Service in Spain is not worse, is just different than wjat you guys expect. I'm not from Europe and it seemed perfectly pleasant to me. From what I could see from Americans, the issue is that they expected the waitstaff to be at their beck and call and sort of predict what they want and offer stuff. If they have to ask for things and wait a bit, it's bad service. I've seen comments of people complaining they had to ask for the bill. That's baffling to me. If someone just brought the bill without me asking I would consider it really rude, like they-'re kicking me out. Or coming to the table to ask what I want without me calling for them first, it would feel like they are rushing me. Just leave the menu and leave, I'll call you when I want to order.

Because americans, for some reason, expect that the rest of the world has the same habits. It's like if the difference between countries were just food, climate, outfits, etc. In the USA waiters and waitress are always asking clients if everything is ok and are always iverly nice, otherwise, they work for free because it's not their boss who pays them; the clients do, so they need those tips. Of course I'm not saying that waiters and waitresses wouldn't be nice if their boss paid their salary as they should, but they need to please the clients a lot because of that. On the other hand, in the USA, people go eat just to eat and they have 1 hour to eat and that's why they bring the bill without asking clients. People can't enjoy a meal there because they have kicked out if they eat calmly!

Retired lady came to Spain 24 years ago. I have been so happy here. There is such respect for seniors. I have lived in the provinces of Barcelona, Málaga and now Valencia is my home town. It's very beautiful. Lots of Americans living here. In my experience many Spanish in the hospitality industry speak some or a lot of English. it would be nice if some tourists learned at least a couple of Spanish words. Disfruta españa 🇪🇦

I should point out several things.1.- Spanish people are friendly and outgoing not because the tourism but just because we are this way everywhere, even when we are abroad. 2.- If someone doesn´t speak English it doesn´t mean that person lacks a second language because there are many other languages. My mother speaks three languages but not English and my son speaks five (English, French, Catalonian, Russian and Spanish). Perhaps the ones who lack a second language are most English speaking tourits. 3.- Mañana doesn´t mean later in Sapin unless you are talking to a "hispanoamericano". 4.- Avoid foreign Spain´s experts, even those who try to teach us Spanish people about our own country just because they have been living here for a couple of years. These Wolter’s World videos are pretty dreadful. We go to Spain two or three times a year, and have never experienced poor service in a restaurant or mistakenly ordered the catch of the day and been charged €100. As with visiting any country, you get far more out of it if you can speak the language. I think the favourite place we have visited is Jerez where reassuringly few people seem to speak English.

14:34 The service in restaurants in Europe isn't worse than in the US. It's just that customers have different priorities and the restaurants adapt to these priorities. USA: To cutsomers, lunch is an interruption of their (work) day. so they want it to be over quickly => customers value fast service. Europe: Customers want to enjoy the experience, talk to friends, etc. => they want the experience to last longer and DON'T want the service to be particularly fast. (In particular, they resent getting asked what else they want all the time by staff).

Spaniards are nice because they're nice, not because they need to suck up to tourists or something lol It's also important to mention that bullfighting is opposed by probably the majority of the population and it is totally illegal in some regions, like Catalonia and the Canary Islands. Let's not normalise it as a "cultural thing" because many Spaniards are completely opposed to it. The menu thing in restaurants is BS. Yes, many places have that option (like basically in most of Europe) but it's obviously not mandated by any law. Idk where he got that from. Also that singing thing... yeah no comments on that.

Well you're wrong... If there is a law from the 60s (when Fraga was minister of tourism under the Franco regime) It requires that every restaurant place a Menu of the Day with an affordable price in a visible place. This law is still in force and if you walk down any street you will see in the restaurants, next to the price menu, a Menu of the Day and its fixed price.

I have lived in Spain for eleven years. I have a cave house in Granada. The supermarket is open all day. Other shops are closed for siesta. The bars and eating places are open. Actually in my village you get free tapas if you order a beer or wine. It's very rural with locally grown produce. You have to speak Spanish to integrate into their culture.

It’s not an *anything* language, as in it relates to no other known language. It’s suspected that it is the last remaining language of the group that existed in Europe before the Indo-Europeans arrived 6000 to 3000 years ago, which is pretty amazing by itself. 14:58 I think he doesn't understand that paying for grams when it comes to meat or fish is perfectly normal here, it's not a scam for tourists. It's done that way so you don't pay the same price for different amounts of food. It's like when you go to the market to buy food. They tell you the price of different products depending on how much of it you buy, measured by weight (a kilo of x is y). Same thing in restaurants, they give you the price of usually 100 grams of that specific meat or that specific fish, and the price of the final dish varies a little depending on how much meat or fish you get (because even though it is roughly the same, sometimes the size of the piece is a bit bigger or smaller). Customers have an idea of what the dish will cost based on what 100 grams of that meat or fish costs, and what the price actually is will be a little over or a little under what they were thinking, but not by much.

