One of the challenges in CAD design is to keep your orientation when your design requires you to design on different planes than the major coordinate planes. In this lesson we begin to learn how to use user defined planes. This video has step by step instruction for beginners.

Paul: Excellent video as usual. One note: It looks like a number of recent viewers got hung up at 40:42 where you add the two point circle constrained to the edge of the existing extruded body. This recent occurrence of the stumbling block perhaps indicates a change in F360's default settings. But in any case: It turns out that F360 won't snap to model edges (that intersect the current sketch plane) unless you have Preferences > Design > "Auto project edges on reference" enabled. Description: "Auto project model edges to be used as a reference when creating constraints and dimensions in active sketch when [view] orientation is normal to the active sketch plane". Ie: you have to also have the view set to be looking straight at the sketch plan, so possibly click the view angle cube. There's also a setting Design > "Auto project geometry on active sketch plane" that looks important too. Perhaps you could add a note about this in the video description, or pin a comment to that effect? It would save people from getting stuck at that point unable to continue, and you're right, this is crucial material!

I must say you are the best Fusion 360 teacher I have ever followed. All the teachers start slow but then go faster to show how good they are, you instead go purportedly slow to keep as many with you as possible. Nerd teachers teach to show how good they are, real teachers work for their students. You are a real teacher.

Thankyou so much Paul! You hit the nail on the head "I can copy what they do, but then when I'm by myself I cant do it". Personally I've played with Fusion 360 for a while, but only now do I feel like I'm understanding it. You teach at a perfect speed, and I very much enjoy the little tricks you try to lead us down. My wife is used to me talking to the screen "Nooo Paul, we use our parameters". Sidenote, I came here from your Arduino tutorials (also great). And hello from Australia!

Sir, We are still alive and proceeding on this learning curve. First of, in response to you final comment about background of people trying to learn this. Mine started with the T square and triangles. Several years after college, this new fangled Autocad came out and I got my hands on a copy of 2.16 (for Dos) and learned that. Time passes (about 25 years or so) and we are still using 2D cad in the construction industry. Since retirement, I have tried several 3D systems and couldn’t make heads or tales out of it. Then all of a sudden, along you come with your system starting with basics and EXPLAINING what your doing along the way (to slow, heck NO) as to many of the you tube videos I review might mention the command syntax, but never in depth. I appreciate your teaching skills. For your viewers out there, the method I use to absorb and learn from your videos is to view it first (not doing any drawing) and then go back and do the procedures along with the second viewing. I was taught that spatial repetition was required to truly learn something not just memorize it which would fail in the short term. One thing that I would like to see is the outline of your lesson plan so I could see what skill sets you have planned down the road. The reason I say that is for instance, I am trying to do some joints (and failing miserably and hope it is coming. As noted above, we are enjoying this series immensely and hope not to loose to much more hair before we get semi-proficient with the process. Thanks in Advance. Art

Well i tried it and I came this far first you should look for the first body and withn a right click make a component from it repeat this for the second body then you should with a right mouseclick on the first component choose ground it then try to assemble the hinges by the joint command which is in the assemble menu point to the centre of one hinge and then select the center of the other hinge and try to fiddle with the sub menu for instance revolve is a setting choose 180 degrees and it will close well maybe the master comes later with a far better tutorial than this but hey I'm not native english speaking kind regards

I concur, I concur, exactly what I’m going to do too. I’m watching this because even though I’ve played around with 360, I only got frustrated and quit. So I consider myself a “beginner” and that’s why I’m watching in the first place. Reiterate, I’m watching the first time thru and not trying to keep up with using Fusion (too time consuming having to back up etc.), then I’ll watch again having a really good understanding of what needs to be done, and then I’ll proceed to go back on my own and try to duplicate w/o watching the video. Then by George I think I’ll have it!

