I was an MD-11 flight test engineer in YUMA Arizona and was privileged to be on the very first training flight with the KLM pilots. Five years later I helped deliver one of MartinAirs MD-11 to Mr. Martin himself, and was asked to help his flight crews in the capacity of flight engineer for 4 months. I learned a lot about what it meant to be part of a flight crew. I've seen a few pilot retirements in my long career but I've never seen the CAPTAINS expression captured in the cockpit ,and I just want to say, screw the Gold watch! I'll take the water cannons instead! What a Great way to remember your retirement. I Like that smile on his face...it tells the story. Great video!

Aircraft Spotter I thought about whether I should actually state that I knew this was not the last KLM MD11 flight knowing I would get this sort of comment. Yes, I know you folks pretty well. I had originally thought it was based on what someone said, then watched it and realized it was not. I felt I should comment anyway to congratulate the captain but then I thought it would be weird to say congrats on a great career to the captain without mentioning the latest about how the KLM MD11 is being phased out. Which is why I wrote the comment in the way I did. You may notice that if you read the comment a little more carefully. I did not say that the retirement of the MD11 and this man's last flight were on the same day.... ;)

Vanochtend is voor het laatst officieel door de KLM gevlogen met de MD11, erg jammer. Vanaf nu zullen er nog een aantal gebruikt worden voor Cargo en nog een aantal voor rondvluchten. Ik heb deze video echt al ruim 40 keer gekeken, zo mooi gemaakt met die muziek ook. Bedankt voor deze video!

The MD-11 was so ahead of its time! Magnificent bird, a true workhorse. Those LSAS systems worked like a charm. The feeling of flying this thing is like a knife slicing through butter.

I got to do a round trip once on a MD-11 back in the Martinair days from Oakland California to Amsterdam in 1997. Loved the experience and was hoping to try to get some more flights in but I noticed more and more airlines started taking them out of their fleets. This and the DC-10 series were very unique and will be missed greatly.

Nice video. Very touching tribute to the pilot with the ground vehicles escorting him to the gate. Must have been a very touching moment for him. As far as the MD-11, I first flew on a KLM MD-11 about 12 yrs ago and have flown it numerous times since with one last flight booked for August 1st from Montreal to AMS. I'm looking forward to the flight. While there may be newer planes with better technology this one has a place in my heart. Will be sad to no longer seeing it land in Montreal : (

I remember September 2012 when I was in Amsterdam for a training when my colleagues and I went off the train I looked in the sky, wondering, if I might see a KLM or even a MD11 flying. And I swear to god, the first plane I saw was a KLM MD11 coming in to land at Schipol. Really like these and really like to fly the PMDG one :) Sad it will be retired but that's the way it goes :)

The MD 11 is an upgraded version of the DC 10 ; The10 had some serious problems at first, but it grew into a fine aircraft ; and the DC 10/ MD 11 are very fun to watch land. They have a dramatic flareout, especially in full-flap configuration. The very coolest airliner to watch land is the old 727.

It's just soo sad. To be honest this aircraft isn't my favourite, but it's my 3rd favourite aircraft. It might not be as majestic as some others and on first look one might think it's a bit chubby but it actually is one of the most important aircraft in aviation history. It has flown distances one never thought it would during the time it took off in the air. It has witnessed times most of us didn't witness and it's one of the hardest working aircraft till today. If I would have been PIC on that landing I would've requested a fly-by just to brag and show off. Not to brag with my skills but showing off the aircraft that took me safely wherever I companioned it. I give you, dearest McDonnell Douglas MD-11, a big wing wave. This is more than enough to make a grown man cry. Sleep tight, old friend.

In dit filmpje gaat de piloot met pensioen, het ging hierin niet om het vliegtuig. Maar uiteraard gaat vandaag zondag 11 januari 2015 ook de laatste naar haar rustplaats worden overgevlogen in Carlifornia (Mojave Aircraft en Space Center) om daar van haar verdiende pensioen te genieten. KLM wilde graag een toestel bewaren; maar er zijn volgens een woordvoerder van communicatie al 3 grote vliegtuigen geschonken. 2x Fokker 100 en een Boeing 747, op Aviodrome was blijkbaar geen plaats meer vrij. Helaas!

I`ve seen this aircraft only few times recent years. This is really rare but very beautiful bird :) Love it :) It`s sad, but KLM retires all of MD-11 until August 2014. Now there are only 4 MD-11`s in fleet :(

boffis123 Well the 350 XWB(Extra Wide Body) gives you extra space, and comes in 3 liverys. a small medium and large(to keep it simple) while the b787 has only 1 livery.
