From a listener perspective, MixA sounds like a tight band (like a record) ..not perfect, but it sounds like a group. MixB sounds like a rehearsal of guys who never played together. Their tones don’t blend. High contrast. It’s a lot of work to try to make digital gel as one (pure hell sometimes), vs how it “just does” by default with tape. Two very different ways to hear music Great example of what I’ve been trying to explain for 15 years. Love this channel 🎉

Thanks for your input I feel the same way. Additionally when it comes to mixing. If I record to tape I find myself not using as much compression or eq as the tracks are already that much closer to the sound I’m going for. I don’t always track to tape but when I do I really notice how much simpler it is, and how well things just seem to fit together and feel right. Thank you.

I'd be completely happy with either because they both sounded dope.
@RiotHomeRecording Жыл бұрын
Yes they both sound good. Plus if I used my hardware gear on the tracks they would be much better.

Tape Compression... That's the key!
@RiotHomeRecording Жыл бұрын
It definitely adds natural compression and eq and has more separation between the tracks and sounds more cohesive at the same time. Thank you!

Shocking how much better mix A (tape) sounded. Mix B sounded very 2D and boring in comparison. Great video dude!

I would recommend A/B ing during the mix. Studies have shown that critical auditory memory is only about 3 to 4 seconds long.
@jaredmann3452 Жыл бұрын
A is way more harmonically complex by a long shot. Is my ear getting led away because of how much more compressed or loud A is than B or is A the tape take?

Hello really love your channel. I am fairly new to recording and mixing with analog gear and really dig it and it so awesome seeing all your cool gear and how you use it. I have a question for you about your Allen Smart C2 I recently got one and I notice that you have the side chain buttons lit up and was wondering what you are using with the side chain? I have seen the cables that they make and am very interested in how others are working with the side chain. Also curious if you are using it in stereo or duel mono on the mix bus? thanks man keep up the good work.

Do you find a difference when tracking a band live to tape, then dumping the tape to protools via the burls? Versus, tracking live through the burls to PT them mixing back through the tape? Or just using stems through the tape or doing a tape stereo mix? Just curious what you're preferred work flow for your desired sound is. Sorry if you've discussed this before, love the videos, tank you fir your efforts.
@RiotHomeRecording Жыл бұрын
I track to tape and transfer to protools or just track to protools. I don’t always track to tape. It depends on the band and what I’m going for. Thank you

I'm a little shocked by this, on my cheap headphones, it seems that Mix B, which is the digital mix, there seems to be more low end punch.
@ReelX1 Жыл бұрын
A version simply has more power, mo beef to it.
@SeemoreDunkan Жыл бұрын
So A is Burl and B is tape?

Do you use the BAD4 or BAD8? @@RiotHomeRecording
@malcolmpalm Жыл бұрын
My guess was correct. Mix A the drums sounded fatter and rounder.
@RiotHomeRecording Жыл бұрын
Good ear, it does have a fuller rounder sound.

hmm B sounds more 3d i prefer B :)

Yes the console definitely adds dimension to the digital tracks.

@@RiotHomeRecording hi listened again and there are differences about the levels so its hard to say exacly which one is better .. the guitars seems more crispy at analog version but this can be caused via volume too hard stuff :)
@RiotHomeRecording Жыл бұрын
@@MaxiMovier nothing was touched level wise. The only difference is what it’s recorded on. I hear the Mix A sounds like everything just gels together that much better. If you feel Mix B is louder adjust your volume. Then compare. I hear pretty big differences between the 2 and it’s not a level thing. It’s a musical thing.
@MaxiMovier Жыл бұрын
@@RiotHomeRecording i hear as A is louder, more topend generally. The B have something less glued at the lowend area but its noticeably less crispy at the top end. This crispiness is at Mix A.

a is better on my phone
@saintjames7387 Жыл бұрын
this is a lie. Your results are faulty. mix A was actually the digital mix. Mix B was tape. Nice try tho man! haha. i see what your doing here..