What sets you apart from the other Fusion 360 teachers online is that you don't have any assumptions about your viewers. You don't skip steps that are obvious to you, but may not be obvious to your viewers. If I may offer 2 small tips for you to help navigating the 3d space: 1) Double center mouse button click to center your bodies and auto zoom. 2) Beside the orbit button there is an arrow with some options. Choose constrained orbit instead of free orbit and you won't go tumbling through space as it were while navigating. Thank you for this series and keep up the good work!

In these last 6 videos I have learnt so much, and I totally appreciate (a) your focus on getting the foundational principles locked down; (b) your step-by-step approach in which every step is fully shown & described; and (c) your pace which is right on for me! Paul thanks for the great lessons with, as mentioned, great pacing. I've fumbled about with F360 for over a year with all the frustrations you've described but your lessons have finally got me liking it! Something I discovered watching your lessons: Rather than drawing the lid separately all over again I did as you showed in one of the first lessons and did a rectangular-pattern of 2 items, the base and the top which keeps everything automatically the same as you showed. However, this constrains the new top to the bottom spacing you choose in the rect-pat operation. But! As you enter the distance in the rect-pat operation you make the distance the box width + 20mm. Then as you mess with the box parameters the base and the top stay 20mm apart and you will never have the issue where the base mashes into the top and no way to move the top out of the way.

Thank you so much for these tutorials! I started a small business a few years back, and I got into printing around february. My main reasoning was to prototype products, and to actually create and sell various beta tests to my repeat customers. Long story short I have been paying individuals either a one time fee or percentage of profits for the entire time working for me for certain products (for my designers who are constantly working on various versions released). I am finally starting to feel confident, as its crazy watching some of my designers do complex geometry at lightning speed. Hoping learning CAD is going to save us a lot of money down the road. P.S. I also teach math, and I am a big fan of the method of teaching you use.

Just finished L6 and WOW! Took me about two hours altogether. Going back and forth, checking and rechecking and it was a brilliant example to create. At first, I was thinking about how much extra time it would add using Parameters, but once you use them, you can see the power of Parameters, especially in editing the model. By not showing the pin it just made me do it myself and I did. The Inspect/Measure tool is very helpful to find out exact dimensions of the pin holes. Thanks for the lessons. Great pace and wonderful instructions. Next L7. Thanks again.

I have just finished Lesson 6, what a fantastic job of explaining Fusion 360. I have been trying to teach myself Fusion 360 by watching a lot of videos and playing around with the program. The only thing I learned was how frustrating it can be. I would consider myself an advanced user of SketchUp, all self taught. I am a 75 year old retired engineer, inventor and entrepreneur owner of a company that designed and built factory automation. I hired people with CAD experience and therefore didn’t need it myself. I spent most of my time programming. After I retired I got back into my hobby of woodworking. That is when I taught myself SketchUp several years ago. Needing something more than what SketchUp offered, I started checking out available 3D CAD programs. The first time I downloaded Fusion 360, I deleted it after a few attempts to understand it. But after looking at and playing with several other 3D CAD programs I decided to give Fustion 360 another try. I have no idea how many videos I watched before I found your Lesson 1. Sir, you are an excellent teacher. I don’t know at what level you taught math but I am sure if I had a teacher like you I would have had a far better understand of anything they taught. Please keep up the great work, I appricate the effort you put into each video. I am looking forward to Lesson 7.

Great series of video's. I was brought up as an engineer on a drafting table with a sliderule....Later in life I managed people who did cad designs for me...... but I always wanted to know how to do it. Fusion 360 and your video's are helping a lot. At first I was put off by your style. I felt like a HS student ( I have not felt like that for over 50 years). Turns out I need that level of instruction. By they way.... you did not draw the pin..... an easy compoent. Also you made several mistakes along the way and that was sort of good as it helped me think though the mistakes. So.... Thank you

Paul, you are a BEAST. You've finally cleared up a load of confusion for me. I doubt that's all the confusion I'll have, but this is HUGE. Every other "tutorial" I've seen is truly a demonstration, as they are completely devoid of teaching. It's odd how many of them are like that.

