"I went to Greyhawk. I played with Gary Gygax in Greyhawk." O.o
@SourBramble2 жыл бұрын
Why is this such a weird quote? Not trying to be rude but is there something I’m not understanding? Just the fact he played with Gary?
@TheNeilChatelain2 жыл бұрын
@@SourBramble sure, just the fact that he played with Gygax, not a big deal. He's only the creator of DnD, so playing DnD with him is nothing of importance. And also Greyhawk is not to make fuzz about. It's only one of the original and more legendary settings in the game, created by Gygax himself and expanded over many decades. An unremarkable quote indeed.
@SourBramble2 жыл бұрын
@@TheNeilChatelain I'm fully aware the importance of playing with the founder of the game and the world that started it all, I was just clarifying that that was what his comment was about and making sure I understood the context, I appreciate the information though and I hope you have a great day!

I was not sure of my issue until university. Before I just thought I was stupid or slow witted. I was able to work around the problem but it took time. Gaming helped a lot with rules and reading short stories of magazines. Now people are more aware and have better treatments for the issue, but gaming always helps train the mind. Game on

Great discussion. My only complaint is that Matt interrupted him at some really good points several times that I wanted to hear his train of thought. Most seemed to be Matt trying to get a finer detail on something else but I really just wanted to hear Jim tell the story.

It's really hard when you interview somebody to stay quiet, especially when you like what they're saying. You just want to talk, nod, in a way to interact and encourage what they're saying. That said, Matt should really learn not to interrupt next time he interviews somebody.

1:15 - Remembering the time the party I was DMing for was camping in a cave when we stopped gaming for the night - hard-drive crashed that week and when we resumed we realized my brother's character sheet had been burned, literally, to start a fire after the game and we didn't have ANY other copies... so his character died in his sleep from the mold spores they'd breathed in earlier in the adventure. And the players loved it because it felt real in some strange way.

I said it on Twitter, but it's worth repeating. This was an absolute delight in every sense of the word. Jim is a phenomenal guy. This was like watching Howard Cosell interview Babe Ruth, only Ruth is also a Jedi. I would love to see more Jim videos. A basic painting video, DM improvisation technique, how to design a mega-dungeon, or whatever else he wants to talk about. Even if it's Matt and Jim responding to viewer questions. Hearing where they align is almost as interesting as finding out where they diverge. Matt, if your rolls suck, it must because you used up all your luck gaining Jim as a friend.

Yo, thanks so much for making and posting this video; best thing of video and platforms like youtube is the archiving of elders who function like people's historians of culture and traditions. This video is awesome! My first ever gaming/dnd shop experience was at the War House in Longbeach, hahahaha, I had no idea it had that kind of history; it was a funny experience. I show up an hour before the store's listed closing time and the older gentleman there was already locking up; he greets me at the door and asks, "Are you going buy something?" I say yes but that I'll return when he's open and the guy looks at my 9 year old nephew and says, "No, no, no, if you're buying than I have a responsibility to stay open.. As long as you actually are buying.. What do you want because I know where everything is and it'll be faster if I get it for you." He was actually sort of funny/rude, I could see him rubbing people the wrong way but I have always enjoyed the experiences I have with him as sort of humorous scenes.

My dad started playing AD&D in 1980, his first year of Senior High school in the small town of Las Cruces, NM. The bookstore he got his stuff from had a 1978 Third Alpha print of Monster Manual (despite more recent printings having hit the shelves elsewhere), but his first book was the 1980 Sixth print of the PHB. Watching this interview inspired me to ask him about his own experiences. He didn't start as early as 1974, but only six years later he was building his own dungeons and making his own characters (always a Half-Elf; he was a big Tolkien fan). Good stuff, fond memories. I started in March of 1978. My mom took me to The Pegasus Gift Shop off of Foothill Blvd in a small shopping center near a Carl's Junior as I recall in LaVerne California, I was thirteen at the time. A woman named Kathy owned and ran the shop, she later moved her shop to Covina or it might have been West Covina (its been to long for me to recall which) Anyhow there were a couple gaming tables and we would play the brand new ADnD 1st edition though only the players handbook and monster manual were out and a lot of us were also playing with the rules from the small original DnD books as well. I also used to hang out at another gaming shop off of Foothill known as The Strategic Retreat as I recall. A lot of late night weekend games there. Good times those early days of the hobby. The Retreat became my main hangout for some years before I joined the military. I also recall going to The Last Grenadier Game Store as well but that was more to snag things that the other stores didn't have, they were too far for us to make it a hangout as teens.