Toilet is also lavabo. The majority of people speak english. People don't do the siesta, the do a break for lunch in small shop were is only one or two workers. This mañana phrase is a english phrase, we work a lot. This flag is the valencian flag, derivates from the aragon kingdom. Derivates from the coat of arms of Barcelona Count who married the princess of aragon and created the kingdom of aragon. The flag is very old and there're legends around it. The "siesta" moment is the other way around, Bussiness are closed because nobody wants to go at shops at that time. You are full of food, since lunch is the main meal in Spain so you just want to relax, spend time talking with family in "sobremesa" and children and elderly people tend to sleep a little bit. Of course not all people can do that, but the mojirity can do this so why are you get your shop open when the rest of the people are chilling after lunch... also in summer it's almost impossible to get out of your house at that time it's soooo hot.

That the economy depends on tourism is a bit of a stretch that people on these videos like to say (perhaps to belittle or just honestly misinformed). Granted a 11% of the economy is not to laugh at but it is still a 11% not like Spain will be finished without tourism. Edit: About the mid day break. Except on malls it is quite a thing. And the profitability thing? Opening, except on tourist areas (which are indeed open) it makes no economical sense. Regarding being late, ofc if it's something formal or an event you don't want to be late, actually you probably want to be early. For example I went to see a musical at the theater the other day, it started at 4:30pm, doors open at 4pm, we were already there at 3:15pm haha But if it's meeting with friends, up to 15min late it's acceptable, 30min.. kinda sucks but it could happen, 1h late you better have a really good excuse or it'd be just rude. English woman here. There is no problem if you do not speak Spanish. All hotels and shops speak Spanish. Not so when you go to Madrid and other cities but it is not a problem. I have been going to Spain since the 1970's . I absolutely adore Spain. A lot of English people retire there. The food is very good and Spain has a wonderful climate. It is dry and not humid.

to sum up: If you want a Castilian, hispacnisphere experience go to Madrid. It's full of people around Spanish ex colonies, such as Cuba, Argentina, Mexico, etc. If you want a Celtic Spanish experience go to the green hills of Galicia and embrace the Galician culture. If you want an international, more European experience and a city that look like a studio Ghibli city go to Barcelona is just 3 hours away of Paris and Milan, and all the Mediterranean ferries stopped there, literally Barcelona is the European California: Rosalia, Shakira, Laura Pausini, etc have a house there. If you want a true northern Spanish experience go to the Basque Country. It's full of legends, magic and industry. If you want an Spanish cliché go to Andalucia: Siesta, flamenco, bullfight, sun and beaches everywhere If you want good beaches and party: Balearic Islands (full of British and germans, especially Mallorca and Ibiza) If you want volcanic beaches, Camels and deserts go to the Canary Islands.

After some years' study I can now read Spanish reasonably. However, listening to spoken Spanish is a different matter. They speak so fast! (This has been measured. They really do speak faster than most other languages.) Basque is indeed not a Romance language, but it is not even an Indo-European language, unlike the vast majority of other European languages. Its structure is totally different, and the numbers are totally different. It really annoys me when people snipe at the Spanish for taking a siesta. It's the sensible thing to do in the climate! It can get so hot.

The guy whose video your're reacting to doesn't have a clue or he thinks you don't have a clue. It's a little annoying. We call this sort of bloke "guiri", and that's not good. Siesta is mostly a myth. Guiris use to think our long working time schedule which includes a pause is "siesta". You're not going to loose that much money when you close 14:00 to 16:00 because your customers are mostly local and they know this time schedule and live under it. Shops and offices often open at 8:00 or 9:00 and close at 20:00 or later. Tourism is an important industry on some parts of the country, but isn't our main source of income at all. Small to medium business are. Yes, excessive tourism is one of the main reasons of the housing crisis we suffer because of AirBnb and the like (tourism rental) and that annoys most of us very, very much. Of course, if you visit a foreign country it's always a good idea having a grasp of the local language (and local currency, which americans often forget). No matter which foreign country you go to. Lunch menu for the day is usually very, very visible. Just watch and read. And run from too clearly tourist oriented business. Your stay will be cheaper and more interesting. Never drink Cruzcampo (it's a running joke). Stay clear of bulls. Always. And, as far as I can remember, the only flag with purple in it was our republican flag which changed after the Civil War. Other than that, your remarks are just spot-on. It's a pitty you wouldn't be a typical "guiri". You know too much.

