As a german, I can say these ice pops shouldn't be soft if you just got them, so it's likely yours melted a bit while you got back to the hotel. They should be very hard and so frozen to the packaging you have to warm them in your hand for like a minute to first get them out. Although maybe the mcdonalds ones are different, I haven't been there in years. But you can get them at basically every grocery store as well.

I remember a long time ago my mom and my sister watched a video where the KFC in China or Japan I can't remember is different where instead of fries or any of the side servings we're used to are substituted with rice. Regular White rice. And in India their mcds substituted a lot of their foods b/c of some folks that don't eat 🐄 for religious purposes. For example they have chickpea patties for 'meat'. As a teenager then when I watched all of that I didn't know much about these fast food chains all over the world and how different countries adapted to the menu. I can tell you as someone who has been raised sheltered up until i was 18 it that moment in time it really opened my eyes how much variety is out there

They know people here are addicted. Prices are high, food is trash level, and we have fewer option at McDonald's. Until people stop forking over their money it's going to stay this way. They know they don't have to impress anyone here or cut us deals. Unfortunately, people complain online, but still go and pay for it.

@@illhaveanother8173 Actually if a person's been paying attention, fast food places like McDonalds have been adding a lot of new items. It's the cost of the new items that seem to be causing an increase in prices. Back when the menus at fast food restaurants were simpler, the items were cheaper. All the ingredients needed to make all the new items affect supply chains causing prices to increase, restaurants have to pay more for those ingredients and carry the charges on to customers. Also not to mention all the "collaborations" with certain celebrities, McDonalds has to pay them for using their image, name, etc.

McD used to have actual side salads in the US when I was growing up in the mid/late 80's. They were all pre-made and sitting in a tabletop glass front refrigerator case behind the counter. They would come in a clear plastic clamshell so you could see the enticing salad inside. Originally they came with shredded cheddar cheese, but they later swapped the cheese for grated carrot because it looked the part. While great in salads, carrot is NOT a substitute for cheese under any circumstances!!

Also, only during a promotional period can you ask for it in the app. Otherwise, you ask for a side of it and they plop it into one of a variety of containers: condiment cup with lid, McNugget 4-pack box, sundae lid with a small drink lid on top, etc. They get creative based on what they have but they always say yes!

One big difference between US and UK/EU bread is, we use less sugar this side of the pond, as it was once said (forget if it was serious or a joke) that bread in the US would need to be sold as "cake" over here due to it containing much higher levels of sugar at the time, I think it was directed at Subway mostly, given they made their bread to US recipes, and had to lower the sugar content to fall in line with EU food standards... :P
@ohhhhmydarling

But the US is such a big place with tons of different bread options. French, sourdough, rye, Italian, etc. don't have sugar in them over here either. White bread, corn bread, and other variations like Hawaiian bread have a higher sugar content because they are known as sweeter breads and that's just how they are made.

Compared to the rest of Europe German McDonald's is also unique in that they serve the McRib, year round I believe unlike the US does. Had it in Hamburg once, wasn't really that good if I'm being honest after all the hype from Americans. I think part of the hype stateside is just that it's not always available.

People do request Big Mac sauce on the side in the states but I don't think it comes in a tub like that and it's not listed on the menu.

The McCrispy is available in my area of the US. I’m in NE Pennsylvania and we have the spicy mccrispy and the regular mccrispy. It’s been available for a couple years now. I wasn’t aware that it isn’t available in all of the US. 😮

Well Emmy you aren't a food snob!! I love it! You love Totino's Pizza Rolls, you ate them as a kid. Your parents were great, they let you have some junk food. We didn't get them much. I am with you, I don't like plant based meat. In Paris McDonald's has salads on the menu. I love, love, love deserts in the UK. Lots of flavor and not overly sweet, just right sweet. Such decadence.

