The only reason the US is "obsessed" with pick-ups is fuel is cheap enough to afford the running costs. If ANYTHING happens and fuel prices surge in the US you won't be able to give them away because most people buy what they can afford to run and maintain. Double or triple the fuel price and 4 cylinder cars, hatchbacks, hydrids etc will be the cars of choice...it's happened before and will happen again in the future.

Feeling safe in a truck is strange. Your regulators decided Cars need to have a certain level of efficiency. They also regulate on a certain level of safety. Both are higher than in trucks. The boundary between a car and a truck was based on footprint and weight and the ratio between them. Regulators tried to bring pickup trucks back into the car standards, but manufacturers prefer not to have the efficiency and safety regulations apply to their products, so tweak them to stay outside the car definition. That's why your trucks are getting bigger. Basically your manufacturers found a way to avoid regulations, which would improve the product for the consumer and convince the public that's what they wanted. I think it doesn't work so well in UK and EU because the regulators will adjust the definitions of car/truck. It happened in UK when we started to get pickup trucks with 2 lines of seats, these were initially thought of as 'vans' (work vehicles, thus not subject to certain Taxes) those tax rules were adjusted, pretty much immediate effect.

The popularity of trucks in the US has more to do with the taxes and standards imposed on them vs normal vehicles. They get a tax break cos they are commercial vehicles, not passenger vehicles. Also, they are less popular because vans.. carry the same load but have it secured and protected from weather or theft all the time rather than having a cover or topper that you have to pay extra for and cuts your carry capacity. Generally something the size of a 2500 or 3500 will be based on a light truck chassis cab-over style and have a tipping bed &/or gated sides all round and used for gardeners or road crews or other lighter construction needs. The biggest use for a pickup is either on sites or farms but even then we generally prefer SUV(in this case even a defender with an enclosed body is an suv) vs pickup. That said, it isn't super rare to see pickups here but the largest is the size of a ford ranger(raptor) / toyota tacoma vs an f150/250/350 etc Artic trucks are about as big as you see (mildly modded lifted on 35"tyres of production pickups)

Pick up trucks and SUV might feel safer, but most of them actually are not, as they have to pass way less safety regulations. And that's only speaking about the safety of the people driving them. If you take in consideration the other people on the road, other car drivers, pedestrians, motorcycle riders, bicycle riders, wheelchair users etc, they can very well be called lethal weapons.

The size of the engine, the load of the car, the price range of the car, the fuel consumption, etc. all that affects the price of cars in Europe. Roads in Europe are much tighter. We have roads with only one lane but with two ways. Parking space isn't infinite. Our car parks are built vertically (underground parking and above ground parking), not horizontally. It's not possible to have that much weight stacked and many floors would be necessary. You'll see that the best car brands, watches, planes, perfume, clothing is from Europe. The only real influence USA has in Europe is the fastfood industry (McDonald's & Burguer King - the most popular), juices and sodas ("Coca-Cola"/Coke), movies and songs. When it comes to real life, the food, health care, fashion and mobility, USA does nothing. Using a pickup truck to leave outside while it's raining will only get the trunk full of water. In the USA people use huge cars to drive alone. In other countries the cars are small but they will be carrying more than 2 people.

Like ANY commodity, be it grain, oil or otherwise, it doesn't matter if your country produces more than anyone else, simply by being connected to international markets means an international price hike means local price hike too. The trade prices are set internationally and affect local markets as much as external markets, less transport costs and tariffs/taxes.

Most important reason from my point of view is, that US regulations don't allow you to tow a trailer with a car, like a Volkswagen Golf for example. You want to tow a trailer, than you'll need a truck in the US. If you own a house, you will need to tow a trailer pretty regularly, so most families in the US will need a truck. At least one, second car could possibly be a small car. European regulations are very different in this area. Here you can tow small trailers with your small cars. So most house owners don't need a large vehicle to begin with.

I never understood why on earth you would buy a car like that? If you like to move things, you buy a van. If you like to go from point a to point b, you just buy a stationwagon or a sedan. It’s probably the reason why you hardly see pickup trucks in Europe.

