see it almost break in the slow mo @ 0:14

@Bullshirt198322 күн бұрын
Should have been a penalty for sure. That being said, the drop or break rule is moronic. It's the action that should be penalized and not the outcome. The structural integrity of a stick or the grip a player has on his own stick are totally out of the control of the player doing the slash. It's just like a double minor for blood. A guy could be internally hemorrhaging and it's two minutes, give him a 2mm nick and it's 4.. that is very illogical.
