Keep in mind most fast food places not too long ago costed as much as at a proper restaurant (maybe not at those fancy ones, but all I'm saying is you could get a proper meal for the same price), and it may seems the same for Japan, too. For example 7-Eleven in Japan is vastly different to 7-Eleven in America. One is a name brand trusted, almost "whole foods" quality type store, the other is a convenience store. KFC in Japan is assoicated with Christmas, and it so crazy you have to order the family meals months in advance. Branding is different in Japan because it's practically a separate market; The off sea companies are allowed to remake the image however they want as long as it generates a profit and doesn't effect other incomes.
