+Kyle Pittman Yeah I mean many veterans loved their job while hating it at the same time. It seems to be very bittersweet. You would obviously hate the fear and losing people around you, but the adrenaline, thrill and even experiences out of combat would make you feel like you have the best job in the world. I never done any of that stuff so I can't relate to it, but I am a slight enthusiast on military things. I've watched many fact based movies and documentaries. Very often I get the impression they loved it, except the times when they hated it. Sounds weird, but I'm not sure how to put it, I'm sure you guys know what I mean :P

Carl Golli So when you join it’s simple you do to get away, to learn new stuff, meet new friends and people (life long brothers/sisters)(don’t know that yet until you experience having to depend on each other for damn near everything not limited to your life and the thought of knowing they will get you back to your family and vice versa, the man to your left and the man to your right that’s all that matters nothing else goes through your head at the time.. And no so please don’t talk about those things. Oh and to shoot guns and kill stuff! Lol

Checking out the latest version of War Thunder using the Oculus Rift and other flight sim hardware. A really nice balance of realism and fun. Still the most popular of the demos I do with people in virtual reality :) The aircraft I use for real life comparison isn't a tail dragger, but does have differential brake steering with a PITA free castering nose wheel :) You need SDK .5 in "Extended Mode" for this to work with the Rift right now. If you get "Rift not detected", most likely you are too new, or not in "Extended Mode". For those not interested in the gear, up in the air at 3:57 :)

+mdbuehler nice video. I own a DK2 myself and I remember that the scale was off in War Thunder, but that's many months ago. Do you think the scale is fine with the current build?
@mdbuehler8 жыл бұрын
+Trabbilord I've got a fairly wide IPD, which always made the scale seem mostly normal to me even when it was off for other people (assuming that is why it felt normal). It does seem a little larger than it was before support broke awhile ago when it was about perfect, so I'd be curious to hear from others about how the scale feels to them now.

+mdbuehler I don't want to be rude with my comment, but as very long time player in war thunder planes and tanks I can say this. I do like your gear and all, I love playing simulation games, racing flying, but war thunder is not simulation at all. My question is how much war thunder paid you to make this review?? There are much much better flying simulators which laugh at war thunder. I do like your video and set up, but I don't like what you saying because it's not truth and clearly they paid you to say it. Sorry I don't know how long you played war thunder for, but I have played it for years and years and it's not what it used to be-it's sh*t.
@mdbuehler8 жыл бұрын
+PUNISHERMARKO Not rude at all, no worries! I've been playing since they first let people in on the Beta. I haven't received any money, in game currency, airplanes or otherwise from War Thunder or anybody (I legally can't even if I wanted too since I flew a real airplane to get footage). I made this because I like VR, love airplanes, and like sharing the two with others. War Thunder is a simulator (in sim mode), not the most realistic but they know that and I say that several times in the video. It is a fun balance between real but not too difficult. I fly DCS / FSX / Prepar3D / IL2 / real airplanes as well so I know the differences between them and many WT players do too. Enjoy it for what it is :)

My dad turned 75 this year, he gave up his license a few years back due to age, he says he dreams about flying every night and wakes up with tears in his eyes. Would be really cool to get a VR set and a game like this set up at home for him next time he comes to visit. I think it would blow his mind.
@mdbuehler4 жыл бұрын
Several years ago I set this all up with Flight Sim X at a senior center (instead of War Thunder or DCS) near KPAE in Everett. Several long time civilian pilots who'd stopped flying many years earlier spent all afternoon "flying" around the Seattle area. They did great! Didn't get lost, took off and landed just fine, and had an awesome time. Those that weren't VR flying were hangar flying with the others in the room. I bet your dad would love it too!
@smaariseth4 жыл бұрын
@@mdbuehler Yeah I think he would go bananas😄 I have a computer strong enough for VR, but no VR headset, do you know of one that is not to expensive? And I was looking at a Logitech flightstick with a throttle controller called G X 52?? Would that suffice? Or do I need something else?
@Rivers2564 жыл бұрын
@@smaariseth T-16000M Kit plus an Oculus Rift S would be your best bet for a good experience that isn't hard on the wallet. If you have the money, get a Valve Index and a Thrustmaster Warthog and Thrustmaster TPR Pedals, or a high end flight stick and pedals from Virpil. Hope you get the chance to show your father.

Eddie I have a Rift S and a Logitech Extreme 3D pro, about a $30 joystick off amazon. Nothing crazy, has worked well for me over the course of several months in a variety of games, and it’s cheap. The headset is a bit pricy, but with all the games I play and the 3D landscapes I’ve experienced I wouldn’t gladly pick another one up in a heartbeat if my current one broke. Definitely worth it in my wyes

War Thunder was one of my first and still at the top of my favorite VR experiences. Aligning your head to look through the telescopic sights is unbelievably fun. Then airspeed becomes something more. It's your altitude, momentum, engine power.... it's throwing a heavy flying machine into the best position you can manage. And finally one of the best moments in the game for VR... an enemy outruns you in any direction and you whip your head around to see which way they went/are going to begin the chase. One second you're in an office chair, the next your fighting the good fight. Gotta love this stuff.

