I'm reminded of a different quote. "...for evil men to accomplish their purpose it is only necessary that good men should do nothing." This was a panel that entertained the idea that a man who couldn't be bothered to staff his government was a latent authoritarian. Meanwhile, REAL authoritarianism around the world has never felt so emboldened - and this show didn't even touch it.

Really? But it implicates that every theist acts moral only because of supervision. And this is as false, as saying that every atheist acts unmoral because of lack of it.
@eliseroeser1408
@eliseroeser1408 6 жыл бұрын
no, they were talking about people who think that atheists are not moral because they don't believe someone is watching them. So the original commentator was saying that is the only reason someone acts morally, is because they afraid of hell, then they don't want to know that person. Because they aren't acting morally because it's the right thing to do. They act morally because they are essentially being threatened.

Bill's best hour of the year by far. John, Fareed, Jim, and Mr Dawkins were very informative, funny, and guests that you can only wish to get every week instead of people trying to out holler each other to make their points. And of course the Putin shot in New Rules getting a hum job from you know who was "classic" Maher; I thought I'd die laughing when that caption came on. I like it so much more when Bill only has two guests every week instead of three at the table

The point of the Bible, as someone who has read it in its entirety, is to have faith. It is one thing to know and memorize what is self-evident, i.e. "thou shall not kill" or the fact that there is a greater force that has brought this world to be; it is much more difficult to put those truths into action in every moment of our lives.

I have worked in healthcare for 16 years, in an area of profession where not only do I care on medical needs of my patients, but I must focus on their dignity and integrity and strongly dignity of life. Im not open with my atheism, nor do I hide it. If someone asks about my religious beliefs, I am open and honest. They seem shocked. "But you are so kind, thorough and empathetic with your patients. You are so wonderful with these people." Of course I am. I have only my own conscious to answer to, not some make believe sky daddy.

Fareed Zakaria, Jon Meacham and Richard Dawkins make for a perfect panel. They bounce off each other very well and are clearly intelligent people. The conversation flows very well and it's truly entertaining listening to them discuss things. Bill's usual panel often shout over each other, or are only aware of niche topic and throw that topic constantly into the mix as the panellist has no other topic mastery - this leads to episodes which you don't pay attention to the discussion much as it's just a shouting match. Lets hope Bill brings these folks back onto his show again :)

The reason you have the volumes you have in the bible was thanks to good ole King James. He ordered an "official" English translated bible for the masses, or else. Most people forget that last clause. This was a rushed job of assembling the books into one volume, just like you see today, under the threat of literally losing one's heads. Politics, as a whole, really hasn't changed that much through the years... LOL

I love unorthodox conversations between people with brainpower to spare for humor. Quite different from a pundit round... Sadly in Bill Maher's comment sections, you find a certain kind of natured people watching that do not come for the content, rather to complain about it. Anyone unable to see Dawkins' work as contributions to society is clearly ignorant of the efforts and results of that line of work. To every religious troll, 'moderate' and people who are just into singing: Have a look at the Theodizee question and Pavlov's theorem when looking at our society, your beliefs and the world's religions. Finish off with Carl Sagan's famous words about the little blue dot and then come backt o this situation.

I'm a lifelong Catholic, so I may disagree philosophically with Richard Dawkins, but I absolutely agree that you shouldn't be a good person just because someone might be watching. In fact, there's a passage in the Bible that's very specific about people who put their "holiness" on display for everyone to see. Basically, it says that those people can fuck right off.

hey Bill Maher your stance on religions is undeniably potent within your viewers, but I just wanted to know your opinion on the Hindu religion and your take on the Bhagavad Gita (technically the Hindu bible)...? From what I understand, Hinduism seems to be the most liberal among most religions. Would love to hear your thoughts/ opinions regarding this religion!

I actually don't agree with their assessment of why religious people don't think atheists have morality...basically, Christians think it's really difficult to always know what the right thing to do is at all times using only a person's own assesment. They think that, in morally blurry situations, the only good guidance you can have is God, and that morality comes from God--not as an overseer, but more as an internalized guide/compass. Long, complicated story short, athiests obviously don't have that, so they can't be moral (but honestly in western countries they're guided by the same mores and norms as everyone else, and those are largely built from Christian tenants of moral teachings).

Dawkins: People don’t need codified sets of ethics. Two minutes later: yea, people were fucking goats. Some people think we don’t need man made rule of law and society thinks they are crazy. Kinda contradicts itself. Just sayin.

You were young Bill, when I was. We were born a more or less a decade after the war, when religons were mild and kindly. The holocaust, in Protestant countries, Catholics went on being very extreme in Catholic countries, meant that Catholics were being very mild when we were children, and that is maybe true of protestant christians I have less contact with, such as of the Evangelists. Our problem today is that religons are getting cruel again, they always have the potential to get over crushing. Religious hatred of Jews, their blackening them, had lead to the Holocaust, which had a sobering effect on christians. Now however, they are becoming hard line again. We have had an, all but Nazis Pope and now have one who supported the Argentinian Generals, the Cardinals are really pushing their luck when they choose Popes and their luck is holding, they can do anything they want, no one will complain, and that is a much bigger problem than the problem of whether or not God exists. At least keep both problems in mind when you talk of religions.and keep in mind the behaviour of hte Magdelene sisters and other such stories, when you defend the Irish. Real Ireland is not a place you would like. My grandmother was Irish too, I used to have a romantic idea about Irland but i no longer do.