Welcome to Germany! The "McFreezy" is actually the rebranded McD version of an old-time childhood favorite called a *"Calippo".* Introduced by Unilever in Europe in 1984, in Germany under their Langnese brand. However, you should _really_ go try actual _German_ fast food such as *Currywurst* and *Döner kebab* (which was of course co-opted from Turkey through the immigrant community.) Düner is also much more efficient. Try getting a filling McDonals meal for seven Euros. Good luck. Many Döner shops also have lots of other great dishes such as Lahmacun and sweet, sweet Baklava. *Iskender kebab* is the exact same meat but served on a dish _(Teller)_ on slices of flatbread. You can tell them what kinds of toppings and sauces you want or don't want on the Döner. I find it definitely needs Tsatsiki and hot sauce _(scharfe Sauce)_ but no cocktail sauce / Ranch dressing which some shops are prone to add if you don't stop them. Also do yourself a favor and try *German bread.* It is darker, heavier and miles better than the fluffy white anglo stuff and there are literally hundreds of variants. If you want a real treat, try to find an actual artisinal bakery which shouldn't be too hard in Berlin of all places. It is the single best thing about actual German cuisine. The TS in the Big Mac literally means "tomato and salad". They introduced that for the Big Mac only recently but the *Hamburger Royal TS* has been available for ages. Which is of course a European quarter pounder with some flame grill aroma, in a bid to fight off Burger King. Recently they have started putting out a Double Royal which I actually prefer in the "cheese" version over the TS. The McD pizza rolls must be new or seasonal, never seen those before. The Big Mac sauce must also be a recent introduction, they did not sell it separately the last time I used McD about two months ago. At least not at my nearest franchise out here in the sticks. Could be a big city thing. They tried to sell certain burgers with an experimental side of cheese dip back then, I don't know what came of that. I find the ready-made Schorle usually contains too much fruit juice to be truly isotonic; the ideal ratio for that is two parts water and one part apple juice. So if I do buy ready-made Schorle, I will usually get an extra sparkly water to water it down some more. The McDonalds curry dipping sauce is to all intents and purposes identical to *Hela brand curry ketchup* which you can buy at supermarkets in largish 800ml bottles. Other dips such as Sweet & Sour and Sour Cream are available under the Develey label, though in smaller, more expensive bottles. Looking at more traditional German cuisine, my recommendations are to try 1) _Riefkooche_ (high German: Reibeplätzchen, Reibekuchen, Kartoffelpuffer) which are shallow-fried *potato pancakes.* Great with apple sauce or sugar beet syrup, which we call _Rübenkraut._ 2) _Sauerbraten_ which is a marinated, sour pot roast. The Rhenish variant has raisins in the gravy. It is mostly a cut of beef these days though hardcore traditionalists swear by horse meat. Marinading helps to tenderize stringy cuts of meat and mellow out the harsh horse flavor somewhat. The traditional side dishes are red cabbage _(Rotkohl)_ and potato mash _(Kartoffelpüree)._ 3) _Kassler_ which is lean-ish salted pork, traditionally served with sauerkraut (cooked! we don't eat that stuff raw usually), potato mash and sauteed onions. The only pork dish I have really been missing since I gave up pork in my teens. 4) If you're in the South, _Käsespätzle_ which is basically a regional kind of noodles fried up with cheese and sauteed onions. So, German mac and cheese but better. 5) In Hessia: _Handkäs mit Musigg_ which is a very perverted stinky cheese marinated in vinegar and chopped onions, then spread on bread. Along with the marinated chopped onions. A love-or-hate dish. Needless to say, I love it. They say the "music" refers to the gas it will give you. The ingredients for all these dishes should be readily available everywhere in Germany, especially in the cities. Few Germans will actually marinade their own beef or salt their own pork these days. Or ferment their own Sauerkraut. It comes in cans. So if you use some sort of appartment with a kitchen on your trip, you can try preparing them yourself. They even come frozen (as do sides like Rotkohl and Spinat and Grünkohl) and as complete microwave dinners. YMMV 6) If you're in Cologne, don't miss out on the brewery restaurants, especially *Früh.* The Cologne kind of beer is a bit of an acquired taste but Früh used to serve a really mean venison goulash _(Rehragout)_ and rabbit goulash _(Hasenpfeffer.)_ Even though the latter is actually a _Westphalian_ dish, not a Rhenish one. (Rhineland and Westphalia, which are very different to say the least, were only squished together in a single state after the war by the Brits, which has always been their go-to method of making other people extra miserable.) But I digress! Anyway, have a nice trip! And stuff your face like there is no tomorrow!

Depending on where you are in Europe it’s safe to leave your bag unattended or not. France and Brussels is famous for their thieves and pickpockets. Here in Austria and also in Switzerland, Germany and Italy I always felt very safe. Never had anything stolen 😃👍🏻

Welcome to Germany, Emmy. Even though Berlin might not be the most beautiful place in Germany I hope you are having, or had, a good time in my country. The Big Mac TS is a temporary promotional item on the German McDonald's menu, not a standard permanent item. The "TS" stands for "Tomate Salat" which means tomato and lettuce. There is also a TS version of the classic quarter pounder, which is called the "Royal Käse", the "royal cheese" in Germany. It is called "Royal TS" and it does have lettuce, tomato, a sandwich style sauce and one less slice of cheese and no pickles. The Big Mac sauce is also a temporary promotional item. It will probably be gone in a week. About the fries, I am sure they are different in Germany. In the United States they use beef flavoring in the oil, I don't think they do that in Germany. The history behind that is that McDonald's USA actually used to fry their fries in beef fat but then they changed it to vegetable oil with added beef flavoring for several reasons. About the cap attached to the bottle, I do not want to get too political so I am just going to say that I think it is stupid and annoying and all people I know hate this. You know how scientists and inventors used to try to improve our lives? Well, in these strange times they try to make it harder. The waffle fries are ALSO a temporary item. Most of the time McDonald's Germany has one alternative to the regular fries. It kinda switches from curly fries to waffle fries and back. The McCrispy is a nice addition and it is quite new but not a promotional item, it will probably stay on the menu for a while. The Pizzataschen are mostly tasteless and overall a disappointment. They are also a temporary promotional item, McDonald's had them before and I have no idea why they brought them back because they are really not that good. And they are overpriced. About the McPlant, I only had the regular one and it was okay, but I see no reason to order this. The McPlant Nuggets on the other hand are really good. The vegetarian stuff that is inside is not that awesome, but the batter is way better than the one of the regular McNuggets since it is way more crispy. I actually used to be addicted to those, even though I am not a vegetarian. I wish they would take the coating from the McPlant nuggets and apply them to the regular Chicken McNuggets. That would be awesome. OK bye

I think that the best part about traveling is definitely eating! I always go for local dishes and cuisines be it in restaurants or street food. I stay as far away as possible from Mc Donalds and the likes. But I like seeing you comparing and studying different Mc Donald's in different countries.
