When I added the guides to the mill, they ended up in not quite the right position so up until now, the blade was guiding itself through the cut. The placement of the guides also prevented me from tracking the blade back far enough onto the wheels. I modify the mounting posts (1:15), track the blade (8:28), set the guides (12:13), and test the set up by milling a pair of logs (spruce and elm)(16:24).

I'm sure some mentioned this, but next time slide you steel tube over the handle of the ratchet. The extra length will make a better lever. Banging on it will mess up the bearings in the ratchet head or knock the socket at an angle and start rounding the bolt. Your videos are great. Thanks for sharing. I always learn a lot.

+Rod Hays. I agree. You're rolling the log against a vertical stop. I also like the idea of a trough or something to catch the sawdust. I'm lazy and always look for a easier way to do it. I love watching you cut those beautiful boards. I live in the Pacific Northwest and never see the variety of trees that you are cutting.

Awesome... that has to be very satisfying to have the monster mill running... I hope you do get the log tuner soon... that will be a huge help for you.... Two yrs back I had 5 big ash trees taken down at my dads place... I was rolling a 24" x 30' log so I could buck it into 3, 10 foot logs... I could roll 1 one log by hand, but just not quit far enough to finish my cut... So I took the Cant Hook to finish it... used my leg just like you have been and tore my bicep, and ligaments in the shoulder... made for a bad day, week, and month of healing... Be safe and keep up the great videos on the mill... Be has been a great joy to watch your journey.

Great job, beautiful lumber. You need to visit a lumber mill and see what they use for rolling logs. They also have dogs for holding logs in place while they are being cut. Find a local sawmill and request a visit, all that I have worked at granted public visits.

Nice job. You have a lot of guitar builders in Minnesota. The acoustic builders would probably be interested in the spruce. The electric builders in the figured maple. Lutherie is one of the highest forms of the woodworkers art in my opinion. It would be cool to see wood you milled turned into a guitar and making beautiful music.

Have you considered using laser pointers to make the shafts parallel? Attach the pointer perpendicular to each shaft. Set up a screen at least 10 feet away. Rotate the shaft. Adjust the pointer until the spot does not move as the shaft rotates. Do the same to the second shaft. Adjust the shafts until the two spots are the same height and as far apart at the two shafts. Double check by moving the screen twice as far away.

If you trust the head and saw deck are square and level, you can turn that leveling tool upside down and set a bullet level on it to level the blade a fair bit quicker than measuring up from the deck.

if you roll the big log the opposite way you were rolling it and tthan slide it against the back stops makes it a lot easier than rolling into the back stops.some sawmills have a half moon to roll big logs in the opposite dirction. nice mill, cutting great!the half moon is kind of like a wheels. when the flat side of the log land on that the wheels the log slides towards the back stops.
