The Franks of the world make life just a little bit better, he's the salt of the earth. I like how the silage program is shaping up. I suspect in the near future a whole new generation of farmers are going to "rediscover" this method of processing and storing winter fodder. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Keep them boys busy and thanks for sharing.

I love watching how well the boys work as a team to accomplish the job. I recently had a stacking party with my kids getting firewood ready for winter. They do pretty good but only for about 30 minutes. I am trying to teach them about how all of us working as a team makes us a strong family and helps us to accomplish goals easier. They are still young but are starting to grasp the concept better. We have one more cord to stack before the snow flies.

I helped a guy with silage in the 1970s in Jonesboro Tennessee. He bulldozed out a place about 16 to 20 feet wide and about 30 feet long. He poured concrete in the bottom. I had to wait until he got two or three loads dumped in the hole. Then, I used the blade on back of the tractor to pull the silage out and keep running over it to pack it. He put enough silage in the hole to bring it about 4 or 5 feet above the ground. Then he covered it with black plastic.

I really enjoyed watching you guys make silage ! I would be afraid that it would compost down . Can't you spray molasses on there as well ? I been thinking about trying to make silage next year and a friend shared this video with me. I'm in TN too. I have a few questions: Do you have a tarp on the bottom of your pile? How mature does the corn need to be for silage? Can I use other stuff like wheat, oats, broad beans and sunflowers? In addition to silage do you have to also feed hay? Any other need to knows for a novice homesteader? Thanks a bunch!
@McGieHomesteadAdventures2 жыл бұрын
Awesome! So great to meet you! First of all you can make silage with lots of things, but I think corn is the easiest because the ears get the fermentation started. I’ve never done anything else, so I’m not a good resource of knowledge there. The corn needs to be in the late dough stage for the best yield and results.. last year I never fed hay with the silage, but there was grass all through the winter. On really bad days when it was ice storms I put grain based feed on the silage so they would get enough energy to stay warm. We never had a cold or sick cow.
