I finally received my McFarlane Toys Kickstarter Spawn figure, both Classic and Modern, and while there's a lot of positives, there's also some negatives that can't be ignored.

McFarlene Toys is such a mystery, the new Witcher figures show they can squeeze in some of the best articulation around, but they seem allergic to the notion most of the times.

Yea it seems that Todd will always go for detail. But I know what you mean, I have a bunch of the DC Multiverse figs and yea the Witcher figs have way better articulation.

These figures are exactly what he wanted. These were designed as a tribute and to look good in a single pose. He'll give us the more pose friendly version in the line that's coming.

I don’t think this original sculpt was meant to have articulation. It was sculpted in a classical contrapposto pose. When a company creates a figure, they’re sculpted digitally in a basic pose and then the articulation is cut in. As Robo pointed out, they did listen to the fans and added articulation, but still wanted to retain that original sculpted render they had done for them. I forgot the artist’s name but he posted the original sculpt for this guy digitally. Safe to say, this figure was not produced along the same pipeline as your average McFarlane Toys figure from the get go. It looks like the upcoming Spawn universe figures Todd is teasing are being produced along the same pipeline we’re used to with the same articulation.

"A very Todd thing to do" is exactly what I thought when I started seeing people complaining about the cape, the pre-posed torso, etc. All valid gripes, but also just so like Todd to only take fan service so far without sacrificing his vision of the product. Any longtime fan should know to expect these things from Todd 😎

Spawn: stuck between the realm of the living and the dead, not unlike these figures being stuck between the realm of statues and action figures. That may sound a bit harsh but I've voiced my opinion a few times on these figures, needless to say I've been collecting NECA and DC Collectibles figures so for years I had nice looking but less articulated figures and I still like a lot of those figures, heck the first time I voiced my opinion on these Spawn figures someone thought I was a Marvel Legends fanboy, I didn't even start collecting Marvel Legends until 2017! In that sense I think that's the worst thing to come from these figures, the people who have gotten so defensive about them to the point of toxicity which in this hobby is just unpleasant to put up with. Looking at them these Spawn figures just give me a headache with the more modern articulation that seems to be actively sabotaged by the sculpt. I appreciate that they listened to fans and added it but things like the torso, head and especially the cape kill a lot of that extra articulation and posing opportunities. I think that they should have just stuck to their guns and made them less articulated, less people would want them but it would further justify the Kickstarter as I'm sure there are those who would want that throwback style figure with the classic packaging, plus they'd likely be in the minority of figure collectors which again would better justify the Kickstarter, at least to me it would. Either way I'm not a massive Spawn fan but I like his design and action figures so I'm happy with the MK11 version and I don't think I'll ever need another. The points I made above are from the perspective of someone who collects action figures so in that sense I don't hate these figures or anything, I simply see these as 'not that great as action figures' which combined with my lack of interest in Spawn it was an easy pass, but I completely get those who are angry about them.

Im a mid tier Spawn fan. Liked him in the 90's, liked the old cartoon. I mostly bought in for nostalgia reasons and because I knew they would be worth more than what I was paying. Especially with Todd's autograph.

I just got the classic as I shared on the Fwoosh. But dang it’s an awesome presentation in the clamshell. I’ll probably put it back in the box after I’ve had fun displaying. It is a vicious sculpt. I really like the teeth coming through the mask. I also like that screaming into the night head too. Classic version was worth every penny.

Man, I seriously cannot wait for my classic Spawn to arrive. The MK one is cool but the red is too dark and the cape wasn't huge and 90s enough. I hope they do a more articulated classic Spawn as part of the upcoming retail line.

Hey, Robo! Didn’t know if it would be of interest to you or your viewers, but as a writer, I’m combining my love of toys and the written word for a short horror story. You and your reviews have helped inspire me to tackle this concept, so much so that I’m thinking of calling the protagonist Gus, as an Easter Egg of sorts ;) It’ll be about a toy reviewer/collector getting a line on a rare collectible and his strange meet-up with the guy who owns it, with chills and frights to follow. I’ve already shared the idea with a publisher and they want the story. Now, I just need to write it!

Excited to get my classic soon, always knew these wouldn't quite measure up the standard market articulation releases. Todd is his own worst enemy when it comes to sculpt vs articulation, he needs to let the past go make the 12 inch figures and a statue line for sculpts and let 7 inch figures be what people expect them to be.

They use the exact same mold to make both. McFarlane said in an Instagram post that he added the green daggers to spawn because the Batman figure had a brand new mold that he wanted to reuse.