Dawkins is portraying Moses as some primitive ancient fool. I can't hep it, but it is Mr. Dawkins who makes himself a fool by serving the audience with emotional arguments that a 13 year old kid would find suspicious. What I find even more strange is that Mr. Maher seems to condone with his warped interpretation of the facts not even bothering to note that the commandment reads: "You shall not murder" and not "You shall not kill" as Dawkins is saying.

A translation of a translation of a translation...yes. For those who want to know more, read "The Manna Machine", a great book in English that attempts to translate the Kabbalah and the Zohar. The Nag Hammadi Library are the missing books. 42 exist today, was once 49.

WHen you think of the bible like you are today, you do what is always done, you forgetting the christian fathers who enormously influence our prelates but hardly at all the main body of the church. Saint Augustine said that if you could stop an ill using violence then it would be a sin not to use violence. That really changes what we know and love of Jesus who was so anti violence. nearly everything Saint Paul says makes me sick, I always felt enthusiastic abotu jesus' teaching but cannot swallow a word of Saint Pauls but our prelates dont feel that way about him. The man on the street does not much study Saint Augustine but the Vatican does. We are the same as Islam is meant to be, we believe in holy war, we believe in Saint Augustine, even if the man on the street does not realise we do. Saint jerome said it was oK to kill heretics, if you apply Saints Augustines reasoning to heresies, then you can understand why you may kill heretics, other religions can be said to be evil, the reasoning would go like this, that other religions can be said to be an evil as they separate people from the true God so that lots of people end up in hell, so then, if we follow Saint Augustine JUst war principal, its OK to kill heretics it is to stop a something bad. Probably the prelates tell men and women in positions of power about Saint Augustine they just dont much talk about it from their pulpits a friend of mine here in Spain explained that the men here don't go into the church till after the sermon because what is said in church is meant for women and children. The Christians are really the ones who have been most warlike, that is why I say, "as Islam is meant to be", they are meant to be warlike but it is us who really are so. People like Saint Augustine, early saints, designed the Credo, as in they said a lot of things that are are included in hhis prayer that don't come from the old testament nor come from Jesus, such as, there was a Trinity, and that saints exist. We have to believe in the trinity, a Commmunity of Saints or that the Virgen was such and was it even after giving birth, etc. We don't realise how much the christian fathers effect us. I never signed on to their ideas knowingly, in an informed way, and you lot are not even mentioning them so it seems i am not the only lay christian to be pretty unaware of how much they have changed our religion. I happily repeated the Credo in Mass when i was young, without wondering about where the ideas in it came from, I was not taught about verbal fights between christian fathers, that lead to settling such ideas as that there are three Gods in one. I was not invited to think about such matters. The ideas of the Inquisition come from Saint Augustines "Just War" ideas and Saint Jerome thought heretics should be killed and poeple believe that the iquisitions ideas are dead but Catholics persecute people like me who are not good christians. That child, Jamie Rodermayer, who hung himself in his bedroom came from a catholic school, as did all the other children but one, who Andersen Cooper featured because they had commited suicide, all their funerals were catholic, all of them were gay but one, a girl who two timed her boyfriend at school. Catholics encourage bullying as a way to influence people and turn them from sinning but it is not something they much mention publically. If you read about the Magdelene Sisters you get an idea of how mean Catholics can be and it is not just the Magdelene sisters their are films of other cahtolic communities being mean such as the film SOng for a raggy boy boy.YOu can see another eexample of their crazyness in, "The Exorcism of Emily Rose." They persecute me, my sister is in the Legion of Christs lay division Regnum Christi. I don't mean they disagree with me, I mean they try to punish me by saying nasty things and by trying to cut me off socially. They use indirect comments so that little can be proved against them but they persecute people for not being strict Catholics. Also their conversion methods are rough, if you read about brain washing then you will learn about their conversion methods and understand why missionaries are banned from going to India.That different christian grops get really nasty to their followers is so much more of an important theme than whether or nto God exists, you should be fighting the increasing carazyness and cruelty of the religions, it is so much more impoartant to keep them healthy than to fight on whether or not God exists. They make large swathes of the population suffer.

Ancient Greek was a verb-based language (like most Indigenous languages today still are, in fact). This means that even things like, say, gender were regarded as verbs rather than solid, stable objects - which makes sense, because gender isn't a thing.

I hate Health Insurance. I do Holistic Health, and do not go to modern doctors. The shity insurance I am forced to buy, is useless to me. My consultations are free already. I am forced to pay for shity insurance I have no need for. I do my own stitches and make my own medicine for me to take. I am 50 and have been free of doctors who were trying to kill me for years. Shity modern medicine and shity Health Insurance.

Really you know gods!!!!!! If you boast about it, that means you do not. The one thing Jesus have always talk about is humility. That is the Christian way. To believe in God means you do not know about God and his ways. You submit and believe in him in his infinity wisdom.
