There is a mis-understanding as of which gear combinations will work. For mtb, an 8 speed through 11 speed Cassette will fit on the sam free hub body while a road free hub body is different between the 11 speed and 8-10 speed cassettes. A road 11 speed is wider than an mtb 11 speed

You might have been able to even keep the old derailleur since the shift lever is what actually controls how much cable is taken in or let out with each shift. You just have to adjust the high and low set screws on the derailleur assuming it's a compatible shimano.

Can someone verify?
@derrickquintal2 жыл бұрын
This is only true if you're using a friction style shift mechanism. The shift spacing for 8,9,10 ect are all slightly different. Yes you can extend the travel of your derailleur, but you won't have smooth shifts into every gear using the wrong shifter.

If you put that huge cassette on... which is way larger than the dork disc behind it, you have to use the XXL dork disc from Shimano. They are currently out of stock, but Shimano will fedex them to you as soon as they are available again. They also offer a special carbon super dork disc, for only U$ 149,- for those of you who want outstanding performance at low weight.

If it's of any help, the Shimano HG Spline driver is a standardised part. Cassettes are designed to fit it and that is why 6/7/8 speed chains are about 7mm wide at the pin but 12 speed chains are about 5.1mm at the pin. The Cassettes are all the same thickness, the rings are slimmer and tighter spaced to allow for more speeds in the same space. Campagnolo have started to produce a 13 speed for roadies. That set up uses a 4.9mm chain to further allow the cassette to fit within a standardised hub space. Shimano micro-spline and SRAM XD drivers are now complicating the market but they still hold the same cassette width, they just make the driver diameter smaller to accommodate a 10t ring, HG spline can only fit an 11t at the smallest. If you're upgrading an older bike the real hang up will likely be the Bottom Bracket. Chuck that square taper, Octalink of ISIS spline in the bin, we're now in the world of SRAM DUB, 24mm and 30mm two-piece cranksets. This is the area which can mess up would be 1x newcomers as a 2x or 3x crankset will not give a good chainline and 10, 11 and 12 speed really need a narrow-wide chainring to work properly. My personal recommendation is pricey but worthwhile for ease and quality. Buy a SRAM NX Eagle 11-50t cassette for about $100 then fork out a further $300 or so for the SRAM GX Eagle groupset. You'll get the entire 12 speed drivechain in one easy go plus it uses the DUB Bottom Bracket system. This is great if you have an older BB shell which may not fit some of the newer cranks too well. If you can get an XD driver for your hub, do so and omit the NX cassette, the 10-50t GX cassette gives you a better range however requires the previously mentioned driver.

@andrewince88242 жыл бұрын
@@toothlessboss if it's going on a HG spline then it should do. Just make sure the hub body and cassette use the same spline interface. Both SRAM and Shimano recently(ish) made new standard bodies for their 12 speed and top-end kit. Most cassettes are still HG though. The one thing to look out for is a spacer that some freehubs have. It's between the cassette and hubshell on the freehub body and it's just there to ensure limited range cassettes (often 9 speed or less) are indexed for the best chainline. That needs to come off for an 11spd.

Just an FYI for anyone reading, the Shimano HG hub, usually known as the "8-10 speed hub" (as you see on the bike in this video) will normally fit any mountain bike cassette 8-12 speed that is made for this standard of hub. Some earlier versions of the hub won't fit 10 speed+, but that's from the late 90s, early 2000s. Now, the catch is that this hub will not work with standard 11 speed road cassettes. They need the specific 11 speed Shimano HG hub with the extra space to fit. Since I'm already on this tangent, there are 11 speed road cassettes that will fit the mountain bike sized HG hub, but they have to list that they are "8-10 speed hub" compatible in the specifications.

Cool upgrade, yeah I'd been wondering if an old 8/9 spd hub could support the newer cassettes. I think they add more gears by making the chain narrower, so that's probably why it's compatible.
@andrewince88242 жыл бұрын
Yep. That's exactly how it's done. A 7 speed chain is 7mm wide at the pins, a 12spd chain is about 5.1mm wide at the pin. But, the plates are pretty much the same thickness which is where the confusion and up until recently skepticism about narrower chains came from. For a fair while people were worried a narrower 12spd chain would be weaker. While they aren't as tough they're still solid and despite my best efforts, still haven't snapped one.

Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks

Love how you upgrade your bike

It only fitted because the Shimano 11sp mtb cassette is the same width as a 9/10 sp. However the 11sp Shimano road cassettes are wider and require a wider freebody. As a matter of further information, Shimano 10sp road cassettes are narrower than 8/9 which is the reason for the thin spacer. It's a bit complicated, so check compatibility before you commit to spending cash or contemplate getting to work with a file.

Bravo! The 11sp cassette fits on my sport pitch 2015 perfect real problems are - the rear 11sp derailller - needs an extra piece to fit this old bike skelet - the 11sp shifter needs adjustment on the steering - doesn't grip on itself and it can't be held by the old brake grip - must change the front disks - the 11 sp chain needs arangement for all the changes mentioned above its alot of work...

I upgraded my pitch to an entire SRAM NX Eagle drivetrain (which is a 1x12 drivetrain) and it works like a dream. Just letting anyone know who wants to upgrade to 12 speed.

Awesome video thanks for sharing that! But, you really need a lot more torque on the lock ring than that. The friction from sandwiching the cogs and spacers together helps distribute the load from pedaling and prevents those nasty dings on the hub body, or something like that. Also "dork" disks are actually really good, especially if you swap wheels with frequency or might bang your derailleur when riding (say for cyclocross, etc). And that might explain why you still see them show up consistently on some higher end wheels. I didn't learn that the hard way, nah... RIP my rear tubular wheel spokes.

Dork disc are actually required by law, or maybe its a manufacturer standard. Its a safety thing so people who dont know to adjust their derailleur dont get a chain caught in the wheel. And yeah he really NEEDS a LOT more torque on that lock ring!!

My road bike is supposed to have an extra spacer with the 10 speed cassette, and to put an 11 speed cassette, it is a bit wider, so it doesn't have a lockring, and the cogs/teeth are thinner. In terms of 12 speed, what i think is happening there is there is a small cog with 10 teeth and the newer ones even have 9 teeth. This is to make up for a faster top end bike speed with only one chainring. Regardless of perceived space on the length/depth of the hub, these won't fit because the inner diameter of the cogs are too small. I understand the reason the small cog is limited to 11 teeth is because of the cassette's inner diameter. The 12 speed hub has a smaller diameter, probably due to advances in metals - less metal, but stronger, so they can make it smaller? y new wheels support 10 and 11 speed, so i can go up to an 11 if i want to change my shifters etc, but i can't go 12 speed. Which is ok. I will prob go from 8s to 9s on my old bike the box, so i can get rid of the dang shifting on the front 3 chainrings :-)

good job, but there is a youtube video about dork discs, too.....which says its good to have, prevents damage, when the chain jumps off the cassette into the spokes

It's obvious 7,8,9,10,11 speed compatible to old freehub body of the hub. But if 12 speed it needs microspline freehub body type
