Carl Ballantine did his failing spoof magic act all through his life and career. His magic was an inspiration to many magicians around the world. And yes, he did do some magic tricks in various episodes of McHale's Navy. He also was a member of the S.A.M. Society of American Magicians and the International Brotherhood of Magicians.

He snuck a lot of Yiddish slang into the scripts, the producers loved it, then had Fuji using the terms too. He was hilarious on Car 54, stole every scene he was in. Many experts consider the 2nd season of Car 54 to be one of the greatest seasons in sitcom history, the writing brilliant, the cast even better.

I was always impressed by the character development like Seaman Bell, whose nickname was "Tinkerbell", shortened even further to "Tink". I think little things like that really make a show.
@jerseymike79463 күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing, Tvcrazyman. You might want to update this once you have seen Borgnine's Oscar winning turn in the great film "Marty", a classic. You will then recognize when Conway and Ernie do a take off on it, saying to each other repeatedly - "what do you wanna do?" "I don't know, what do you wanna do?". Also, there must be at least 6 or 7 times when Flynn throws in unscripted asides regarding Borgnine's Oscar win, usually right before a scene ends, such as - "McHale, now that performance will get you that Oscar." The PT 73, not the wooden scaled down mock up but the one shown in the opening credits, is actually a customized British Motor Torpedo Boat or MTB. Patrick Macnee of The Avengers fame was skipper of one during the war.

You are correct about the reason why Ernest did not appear in the movie sequel to McHale's navy. Another reason according to Ernest is that the director Edward Montagne refused to show him the script and wanted to make the film cheaply.

Universal made the color movie of The Munsters after it was canceled, they figured it would introduce European audiences to the Munsters rerun package it was about to sell to European TV networks. The 2nd McHales Navy movie was made for the same reason, if you notice much of both was recycled material, they look like they cost about the same as what 4 TV episodes would run.

About the aircraft in the 1964 color movie, the blue-grey aircraft seen at first was a Douglas SBD Dauntless naval dive-bomber. The aircraft seen spinning toward the ground after being fired upon by Ens. Parker, sporting a blue fuselage and yellow wings, was a Consolidated-Vultee BT13 trainer aircraft (lovingly nicknamed the "Vultee Vibrator").