We may complain and hate on war thunder for perceived bias. But this is just amazing. So awesome to see what a real pilot thinks of this. Flying in cockpit view feels awesome in arcade and historical, flying full sim with VR must be next level cool. Thanks for making this video. Very well made by the way. I'm somewhat like you. I played simulators in the past .... like in the 90's. Now I'm a private pilot, and I have a setup similar to yours (probably 1/4 the cost...Thrushmaster Stick, throttle, pedals, etc, homemade cockpit/racing sim), except a gaming chair without the butt-kicker, and a Oculus Quest 2 as my headset, but I'm blown away at how realistic things have become over the years. With aviation fuel prices high at the moment, and crappy weather, I'm able to get my flying fix and actually feel like I got experience that feels like I could put it in my log book. Last October, I finished a Vans RV-8 that I'm about to fly for the first time next week. This is my second experimental build (helped my dad build/finish a RV-7 in 2014) and flight simulators give me good tail-dragger practice. Great video!

+Tony Greene From the ground up, about $2500. Forget the copper (was PVC at first) and it is closer to $2k even. Works with a number of other games too (Elite Dangerous / DCS / etc).

Likewise, mine would be a thousand times less concerned if I was caught “watching” vr porn than if she caught me playing with $6,000 setup. Look hun! Instead of paying off the rest of my car I got this, isn’t it awesome..... Hun? Hun?

Dan, I'm sorry to tell you this but I don't think you married the right woman for you. You didn't marry your mother! I sure as fuck wouldn't put up with that shit for 5 seconds! I've been married for 25 years. You sound like you married my ex, lol. Good luck with that :)

That's an amazing setup that I would give anything to have, but you literally have to be rich to have the exact set. Also, penis. 1:08
@slopedarmor8 жыл бұрын
+Lucas Solomon come on not 'literally' rich, or is everybody with a decent car also rich? : P
@lucassolomon10798 жыл бұрын
slopedarmor Good point, but you still have to have a pretty decent amount of money free for use/saved up.
@slopedarmor8 жыл бұрын
Lucas Solomon Yep, the pc setup must be pretty high on the list of priorities before anyone will buy all this : p
@lucassolomon10798 жыл бұрын
slopedarmor I'm good on the PC but it doesn't take a whole lot to actually run War Thunder anyways. I do recommend a good one though as its still an FPS type reaction game.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just get your pilots license
@mdbuehler8 жыл бұрын
+michael perussina I wish! You'd cover the cost of the whole setup in your first ~15 hours or so of actual flight training (and a minimum 40 hours is required to get your license). Plus, you can't even shoot people down once you do have it :)
@Starpilot1498 жыл бұрын
+mdbuehler I recognized the cockpit of the C-162 skycatcher in the video. It was really fun to fly as a student pilot, kinda overpowered too.

DCS is more realistic than warthunder. I have 1000+ hours in warthunder but now that I have played 500 hours on DCS, warthunder just feels like arcadie game.

Fantastic video, can't wait until my CV1 ships in April. War Thunder will be one of the first games I play. It's nice to see Gaijin supporting VR.
@DeepDuh8 жыл бұрын
Here's where I think this will be improved upon: Use something like the Vive cameras to scan the geometry of your control setup and *represent* it ingame, so basically model the game's cockpit around the physical control that you really have. Do full hand/finger tracking using external cameras or gloves. Now voila, a fully controllable cockpit including all the switches, the stick, the canopy etc.

Great video thanks. By the way, it appears that the modeling for the spin is about right. So many of us are used to flying really benign aircraft that recover from a spin in a revolution ie Cessnas, Pipers, etc... which is what makes them great GA aircraft.

Great video and commentary. I'm thrilled to know you became a real world private pilot, obtaining your certificate! My first flight lesson was at 13 years old, so I know the satisfaction of holding a certificate. Our software company has the Oculus Rift SDK, DK2, and recently received the Consumer Version. I share your passion for flying and as others have commented, your VR Flight Sim setup is second to none! Thanks for taking the time and effort in sharing both here on KZbin and with young and old alike at the various events!
@mdbuehler8 жыл бұрын
+Ellexis Thanks! Really enjoy flight in real life (working on instrument rating now), and virtual flight in the CV1 on DCS is incredibly fun. I could do either for hours on end (VR flight cheaper though, so more of that than real ;) ) People's reaction to virtual flight is always great to watch. Happy I can share part of the excitement of flight with those on the ground. Next airshow is in May, so will put a follow up together of people flying on the CV1. Neat stuff!
