At 4:32 at the start of the construction project at the kicking horse pass I checked some of the phases of it what would’ve looked like for highway east and at 6:26 it’ll probably have four lane traffic with Eliminating all of the curves and sharp turns

Such an amazingly beautiful road. I especially loved the view of the Park Bridge and the road cutting through the hill immediately after - a fantastic feat of engineering! 👍

yeah that cut is a favourite section to drive. There's even a truck runaway lane there when coming the other way.

1:45 What does flashing green light mean? Or is that only the camera?
@TransCanadaPhil
@TransCanadaPhil 3 жыл бұрын
In British Columbia, a flashing green globe signal is used at a pedestrian crossing or intersection, at which pedestrians have the ability to stop traffic to allow a safe crossing. So in theory, if a citizen was walking by they could tap the crossing button and it would change. The flashing green is just letting drivers know it's one of those kinds of lights.

Absolutely brilliant upgrades. It's going to be one heck of a long-distance journey when this entire roadway is upgraded to 4 lanes. Thanks for taking the time to film this and upload it onto the 'Tube. Cheers!

I was worried when I was recording it that it wouldn't turn out well because of all the smoke. Now I think it just adds an element of spookyness to the scene! 😁

Very nice to see the road improvements there. First time I drove there in 2008 the new bridge was just opened, and then in 2010, 2012 and 2014 every time there were new improvements. Hope for another video when the road is finished, I bet it will be spectacular.

@@TransCanadaPhilWell, I loved it. I thought that the ethereal feel of these tracks were great for the look of the surreal smoky sky. My toes were tapping on this one. And I loved the "kick" at 10:18.

@@davidborrink137 thanks for the comments! The smoke was really intense that day, it's the entire reason I ended up leaving a day early from my camping trip because the air quality had really taken a nosedive that day. I'm glad I was able to get some unique footage out of though. :-)

Wow!! This has definitely come a long way i seven years!! It's a shame I won't get out there again since the last time I was through was to see my great-aunt (right before I discovered you!!) who has since moved to Brandon, then Minnedosa, then passed from Covid isolation. :(

Great video! I'm finally going to take on the Kicking Horse Pass later this month, but it'll be bittersweet knowing it's probably gonna involve being stuck in construction traffic. The plans posted for the current upgrades are really exciting to look at though.

Is there any info as to why a tunnel wasn’t built for the phase 4 of the Kicking Horse Pass Project? …A tunnel has so many advantages, eliminates grades, corners , rock and avalanche concerns , winter snow removal, stream and wildlife disturbance, , traffic disruption while under construction , to name a few. If this project was in Europe it likely would been a tunnel .
@TransCanadaPhil
@TransCanadaPhil 3 жыл бұрын
That was the original plan, to build a tunnel. It was changed later. The new route will reduce the current back and forth hairpin turns to a series of just a few large radius gentle curves that will stick out over the canyon over a series of bridges. It costs a lot less but it will still be designed for high speed travel and should give some amazing views as the road takes shortcuts over the canyon. 😃 Here's a bit of a flyover of the final concept: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXOakJqcot99bsk

"Banked curves". I already want to check it out! 😎
@TransCanadaPhil
@TransCanadaPhil 3 жыл бұрын
the plan is pretty elaborate. Originally they were going to dig tunnels right through the mountain to straiten the course, but instead they came up with this plan that the road will cross the canyon back and forth over multiple bridges to maintain a straight path instead of hugging one side of the cliff as the current highway does.

What was the filming date of this? Smoke from those wildfires actually reached New Orleans last week. Just a slight haze, but it was noticeable. And you could smell it too.
@TransCanadaPhil
@TransCanadaPhil 3 жыл бұрын
This footage was from last year (Sept 14 2020), there was a big wildfire issue in Idaho and Washington state at the time and it flowed right into the National Parks in British Columbia and Alberta. I had been backpacking in Kootenay National Park for the week but I left a few days early because the smoke was getting so bad. Just got around now to editing it to a video last week. The forest fires were bad last year, and they are even worse this year. The smoke is now all across western Canada including Winnipeg.

Nice work on the video. Did you take the photos at the beginning of the video yourself? If so they are quite good. I'm happy that Kicking Horse is being upgraded. I find that stretch of highway to be pretty embarrassing to still be located on Canada's premier national highway.

Interesting to compare this with the 1966 footage from the archives of Transport BC: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZvYY6ltdrebj5Y. If anyone thinks the last last leftover section of two-lane road was scary in 2020, that has nothing on how it was in '66. Mind you, I admit to kind of missing the old road, but it was of its time and a new wider faster road is definitely needed.

Yes the upgrades have been a long time coming. I can't even begin to imagine what the drive between Vancouver to Calgary was like back in the 60s. 😄

I never really understand why they use the term carriageway to describe a road. It's kind of old school. I beleive it's a British thing and of course Canada adopts British English. I don't beleive the US ever uses that term.
