@TransCanadaPhil3 жыл бұрын
yes it's a huge difference. I drove in Europe for the first time a few years back and it has a very different feel to it. Driving in Canada/US is easier because you don't have to pay attention as much, you can just sort of let your mind wander for hours on the road. That's not the case in Europe I found where you really have to pay attention all the time.

yes, the simple way to do that would be to re-align to the TCH to connect thru south Calgary (instead of 16th in the north) and connect to Glenmore Trail. Only a few more interchanges on Glenmore and it would be a complete freeway route through the city.

I also noticed that all of the bridges over the Regina Bypass have the stylized outline of Saskatchewan (in yellow and green) that is used as the provincial government's official logo, along with applying blue-grey paint to the bridges and retaining walls. As a Texan, that kind of attention to detail reminds me a lot of what TxDOT does with putting the outline of Texas (and applying substantial paint jobs) on many bridges down here. And despite being almost 20 degrees of latitude further north, the Saskatchewan landscape (at least in the summertime) does not look all too different from the Texas panhandle from the ground, albeit it is more lush (drought can still be a concern even that far north). The cooler climate does mean that less evapotranspiration, or the loss of moisture to the atmosphere, occurs relative to the central and southern Plains; furthermore, on much of the northern Plains (excluding the Cypress Hills, most of Montana's portion of the high plains except near the Canadian border, SW ND and W SD) there are plenty of natural lakes that resulted from glacial erosion.

Yasss! Great video. Meanwhile, Winnipeg is getting one interchange at St. Mary's - lol. The TCH isn't a freeway through all of SK though - yes, no lights, but still cross-traffic and left turns.
@TransCanadaPhil3 жыл бұрын
you are right. That's why I was careful to say, Saskatchewan is the first province in western Canada to have a completely twinned, free-flowing TCH, not necessarily freeway (as there could still be uncontrolled/unsignalized intersections). IMHO that's good enough for most of western Canada. I don't think it's really needed to have interchanges for those dozens of minor "Range Roads" which only have a few cars/day.
@polskiewinnipeg3 жыл бұрын
i mean if the ndp was like doer the province would have been better off finacially for the last decade of population growth sadly.
@passatboi3 жыл бұрын
@@TransCanadaPhil Yeah, but free-flowing normally means no cross streets, stops, left turns, etc. Left turns and traffic turning on to the road without merging ramps impede the flow.

@@TransCanadaPhil Is your goal to fly from BC?
@BrandonClaridge3 жыл бұрын
I do recall you saying something about how interchanges and overpasses with very minor roads were overkill on Interstate 29 in North Dakota. It seems that US states will do what is necessary to make certain major highways Interstate-standard, even though that can add a lot of extra expense. North of the 49th parallel MB-75 is an at-grade divided highway by comparison, though it is not entirely free-flowing due to signal lights in St. Norbert (southern Winnipeg) and in Morris. Ideally there should be a free-flowing highway (not Interstate standard of course) from the US border to the Perimeter Highway.

We need better infrastructure in Western Canada. We need a new highway starting just west of Golden BC, following through the Howse Pass, connecting Alberta's highway 11, then Highway 11 needs upgrades. Then East of Red Deer to Saskatoon. There's not a great highway from Red Deer to Saskatoon and it is needed. Calgary needs a new route for Highway 1. Glenmore makes sense, although it could be like Washington, DC and the Stoney could take Highway concurrently with 201. The Deerfoot needs to be 8 lanes throughout Calgary, as well as 8 lanes north of Calgary to Airdrie. Highway 16 in Edmonton needs to become a full freeway and should be no less than 8 lanes. There needs to be a better route North and South in Edmonton, too, and the south leg of the Anthony Henday needs to 6 lanes minimum. Highway 1 needs to be a 4 lane freeway throughout BC and the Coquihalla should be signed as Highway 1. From the Aggasiz interchange to Abbotsford should be 6 lanes minimum and Abbotsford to West Vancouver should be at least 8 lanes minimum. There is no practical way to build a ring road in the Lower Mainland, therefore what is there needs substantial upgrades.
@highway2heaven912 жыл бұрын
Agree with most of this comment. However, the reason for most of this is lack of funding for Highway projects in Western Canada, coupled with bureaucracy (as far as I know). There has been some talk of extending Highway 11 there just may not be enough demand for it. It seems that most people in Red Deer are content with zipping down to Calgary on the QE2 and taking the TCH from there to either BC or SK (Or using other existing roads. Once again, I may be wrong here). Stoney Trail would be a better candidate for a Highway 1 realignment since rerouting it to Glenmore trail would require buying more land since there is no existing corridor to get back to the current route on either side of Calgary. The same argument could be used for Edmonton as Highway 16 could be rerouted along the Northern ring of the Anthony Henday. However there are plans to upgrade 16 to a full freeway eventually, they just need the money. A good N-S route doesn't exist mainly because there isn't really anywhere you can go north of Edmonton aside from Fort McMurray and you can easily connect with highways that can get you there using the Henday. Anyone going to Yellowknife or Grande Prairie can just use Highway 16. If you need to get anywhere else, there are decent options but anything major would require having to displace homes and businesses. Funding issues kept the Henday and Deerfoot from being widened as well. BC probably has funding issues with Hwy 1 as well, although I have no idea why the Coquihalla hasn't been resigned as Hwy 1 yet. They also could find some way to upgrade/reroute Pacific Hwy outside of Langley to a freeway/divided highway for a better connection to I-5 from Highway 1.
@landongendur2 жыл бұрын
I still think they should've named the new bypass "Pussyfoot Trail" so you can pussyfoot around Regina.