When I make a tutorial, I mentally put myself in the place of the learner. I remind myself the learner does not know the lingo, does not already know the material I am teaching, and does not have expertise in the field. I assume the learner is a hard worker, wants to be successful and will pay attention to what I am saying and showing. With that frame of reference I can actually teach. So many of the CAD tutorials I watch, it is more like the person is just showing off how good they are. They indeed are good, much better than me, but are not imparting that skill to the viewer.

All I want to do is say to you: Wow Paul, GREAT video. I have watched your videos from number one to number six so far and will continue till you decide to stop, because you either ran out of coffee, or died trying. Before I discovered you, I was totally frustrated and ready to quit. I found several other people with instructions for the beginner, but they lost me real quick. They started right out in 3D and assumed I knew more than I did. Heck, I didn't even know what any of the tools were or what they did. Then I found you and that is when the frustration slowly started to disappear. Well, that is until video number six. I paused, started over numerous times, got several cups of coffee and sometimes yelled at the computer screen. But I kept going and after two days, finally finished the project. Your style is spot on, your speed is perfect, yet sometimes a bit to fast for me. That is what pause is for and two monitors makes the process that much better. I am 68 years old, retired, and never used CAD or any drawing programs. I am okay on a computer and actually love operating them. My wife and I are planning on getting a CNC machine and start a side business in wood etc. I have already designed a little trinket that my son and daughter-in-law can hand out to their RV park customers to help them remember the park and hopefully come back in the future. You know, like a refrigerator magnet or so but out of old barn wood. I can't thank you enough for all the effort you put into making these videos. You are greatly appreciated. I sometimes find myself doing moves a bit different than you do which has caused me to realize you are teaching me and I am starting to understand the program. I agree with you on the rotate feature, it does sometimes work a bit weird. I am now just sitting here looking at the finished drawing...smiling at my accomplishment. I give you the credit and take my hat off to you and all your effort. Thanks, from the bottom of my heart and please....keep the videos coming. Now...maybe you thought video six was a little long, but so is my comment to you.

Hi Paul. No you are not insulting me in the slightest. As we went through the hinge implementation I figured out another way of doing the parameters but as with all of these things there are multiple ways of doing the same thing. I'm a 63 year old Emmy winning VFX designer and I cut my teeth many many years ago on CG modelling and animation. I've been around technology all my life but Fusion 360, Cura and 3D printing are a completely new frontier to me in my dotage. I really appreciate your patience and methodical structured approach to what for me is a daunting learning curve. This box is currently printing out on my Ender 3 and yes I added a new parameter called tolerance so that these parts will have a better chance of fitting together. We're probably the same age but you have the knowledge and I don't. Once I've gone through this series I'll be going through your Arduino series. Many many thanks for your efforts. It's greatly appreciated.

Perfect speed for me. Even though I do find myself running ahead of you, you catch back up just at the right time. The split hinge was the first challenge of the series but it marks a crucial point in moving forward with thinking about how CAD is going to work going forward from here. Offset planes was a real turning point and something that I struggled with so much on my own prior to finding this series. Once I saw it I was like... oh ok yeah that makes sense..

Excellent video series. I am finally able to draw something in fusion 360. I started learning by watching NYC CNC and i was completely lost in about 30 seconds even though it was fun to watch. Thank you for breaking it down into actual useful segments that someone can really learn from.

Hi Paul. This series is the best on KZbin for learning Fusion. I've been using Fusion for a while and struggled with some parts and like you I could follow the clever guys. But on my own I'd get frustrated. Tried my own design again last night and it was so much easier. Thank you so much.

I have been going through your videos one at a time and I find them extremely helpful. I can tell you have a teaching background and I think it is very helpful in your presentation. I tried 360 once before and gave up in frustration as you described. Now I am digging in and things are making more sense thanks to your teaching style, thanks.