I backed for the classic figure because it's the look I like with the colors and slim frame( and I just don't like the big gauntlet and the big boot )so I'm pleased with that ,besides getting the sword and then nekroplasm effect= sweet. The matter of the fact is that the design of the torso and the articulation is exactly what McFarlane promised in the initial pitch you can see still the video when he's first showing the prototype articulation and it's basically what we got, people wanted everything from the figure and it was just too much :at the end of the day it was a $40 figure you can't ask a level of possability and detail and accessories like I don't know something from Storm collectibles that cost more like triple the price.

Todd couldn't have been more clear about what to expect from these figures. Especially if you've always followed Mcfarlane [you knew exactly what to expect from this]. Are there really that many adults put off by the fact that you can't play with this figure? Of all my Neca, Black Series & Mcfarlane figures, this thing hands down just looks so much better than anything else in my collection. Very happy to be apart of this. Great review!

Nice, objective review. I just missed these last year by a month after the Kickstarter ended, as I was getting back into Spawn after 18 years. The prototype's look wasn't for me, but then the actual figure looked awesome (at least the Classic does). I ended up picking up the Trilogy for about 3x the price 😬. The cape hinders the ability to really play with the figures, but they have a lot of shelf presence. You plop them down and they look amazing. That was always McFarlane's strong suit. Making statuesque figures with amazing sculpt and paint, and a ton of shelf presence. I've collected almost nothing but McFarlane figures (nothing but Spawn really), but now I'm starting to get into collecting DC related figures. Mafex stands out with their excellent sculpts and articulation, and I'm collecting McFarlane's DC Multiverse stuff too. I'm really enjoying your channel and you've got a great review style, probably the most informative and enjoyable I've seen on KZbin. Keep up the good work 👍🏼

Saw this on Instagram so I'm not trying to take credit just trying to spread the word: If you own the mk11 spawn and the Kickstarter you can swap the torso onto the Kickstarter legs remove the mk ones arms and also use the Kickstarter arms as well and boom no pre posed torso I did it with mine and I think it's great. Use the modern spawn unless you're willing to paint your mk to match the red pattern. Edit: the al Simmons head fits on the mk just use a little heat. The Lace face unfortunately does not.

I got the trilogy and sold the modern and Artist Proof and pretty much broke even with a few extra bucks. It’s a nice figure but the non removable cape is truly my biggest gripe.

I'm kind of glad I didn't get in on these. To me the moment I saw the positioning of the torso it just looked so awkward. Honestly, even though it's lacking torso articulation I still think these would've been ten times better if the torso was just in a more neutral pose, it really feels like a cop out to give it articulation but keep that torso because that has just resulted in a figure with okay articulation that basically only looks good in more or less one pose. I think they should've either re-sculpted the torso and also provided a swappable cloth cape or just made it a statue imo, because it looks great but its an awkward in between of a figure and a statue with it having a lot of articulation in the arms and legs that isn't useful because of the torso and neck area as well as the hard shell cape. Its like with early marvel select how the sculpts were great but the articulation largely just broke up the sculpt rather than making them posable.

Well, their value can also go down or stay the same if the Spawn line releases better action figures or at least figures more appealing to the collector community. Buying toys for the sole purpose of reselling them at a higher price isn't always a smart move.

I think it's great that the kickstarter had such a massive success - even if the figure didn't end up being a proper "figure". With the release of the mandarin spawn, and supposedly more spawn figures being made, I could easily see Mcfarlane toys making a more traditional comic spawn figure pretty soon.

As soon as I saw that the torso wasn't articulated and had that twist, I sold mine for $200 on eBay before I even got it. I made the right choice!

You should have kept it for a while and doubled or tripled that. The figure wouldn't have worked with a torso joint. The cape is too heavy and it wouldn't have been able to use the joint. They tried to include that joint and have a removable cape, but they changed it to what it is since it wouldn't have worked together in the end. This figure is not supposed to be your typical figure. There will likely be a version of both in the new Spawn toy line that will include the joints but have a build that makes them more pose friendly. I think they should have made the cape removable and also included a well made soft goods with wires version for people who prefer that. That way you can provide all the joints and give people a cape that can be moved around since his cape is basically alive.

Awesome review Robo. I can't help but cringe at the toy itself, though. I get that it was supposed to be an homage to the classic figure, but it doesn't seem to really be up to snuff with the rest of the products that McFarlane has been putting out. I was interested because there was supposed to be an ab joint to counter the contrapposto, but Todd phased it out in the middle of crowdfunding and that gave me warning signals. I'm glad I passed up on it, but I'm still happy for your review.
