@@NicholasMage013 listen, everyone has a way of running their own games, and if you're that good at improv, then be my guest and just wing the whole thing. But I personally just like to set up what would happen if the players don't interfere, and then lay down 5 adventure hooks, for main quests or side quests, to allow the players to act. And then I have a basic idea of what might happen if they follow those hooks, but at that point it's mainly improv, and moving around shit behind the screen. Though I'm still a fairly new DM.

The first game I DM’d was completely unscripted since I’d never read the books, our old DM was sick and they volunteered me and I was thrust in. My game involved an elven ranger and a half-orc fighter saving a cheese makers daughter. Oh, and there was something involving a talking raptor and a golden statue of Mr. Sanders from KFC. It was weird.

My notes tend to dilute in quality as the session goes on. Opening with detailed paragraphs of room descriptions and such. By the end it's just "This dude is here. He will fight the heroes."

Yeah I'm familiar with the whole 'whole leave space for actual like names because you don't wanna disrupt your train of thought. However I've learned to put brackets around those placeholder stuff like "the party must venture to [TOWN NAME] and retrieve [MAGIC ITEM]" so that when I (ideally) come back to it I can k ow what I was talking about.

I don't often write detailed notes, but if I did I'm sure the old ones would be just as cringey as these. I still remember a few early sessions I ran back in the 3.0 days, like when the party visited a town that celebrated "Slaphappy Day." On that day everyone had permission to slap each other in the face as hard and as often as they liked. You could hide inside your home all day if you didn't want to take part.
