Thanks! Yeah it’s just an easy pattern and cheap to tie. That’s why I tie it. It’s not really a pattern per say, just a way of tying. It is close to something called a frenchi but, with synthetic materials

I love this fly, I tie it since a long time. I tie it even easier, just some golden or brown atron dubbing and the fluo orange hotspot.

So no tail like the black one with silver wire rib? Or you don’t even add the rubbing? Yeah for sure! Probably not fully needed. Not for all situations at least. To make it quicker I’d agree with you that that would be much easier. I think I’d have a few in the box with rubbing though Incase the fish get picky. Ever have trouble on getting strikes without the rubbing?

@@McFlyAngler yes i don't tue a tail to this flys, because I tie it on round pupa hooks, so a tail wouldn't make it better. I also tied them like you in the past, but I think there is no ribbing needed, if you use antron dubbing. I think the most important thing for this fly is just the fluorescent hotspot. It catches anyway. But sometimes I use ribbing and tail too, for example when I tie it on a straight hook. I just tie it so easy, because it's one of the flys, I use when I am fishing between many trees. There I prefer easy flys, because I often catch trees :D but this combination of brown/green and fluo orange is deadly anyway and one of the best nymph patterns

I’m right with you regarding easy flies. If you look at my boxes, they consist of simple flies like zebras, compardum, and these. If I’m fishing streamers then simple stuff as well. Of course I tie some complicated flies for video which after tying a dozen or more for practice before the video shoot, I have extras I take with me. I do notice there are times that those patterns will catch more fish, so occasionally I’m glad that I have some more complicated flies with me. However for the most part (maybe 80% of the time or more) the simple “box filling” type flies do the job and I can fish them all day long with great results. It just depends on the fishery and the mood of the fish that day or hour. As for loosing flies to trees, I totally get ya! Have you seen that video where I fish that tiny creek and catch a ton of native cutthroat up in Colorado? That was the tightest stream I’ve ever fished. Never did I get a chance to cast, and many of the casts that I did make were sling shot casts cause of no room at all. That’s some of my favorite fishing. I get not wanting to loose flies that take a while to tie. I lost maybe 1-1.5 dozen flies that trip, and a few were stimulators which take a good while to tie. Most of the fishing was dry fly fishing there though as nymphing was tough due to the depth of the creek. But it was a blast! Just a lot of tying after to replenish my stock. Haha!

@@McFlyAngler oh yes boxfillers are great. And yes I have already watched your video where you were fishing the small creek. I love that type of fishing, that's why I also love boxfillers. But as you I always have some flys with me, which took a long time of tying. For example realistic flies, when the water is slow or when I'm fishing in a lake. My favourite boxfiller is this one: round hook (for czech nymphs, freshwater shrimps and caddis pupas) with a tungsten bead (every color works great), some golden, brown or grey antron dubbing and fluo red/orange bodythread/floss as hotspot right in front of the bead like you did in the video. It's probably the best nymph, the most important sign is the fluo red/orange hotspot. Nymphs with that hotspot often work best.

I'm looking to get the best bang for my buck on a good vise and bobbin tool for my 19 yr old fly fishing crazed son. Any suggestions because Amazon reviews show nothing worth buying unless $300 range for vice!!!

I’ve only used Slotted beads for jig hooks, that is a bend in the hook shank. I think they will work for all jig hooks including the 60 degree ones. Otherwise, just use the regular tungsten If your not doing the jig style. Risen sells those as well!

I like the concept of a one size fits all nymph. I prefer to keep things simple. My question: since this nymph is weighted like it is, do you let the current move it forward as it bounces along the bottom, or do you fish it under an indicator? How do you have the most success?

Yeah me too man. So for fishing, you can euro nymph style if you want. I fish both that way or under indicator depending on the situation. It’s versatile.

i have a simple question. i am fishing with a 3wt setup. i am new to fly fishing, but i heard that the size and weight of the fly is important and that with a 3wt you cannot throw big flies. why use a wolfram bead then instead of a plastic one? it make the fly weight 10times more. is it better or worst? i know you want the fly to sink, but wont it affect the castability?

A tunsten bead should cast ok on a 3wt, however since your new you might have a little trouble. I would stick with standard nymphs. Brass beads don’t weigh much so, just use those. Also if your going with a huge nymph, say size 10+ then yeah tunsten will be heavy, but a smaller size 14-20 or so should be ok with a 3wt. Just keep practicing your cast and soon you should be able to get some good distance with that 3wt even with a heavier fly.

Yeah man, glad you like the videos. So still to this day I will occasionally get wind knots. They are unavoidable but, you can limit them with good timing casts. I by no means am a perfect caster. But after years of fishing with a fly rod I’ve learned to limit the problems. You will also. Good luck man!

Well sure! Just use a different hook (not a jig hook) and tie it without the bead head. Have fun with it! I mean it won’t sink as well without some weight but you could drop a split shot on the front or something. But you could always get some beads. I think I linked to risen fly beads below. Go with their barbless hooks. The other hooks are good quality but not like the barbless and the barbless are not much more expensive. The barbless hooks they sell are really really good. As good or better than most other brands.

Oh totally get whatcha asking for, but honestly I just tie this fly to be similar to other flies that might be working type thing. If a pheasant tail is working, I use a brown color dubbing, whatever I’ve got laying around. I don’t really get technical on exact ties with this thing. And that’s the point, just tie it to your needs at the time. It can mimic just about anything. I would say, stick with green dubbing and gold or black bead to mimic a Caddis, brown or tan for a baetus, black for midge, and red for the red annelids. But it doesn’t have to be exact.

@@McFlyAngler I like glass beads on nymphs which allow a lot of interesting color options and just a hint of shine but lets the split shot do the sinking and bouncing off the bottom. Also I find when I weight flies they tend to slip down under rocks and get caught up.

I feel ya, ever fish a jigged fly? The hook point is upright. Also, I use this as my lead fly (like split shot) then drop something light on the back of it. Make sense?

Depends on the manufacturer of the hook and bead. Honesty I’ve had some that a size 3mm is all they work, then others it’s a range from 2.5-3.5. At least I think that’s it. Let me go check in a bit, I’m forgetting the exact.

No they work for regular fly fishing under an indicator also. There are other nymphs probably more heavy than these, but they are heavy. I usually fish quite well with these on a 4wt or better. Something a bit more stiff, as a limp noodle won’t be casting these well. However when nymphing, I rarely “cast”. It’s mostly roll casts and shoulder casts.

Yes my hands are wrinkly, comes from years in the sun. Now I’ve had skin cancer so make sure and cover up when out in the sun. Or you will become an old and wrinkly looking cancer survivor in your mid 30’s like me.
