#McIntosh #HiEnd #CarAudio
Today I show off the McIntosh MC443, a 300W monoblock from the mid 90's. Unlike most car audio amps, this one is rated at 0.005% THD. Who does that? No one else I've seen in car audio, that's who. McIntosh was bought by Clarion in 1990 and started making car audio amps in 1994 up until the early 2000's. The MC443 shown is the non VU meter version, there was also the MC443M which had the famous McIntosh blue VU meters for showing output.
The MC443 is a full-range Class A/B monoblock rated:
300W at 4 ohms, 14.4V, 0.005% THD
500W at 2 ohms, 14.4V, 0.005% THD
"Stable" at 1 ohm, no rating provided
All McIntosh amps incorporate a technology called PowerGuard, which limits distortion to 3% and allows you to push the amp to it's limits without experiencing "clipping". Let's find out how this amp performs on the Amp Dyno and we'll take a deep dive later to show off the details of this amp.

Noooo! Power guard is yo friend! I think the efficiency on this amp was exemplary as most class a/b amps of this era and even some amps I’ve tested recently (you know who you are!) struggle to get out of the 40’s efficiency. Great video as always
@wal

Efficiency was better than the magazine test got using 12.5V of input. More voltage seems to be the answer to these. Manual says they can handle up to 18V also!

The ending is enough to make a grown man cry. This is McIntosh we are talking about. Definitely SQ to the max! Actually enough power for most people. I one of the few that doesn't even like soft clipping. I hate all forms of clipping. Wish that it didn't exist. Even 1% THD is too high for my liking. I guarantee this amp sounds and performs absolutely stellar. Someone get Barevids on the phone!

For what its worth the stability remark is more in line with the amplifier still being stable if the load impedance dips below 2 ohms, say for a ported enclosure at resonance. On the dyno, essentially once in clip the power supply rails are, more or less, directly connected across the 1-ohm test load once the output transistors are driven hard into conduction, so it really stresses things. Same with the Brazilian amplifiers that have no output filter. Each half of the bridge will basically connect the power supply right across the test load at higher duty cycles, so they blow up as well.
@envisionelectronics
@envisionelectronics 3 жыл бұрын
Yes that is what they mean by “stable” at 1 ohm, meaning the amp won’t blow up during transients as the impedance dips into 1 ohm territory. Thank you for bringing clarity to the comment section.

Love it! I had an MC431 100x4 running a pair of McIntosh 6.5" components and a 12" McIntosh sub. It sounded amazing! Unfortunately I had nothing but problems with the amp blowing and going into protect. After the 3rd time having to send it in for warranty replacement I returned it for a PPI PC4100. It didn't sound as amazing as the MC431 but I pounded on that amp for years with no issues what so ever.

@@walFor the money I paid for it back then it sure was. For some reason that amp didn't like pushing a sub. I ran it for about 6 months pushing highs only and it was fine. I down sized from a PPI PC2350 and put a single 12” back on the McIntosh and it popped again. I'd had enough at that point. I still haven't been able to recreate that McIntosh sound till this day.

I looked into buying a McIntosh car amp. The one I was looking at cost $1800.00 at the time. The BIG amp was $3700.00 at the time. That amp was huge duel meters and WT. was 50 pounds for that car amp. I decided to go with the JLAUDIO Slash A B 5 channel amp instead when that amp first came out for $850.00 at the time. JLAUDIO made high quality amps.i still have that amp with no regrets buying it. I still think JLAUDIO makes high quality car audio gear, speakers and amps.

Considering the price range and how much power it puts out and the low distortion, I would say that this is the type of amplifier that once to buy, you keep forever. On the other hand, I wonder why it blew; if it was the transistors or a not so good power supply.

The Distortion rating reminds me of my first Pioneer receiver that I purchased during the receiver Wars back in the 70s. It was the pioneer RX 1080. 120 watts RMS. And I remember the Distortion rating being super low .000 G-D only remembers. In the meanwhile I still have it it's an amazing piece of equipment. I opened it up to find that the power supply was this big black cylinder shaped Supply. It had actual real wood on the sides. I believe the weight on it was approximately 60 Lbs. Crystal clear sound, had crossover adjustments on the outside, different filter points. And I was capable of removing two pins out of the back where I was able to use it as a preamp only on a Carver amplifier that I picked up a few years later. The Carver was rated at 500 watts RMS. Needless to say when I didn't know any better I blew many speakers back in the day. Getting off brand garbage that was recommended to me. Just thought I would share after seeing that McIntosh Distortion rating. Brought back memories. I am adding to this post right now as I just looked it up on the internet just for a joke they said that the suggested retail price was $700 at the time and I see they have them on eBay reconditioned some guy is asking $5,500 for it. Also it is the SX1080 not the RX. No such animal guess my eyes are not what they used to be. Being that there was not such a demand where I purchased mine. I purchased it in Brooklyn New York from a place called crazy Eddie's. I specifically remember driving the sales person crazy and getting it for just under $500. I had no idea what I was getting at the time. A classic that will last forever.🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I’ve been running the MC443 1ohm for 27 years with PG off. Never been rebuilt. Only problem I’ve found is current draw through 8g fusing blocks can be an issue due to heat for 8g fusing. I had to parallel two circuits to handle the draw. This amp needed 4g wiring input. Otherwise bullet proof!! Great test info!!

The .005% THD is why I paid $1100 for my MC431 back in 1999. 4 channel x 100 watts. It sat in the dealer's shelf for many years because nobody was willing to pay that kind of money. I used that monster amp to run my front and rear mid's and high's. The sound quality back then was breathtaking. The only thing I hated about it was that it was so huge. There was no place you could really hide it, so you were forced to showcase it. That ending had me CRINGING HARD!!!!

ouch, i know that hurt but thank you for the video anyway, i appreciated it more then you can know, I acquired a couple McIntosh amps a few years back but they disappeared before i had a chance to play with them. As crazy as it sounds, for years every time i've watch an amp video it always made me think about those Mac amps and wondered what I missed, I don't think the Mac's could run with the Nak's i ran back in the day but what i saw was still pretty impressive for an a/b'er, that is until you blew it up....lol. You know, you had a good video ending before that happened, you could have just cut that part off and no one would have been the wiser.....

I had the pleasure of owning 1 of the MC406M back in the early 90’s. Iused it all the way through the early 2000’s. Changed up to now owning 1 each of the MCC406M and a MCC301M. They so far are still running strong with my current set up. I love the McIntosh amplifiers. I just wish Mac would get back into the car Audio business.

I’m a hybrid viewer version 3.1. I always appreciate the videos but I always want the best bang for my buck. It’s Weird I really got into car audio in high school like most of us did and that’s when these amps were being made and honestly I never herd of them until last year or so and I find it so strange like some reverse Mandela effect. Good video as always Big D! Thanks

Love Mac amps and have had many. Super clean and very "warm" sound signature. I always wondered just how much more they made over rated at a slightly higher distortion.

I am Viewer Number 3 first and foremost as I hope we all are! But I am also alittle bit of 2. The best thing you could try to do to satiate us is trying to get Barevids back to talk about what he understands of the architecture and some of the design choices it seems the engineers made to pursue the sound quality we know they were after. I haven't watched past 1:54 yet but I know 2 things: these amps sound really good, and they don't test all the way to their SQ related specs.
