as depressing as this is I love the vids you post in pittsburgh. Im from there. I grew up in Beltzhoover, but have lived all over the south hills. Im not in Washington state, and im homesick- even for the bad...though this is actully looking nicer than the last time i was physically there/ Lot of buildings cleared out instead of being eyesores/trap houses. This is actually...progress fot this area

My hometown 1210 Maple Street. Across from Versailles Avenue Cemetery. Live there in the 70s and 80s. It was such a great place to grow up back then.

That’s crazy because I also used to live in 1210 maple street

I didn't live at that address, but I know the area. I moved away after graduating from MASH in 1974.

Both Chester PA and Camden NJ are like this with a lot of abandonment and severe urban decay.

Being from McKeesport I can give you intimate details on what caused its demise and what specifically prompted us to move out to Elizabeth Township for our safety.

My goodness!! An entire neighborhood, abandoned?? That's an opportunity right there. Find a commercial building, build it out, create jobs, hopefully a real estate investor comes in, rehab those homes, you can go from hood to thriving neighborhood
@Kammithekiller2 жыл бұрын
if only it were that easy. some of these neighborhoods have no infrastructure, no easy access to amenities, ad no public interest. Im from beltzhoover in pittsburgh and some of that was attempted- the new buildings just...went unsold and rotted. There needs to be a long re-dev, staring with better public transport, parks, schools, THEN whatever else. Also a ton of our schoold shut down about 10 years ago so more and more neighborhoods just...died
@IngaHicks2 жыл бұрын
@@Kammithekiller that's awful. But if there are homes there, there had to be infrastructure there, houses need plumbing, streets need drain off, electricity, phone lines, I'm positive there's basic infrastructure, but yeah, re-dev is a must to bring it up to date. It's still an opportunity and it can be done. It may not be easy, but many things worthwhile are not easy, it just requires determination, effort, support and of course, money
@Kammithekiller2 жыл бұрын
@@IngaHicks that really is it. money to update water/sewage to allow for commercial areas, and sschools...and a heckin library and parks. iirc this isnt pittsburgh 'city' so funding is the biggest problem

Most of these abandoned houses are too deteriorated to rehabilitate. The only viable solution is demolition and clearance.

I remember crossing the Mansfield Bridge and seeing the river under the holes and exposed rebar under my feet. McKeesport has bridges everywhere that will need rebuilding. The streets have potholes and sinkholes. The drinking water is contaminated with giardiasis. Let's not forget about the underground hotspots of methane and other explosive gases. It is amazing that McKeesport hasn't become another Centralia, Pennsylvania.

This town is even more advanced than Amsterdam NY in its decrepitation and decay. Worse, it has a lot of what appears to be abandoned renovations. Did they run out of money, or did they run out of hope due to the neighborhood "trouble"?

As sad as his looks, you should have seen McKeesport in 1962 when that little town was humming with the ginormous US Steel monster on the river. We visited my aunt and uncle by way of the Pennsylvania Railroad out of (the real) New York Penn. Thank God they're both dead ... that they don't have to see or live in this abyss.

People who have pride in themselves and pride in their community, wouldn't let this happen. They should feel ashamed of themselves.

That,s what happens when the mills close and there are not any jobs to be had. People move away.

You can tell this was once a really nice place. That abandoned church with the door wide open is crazy.

Wasn't this the place that had an inferno burning under the streets for decades from an abandoned coal mine?
@Kammithekiller2 жыл бұрын
nope, thats centralia pa (aka silent hill
@raycaster4398 Жыл бұрын
Yes. Olympia shopping center used to be an extensive amusement park. But inextinguishable mine fires below forced its closure. There was an old bituminous coal company in McKeesport in the 1830s with underground mines from east end all the way to East McKeesport.