Paul, the speed of your presentation is just right. Its easy to change the youtube playback speed faster/slower or skip ahead so just keep up the great work. I've learned so much in these videos. You are to the point, review and speak in a very clear and concise manner. Its fun when you make a mistake, because you, like the rest of us are only human. I find that I often learn valuable lessons by making mistakes. Its all good. Thanks so much.

Excellent step by step tutorial. Thank you Paul! One interesting difference in the current version of Fusion360 I could not attach the 2 point circles. My work around was to establish these points with lines from the origin of the planes that has been created based on the parameters. It worked like a charm. I will be on board for the rest of the lessons! Thanks. Doug

Your teaching style is perfect I have had college AutoCAD and Fusion Training but not being a mechanical engineer or coming from a strong math background parts of the program never made sense to me. I grew up reading blueprints and have worked as a machinist, which didnt really transfer over as well as I would have expected. Repetition, is however, a key to success in all things in life and you do a good job repeating the fundamentals which is great because they are easy to forget. I also believe that mastery of the basics is mastery of any subject, so again, great teaching style. You keep it light and interesting.

Thanks for being a fantastic teacher Paul. Even my tired old brain cells are slowly taking things in. Its so good to have somebody explain what and why they are doing something, some tutorials expect you to know far more than an absolute beginner has knowledge of. I have tried to learn CAD drawing before but it never sank in but you seem to get things into my head without much problem. Hopefully it will stay there.

Mr. McWhorter you are right on for a newcomer. I am a EE and now retired and doing some mechanical projects at home. The only thing I could not resolve was when adding the two point circle. When trying to anchor the first point to the box edge I did not get the open circle and it would not lock on. Your view showed a black solid dot there. I didn't have that. I was able to constrain the circle but it was an extra step. Thanks much for your time and I plan to finish the rest of the course.

It turns out that F360 won't snap to model edges (that intersect the current sketch plane) unless you have Preferences > Design > "Auto project edges on reference" enabled.

Paul, I am in the construction business, and I know that the most important part of the job takes place before the walls go up. Footings, Stem Walls, Insulation, Plumbing, Electrical, Heating, Sewer, etc... If all of the below ground work is done correctly, the job can be very smooth. Otherwise, it can be a disaster. I like your approach to teaching this complicated program - it's like building a good house. Good job!!

Hi Paul. I'm really enjoying your instructive videos and appreciate how much time you've spent in preparing each presentation. There's so much within Fusion 360 to learn, but little by little I'm beginning to enjoy it much more. Like you, I almost gave up a number of times, however with your patience and generously giving of your time, many of us are benefiting. Thank you so much from Dorset. UK.

Thanks, Paul, I have been watching your series on Fusion 360, I have had a small amount of experience in CAD, but was struggling with Fusion 360, it's definitely a learning curve. Your videos are excellent, I have been able to go from Amature to maybe beginner after watching the videos. My first model a basic bracket took about 5 hours to be able to print. I have just made a complex Hall effect Adapter in around 30 mins. Your advice of getting it right in 2D first and constraints made all the difference.

Don't change a thing, your teaching style is perfect! This 3d modeling is fascinating. I've never done it before starting your lessons but the logic is very appealing. As a long time inventor, web programmer, graphic artist and traditional painter, 3d design is bringing a lot of my skills together. It's making me want to buy a 3d printer to try this stuff out in the real world!

David Griffiths Thank you Paul for 6 invaluable videos. At 78 you have not yet killed me off. I managed the hinge units when I realized the flatwidth divided by 4 got rid of bottom/top fraction parameters. The two end units are equal in length to the centre hinge unit. Go easy in number 7 and I may yet survive.

Pace is great for me, as is the emphasis on dimensioning as you draw. I struggled with all the freehand demos of Sketchup online, having come from using 2D Autocad and various 2D multilayer PCB CAD packages in my working life. Now I'm retired, you're helping me to get to grips with 3D mechanical drawing. Great. Thank you.
