McDonalds is filled with people just because it's cheap, fast and somewhat addicting. Not a single italian would tell you it's not utter trash, though. There are lots of chains that kinda serve fast food in Italy, all of them way, WAY superior than McDonalds (let alone the real restaurants or the thousands of pizzerie al taglio). You just had to be americans all the way...

In the U.S. we don't have any real food culture... I understood that when I lived abroad for a while. If you are used to eat processed crap all of your life you just need time and maybe some directions to begin appreciating real food... Sad but true.

I traveled extensively in Italy over several years from North to South, East to West and had exactly the same experience with the food. From small towns to large cities the vast majority of the restaurants I visited were average to below average. There were exceptions but I wasn't impressed with the food at all. It seems improbable that I was just unlucky dozens and dozens of times.

I wouldn't knock McDonald's outside of the USA. My wife and I went to Barcelona and Rome back in March for our 10th anniversary. In Barcelona they have this CBO that is actually quite amazing. In Rome, we found that we'd be running/walking from one site to another so much, that the only option sometimes for just a quick bite before heading to the hotel to get ready for dinner was McDonald's. However, I will say that McD's really does step up their McCafe game a lot in Rome. You get real plates and mugs. It makes Starbucks (at least here in the USA) look like the USA version of McDonalds. Anyway, really loved the drone footage you were able to get. Really amazing!

When u grow up eating mechanically separated food and artificial ingredients it's hard to appreciate actual real food in its simplest form.... which is what Italian food is all about... so I don't fault them too much, but it's also a reason why other cultures dislike Americans tourists sometimes

Mike Kelley dunno... was making a generalization, I'm sure there are less McDonald's which means they are likely to be more a novelty or one off which is why it would be more crowded. Just a hunch, not based on facts.... my personal opinion is that McDonald's wouldn't be the "Best" meal in most countries.... I love me some McDonald's so I'm not knocking Mickey D's at all, but to say throughout the whole trip they couldn't find one spot that was above a Big Mac? Seems suspect.... or it maybe their preconceived notions of what Italian Food should be from growing up on Olive Garden, Buck Di Beppo etc has skewed their notions on what Italian food should look and taste like.... food is subjective anyway so take it as you wish

Italy has one of the lowest numbers of mc donalds per capita of all middle european countries...not surprisingly, as their food is absolutely outstanding. Who says otherwise knows obviously little about food. Its not meant offensive..its just a fact. Saying otherwise, Its like saying all good photographers in the US are immigriants. ;-)...just teasing.

I was in Rome last year and ate where the locals ate but didn't find the food all that special: lots of pasta and tomato sauce in all its variations. In fact, the best food was on the Royal Caribbean cruise (departing from Rome) as there were much more variety and freshers. May be it was just Rome?

I am italian and if you want my opinion here it is: they are saying that mcdonald is the most popular resaurant in italy, well... i don't think mcdonald and restaurant are words that can be put togheter, also in italy there are very few places where you can find mcdonald excluding the principal city (Napoli,Milano,Roma), so they are tipacally visited by teens because it's different from our culture and also is really cheap. I don't want to be the one saying that every italian food is good, everyone has its own taste( especially for foreigners), and also every country has it's own delicious dishes but not every restauraunt can make a good quality dish. This said i hope it was only a click bait title, because if you really thinks so after have eaten at least one of many tipical italian dishes, i really have no words.