Walter is spouse to be experience but he has some weird things in his videos. 1. Stop with the Siesta. Yes. It is normal to close shops in the middle of the day and proper restaurant will open for lunch and dinner but this is the nor, in many places in Europe and other parts of the world. Fast food places and in Spain bars (that are a type of restaurant usually stay open all day. Today local neighborhood stors will close at 14:00 and open at 17:00 but large stores, chain stors, shopping centers and supermarkets aare open. Besids, you can't manage a few hours without been able to buy something? As others said, service is good, but different. No one will constantly bother you, ask if everything is ok or stop everything because you asked for something. They also never presure you tomoay and leave. If you are in a hurry you can (in most places) to go to the person near the cash register with your bill and pay. As for time, yes we are leas stressed about time but we certainly set a specific time if needed but, depending on the circumstances people will arrive a bit later, in fact when you're invited somewhere it's expected that you'll arrive a bit kater, and definitely not before (which is roud). For languages, there are planty of Spaniards that speek English but the factvthat he said "don't speek a second language" is condescending and not true as, with all due respect, a second language does not have to be English. It's true that compare to othe European countries the number of bilinguals in Spain is low only at around 50% but it's an absurd claim coming from an American. A few of the points are experiences only tourists have.

I think nowadays, or at least the millenials and younger generations, are fluent in English. Specially in cities. In places like Barcelona most natives are trillingual (since they also speak catalan) and I think that's kinda consistent in other cities and regions that have their local language besides spanish.

Working hours at offices are usually 9:00 to 18:30 with 1 hour for lunch, usually from 14:00 to 15:00. Lunch time is unpaid obviously. Some businesses completely stop activity for lunch, others don't and employees have 2 shifts for lunch. But there's NO SIESTA at work at all. However, shops open to the public work a split shift: open at 10:00 and then close from 13:30 to 17:00 for their employees to go home for lunch. Workers could have a small rest then if they feel so. Then they have to work a second shift from 17:00 to 20:30 to complete the normal 7 hours work time. The 5 remaining hours up to 40 are for Saturdays. Retail business is more demanding because it's open 6 days a week.

Respect their cultures. A young guy in a bar near me speaks five languages. I have renovated many houses in various parts of Spain and mañana in my experience wasn’t part of their day. After 24 years of living here I couldn’t be happier.

The east coast of Spain is a mess right now. There have been fast floods (a phenomenon called DANA) and Valencia is now full of mud. More than 200 deaths and the gobernment has made an absolute sht of management. Connor, you're correct about the Basque language (euskara), not being an Indo-European language. Indo-European languages only arrived in Europe about 5000 years ago. There are clues in the language about how old it is, for example I have read or heard that the word for knife in Basque literally means "the stone that cuts". I can't be certain of the accuracy of that.

Not only that. The fact that the Basque language has no F's is another sign of how old it is. Languages without F or V sound tell you they probably originated when humans had a different jaw structure and teeth were aligned up and down instead of modern humans where upper teeth are a bit ahead. That makes the F sound to appear naturally when previously it would be difficult therefore they didn't have that sound

18:30: Basque is a REALLY ancient language. Almost all European languages are from the Indo-European language family. The Indo-Europeans came to Europe around 5,000 (!) years ago and supplanted the original European civilizations - but the Basque people were already there. They are one of these original civilizations which somehow survivied the Indo-European influx in there little corner of the continent.

Ah, he’s not exactly correct Spanish don’t like the Brits, who get severely drunk and think that people are deaf, so take to screaming at them in English When I went, the first day thought me that A they had no idea of what nationality I was…. That happens in my own country to The moment I spoke English I was automatically sent to the back of the line, ignored So next day, spoke Zulu 😁 That caught them, they tried a couple of other languages and we eventually settled on English, a lot do get by with English, they choose not to speak it. Places and schools start around 09:00, closed between 2 until mostly 4, parents pick their kids up, go home buy fresh items on their way home Streets start filling up again between 16:15 and 17:00, shops open and close at 22:00-23:00 But hotels have small bars and you can ge a light meal or coffee Most eateries have free fresh olive, they are amazing The Spain he experienced was very different to mine,just saying