This is a thing for farmers for example. If you quickly want to move some straw, hay, whatever, you don't want to put it in your van. You simply lift it onto your loading area of your truck. It heavily depends on the kind of freight, that you're dealing with most of the time. Not everybody does carry sensible and bulky stuff, that can go into a van. Some people carry stuff more often, that you don't want to put into your van - due to their smell, making things dirty or because it's just impractical to load and unload it. Weather, like rain, isn't an issue for every possible thing you want to transport.

This is a vast simplification. The model T was duel fuel, apple jack(alcohol), and gasoline , Rockefeller paid the temperance movement 4 million dollars to ban alcohol clearing the field for gasoline. Another major point is that big oil companies have controlled the market (it's called a cartel). The USA has, compared to most major industrialized countries, enjoyed relatively cheap gas prices, which has made for gas guzzling vehicles and, in turn,higher priced fuel forced other countries to produce move fuel efficient vehicles , which has lead to a decline in sales of these vehicles outside of the north American continent. It's a vast subject brush over by this video.

Here in Europe they are more an EGO issue than that they can actually transport something that also easily fits in a van. In addition, they are also too big for parking spaces and instead of a 6 or 8 cylinder we can easily do with a 4 or 5 cylinder which also saves on consumption since the petrol/diesel prices are twice as expensive as in the USA. So all in all a useless vehicle here. It is more an EGO object here and you often see that in the drivers here who drive around with it. And you drive electric cars at the fair and not on the roads.

Pickups sold in the US are just enlarged pickups sold elsewhere. They're too big too expensive and useless for work. They look like big cars for show. Mercedes, Renault, Fiat/Iveco make smaller work vehicles on their van chassis which are actually small trucks

It is crazy to use up your oil domestic oil reserves, and not save it and use other countries oil when it’s available. When your oil reserves runs low you get the country’s head in a noose. A lot of countries are leaving their own oil in the ground and are using other countries oil.

Large vehicles are necessary for large families if they travel together. I do not know how many tons they weigh but it is ridiculous to use them for getting the weight of 1 normal person from one place to another. The amount of fuel they use is ridiculous. Number 1 reason why we don't like trucks in Europe. They are too big for our roads. Plus they have no decent fuel mileage. Anything under 65 mpg is considered as useless. Cost of fuel in Europe is per litre. Not per gallon. And it isn't cheap.

Hi Jib. What's happened to your hair? - you look different! Anyway, your other respondents have put your straight - trucks are wide, so they only can use major roads. Therefore only commercial drivers will obviously be enthusiastic about trucks. In videos past, I've told you about city centres (both in Britain and Europe) where even normal car drivers have to pull in their wing mirrors to navigate along lanes (narrow roads). How then could they possibly manage with a truck ?? Well, the answer is - if you have some kind of a truck, you'll be leaving it in an out-of-town carpark and taking a shuttle in. The Europeans are even further developed with many entire centres given over exclusively to pedestrian precincts.

The fuel efficiency regulations were introduced, then the US car maker lobbied the government to circumvent the rules by having it averaged out over the total car vehical sales. So you can have fuel gusslers that are offset by the more efficient vehicles. It is a case of not spending money on development of better engines. The engines overseas became more reliable than engines they replaced, because they were better engineered. But manufactured US engine reliability got worse. Never buy a US manufactured vehicle of any type or brand, they are trash.

Jacking up the truck prices even higher… “Market adjustments” year after year. Why? Because they have been getting away with it. I will not buy your overpriced trucks anymore. You have lost my sale and I hope someone at Ford reads this. Even with the sales on trucks being 10-15% off right now they are still not worth buying and knowing you are pillaging consumers even harder next year. Better off putting my money into investments than losing 50k to depreciation because I will never be able to sell a 100k truck like Ford does. Nearly doubling the price of trucks in such a short period of time is a complete disgrace and a slap in the face to consumers ready to buy your product. Peace out.
