Skip to 17:20 for the research to help differentiate people who chose different paths.

I wish I'd known about this presentation before the end of my pre-med career!

@@sorry_not_sorry6410 I would have made different decisions earlier on to make myself ready, and show myself as an MD/PhD applicant. Spilled milk now. I'm applying this cycle so I'm hoping for the best!

@@ShinySephiroth1 Ι wish you good luck and a lot of success!!! I am finishing my MD now and I am considering a PhD program before residency but staying 5 years out of clinics really stresses me.

@@sorry_not_sorry6410 Thank you, I'll need all the help I can get! And I'm glad you mentioned that, because I know getting into MD/PhD is much more difficult than just MD, so I've been trying to see what my options will be if I can't get into a joint program. I looked into CIPs to get a PhD during residency, but there don't seem to be many. Have you spoken to your counselors about getting a PhD post-MD? I'm curious to hear what they have to say if so!

@@ShinySephiroth1 I see it is pretty unconditional to do a post-MD PhD yet not impossible. My goal would be to do a PhD that combines clinical life with lab work. Unfortunately it is quite difficult in the US. Have you found people that have done this path?

Dr. Lee, I have a question: I am quite familiar with how the MD and the MD/PhD students are trained, but how about the "MD students with research emphasis?" Do they take more classes in the first and second years of their basic and clinical science training than the regular MD degree students or not? How much laboratory work can those students undertake to learn biomedical research, in addition to the heavy load traditionally carried by medical students, without stepping away for 4 years as the MD/PhD students do for their PhD degree component?

A better title is MD vs PhD. Speaker was mis-informed about MD/PhD.

Jose Cavazos Are you a MD PhD student/ graduate. If so, do you mind sharing your experience.

Yes. I did both degrees and residency/fellowship. Established my research lab, was promoted, eventually became director of a MD/PhD program. If you search "Cavazos MD PhD", the first hit can tell you more about MD/PhD careers, and the last 5 min (of 45) tells you about my contributions to science and medicine.

Amazing. One can onlyaspire to be as relevant and distinguished as you are. I still am very confused about what path to take. Hopefully throughout my years in undergraduate studies I will ring my calling.

Thanks. I have worked hard, have some luck, and enjoyed the journey. Me and others still have impostor syndrome (google it) but also see my contributions in Google Scholar. Resilience is a better predictor of success (once you reach a given level of smarts) than exceptional smarts.... Dream big, but make decisions that support your dreams even if they are hard.
