As a beginner, on tenor saxophone, 7 months in, and 72 years of age having previously been a jazz drummer, this is enlightening, very interesting and informative. Thank you.

My fun key hack is to hold all the keys down for low or middle D then lift my first and second finger left hand to trill from D to C#

So, one of the songs I enjoy playing is Summertime. On tenor sax, there is a D to C# note transition. I could never play it smoothly enough until you shared this hack. Thank you!

Is just brilliant trick with c#. Is a bit heavy to keep it press all the time and requires me to adjust wrist as I play an old (beautiful) Yani T880. Many thanks again Joel

Make sure you are not using left hand to carry weigh of the horn! Strap & right thumb for stability. Left hand should be free with no tension!!!
@JoelPurnell
@JoelPurnell 7 ай бұрын
Thanks! Try experimenting with slight adjustments to you hand position, making as much surface area contact with the key as you can, and keeping a loose, relaxed wrist. Also, you can release it when not required, particularly in left hand fingerings where it can feel a little more awkward. Best wishes. Joel. 👍🏼

Very interesting lesson. Thanks. A bit of a non-sequitor (but to me important) question. You are not using a neck strap at all in this video. How are you supporting the Tenor? I have a bad back and however you are doing it might potentially help.
@JoelPurnell
@JoelPurnell 7 ай бұрын
Thanks! The support is something I designed myself with an engineer friend many years ago after a back injury. Unfortunately it’s very bespoke to my horn and not easily replicable, otherwise I’d be a millionaire by now!! Best wishes. Joel. 👍🏼