What a great video. I felt like I really got to appreciate this history and the whole time I felt like I was experiencing something greater than myself. as a dm, I'm just humbled and have so much more appreciation for what dnd means to not just me but to the fantasy culture in general.

I really enjoyed this. I love hearing about the evolution of D&D, as I played in the early 80s myself and spent many a night reading and re-reading the DM guide. I also love the war stories. Keep up the good work!

Great video, I'd love to see more like this. Not just with other DMs (though that would be awesome,) but more conversations with Jim. He's a great wealth of knowledge, and beyond entertaining to listen to. P.S. Thanks for the recommendation on the Casca series, Jim; they were a lot of fun.

I discovered your channel the other day, after promising to run my first game in decades for the nieces and nephews. This interview brought it all back. Once again I could see the dealer table at Minicon 11 where my fifteen year old self picked up the three original books plus Chainmail. Thanks to you and Jim for sharing these stories!

I binge watched all your other videos and saved this one for last. I knew it would bring back all my old memories, and it did. I became my group's DM early on, because we just had to play and there were no other DM's around. Thanks for the videos. I have tons of stories to tell. Now, I want to go make new memories.

There is a lot of fun and knowledge to glean from this video! Thanks Matt! Also, because of all the tips you've given in your running the game videos, I was able to run my first session as DM the other week with a group of mostly veteran players and was able to give them a memorable and fun time! Thanks for what you contribute to the hobby!

Just another comment on how I don't want polished, marketing documentaries but a series of personal shared stories of the pioneers on their perspective of how things came to be and in their lives. This interview is a pure treasure to the hobby and Matt C., you have done us another service of genius bringing this. Jim is an amazing dude and the energy and excitement in the casual banter is what we love about this stuff. This idea of interviewing should be a business project to bring to the people, but requires a host as equally involved and excited so it's more than just a lame Q&A. Also, thanks for shedding light to any new players watching, it's not about always living and old players understand death happens and should happen within reason regularly as a apart of the game, not a tragic mistake waiting to happen. It's just how games were played back then and evolved today that every makes it to high levels is beyond inconceivable. Sometimes, someone will die to advance or you learn to retreat the path.

I'm so glad I found this video. Ive been playing DnD for a good 15 years now. Ive known DnD my whole life though, because in my youth I had the privilege of watching my father DM for his group of friends, including my uncle. Now Im almost 30 and have DM'd for a good 5years now WITH my uncle and my father as players (both formerly DM's of their own campaign). At first I was super intimidated, because I wasnt very good at roleplaying, making stuff up on the spot, maybe I would forget a rule, etc.. All thats behind me now and its been such a fun time DMing for them and letting THEM be the players. It's almost a rite of passage, its really really cool. After watching this interview I think my next session will be our usual game of course, but I never really thought about asking them what it was like being a gamer in the 70's 80's, and this video has inspired me to do so. I hear stories that they tell about their adventures and magic items they've used (or invented) but I never really gave the thought of asking the big questions, like "how did first hear about DnD" and "what other fantasy games did you play in that era." Little did they know they would be passing down this fun game to their kids, and now I get to pass it down to my daughter! Who at 9 years old has declared she wants to roll up a wizard. Im excited to see this game live on and on through the change in technology. Again. Thank you for sharing your experience Jim, and thank you for catching it on video Matt!

What a cheeky way to end the video :P I really enjoyed this one. It's so neat to get the perspective of someone who has been around in the hobby for so long talking about what it was like back when (as he said) "life [was] cheap", etc. Thanks Matt, and thanks Jim!

Matt, you're not alone on that feeling of not wanting to re-record the interview and have it feel canned. One of my favorite radio shows will discuss upcoming topics during breaks and when they realize they're starting to venture into discussion that they want for the show someone will blurt "SAVE IT, SAVE IT" so as to not ruin the moment that's only there the first time people engage on a topic.
