I remember playing this game as a kid a few times, then my parents outlawed it, after seeing this video, their actions do make sense. In regards to what I remember of the game itself, I remember a Batman takeover event where you had to find the Joker in various locations (such as trying to takeover the DJ booth in animal jam or replacing the newscaster in uptown) as well as a Series of Superhero quests by Heroic Man (I could never get past the Symbol Shuffle one) and A series of Spy quests, (Even though I figured out the first location was Runamok park, I could never figure out what I was supposed to do there.) This makes me think that along with the controversy, the games were harder than the average kids virtual world of the 2000s.

Happy studio had codes, and it unlocked some things, I cant remember what exactly it did. Everytime there was a new happy meal toys series, they made a new code (it was one for all the happy meals), and it unlocked some things, like decorations for your playground.

Did you ever know of hubba bubba world? It was a mini world online with bubble gum characters but they took it out after some time, I can barely find anything online about it. It was more on the Nickelodeon side of tv where they would promote it.
