DCS P51 Mustang on the Oculus Rift DK2 / Max Flight Stick

One more DCS video, this time with the P51 Mustang :) It works VERY well in the DK2. Looks great, sense of presence in the cockpit is the best of any VR game on the Rift right now. Add that to an already great simulator and the results are amazing (as you'd expect).

I know this video is old but it's nice to see someone so positive about the DK2. It generally gets shit on these days and some even complain about the resolution of the CV1. As someone who has never used any HMD aside from cardboard, I cannot wait for my CV1. The quality will be great.

oculus needs to take this idea and apply it to something like a combat pilot helmet, slaved to head movements for games like Mechwarrior Online, War Thunder, Ace Combat, especially for gear nerds like me looking for the full sim-pit experience

I think, looking at your actions in the cockpit, the headset needs some sort of haptic feedback when you touch an object. So moving your head against (or past the glass) makes a lever or rumble pack within the goggles tap or rumble a surface inside. It lets you know that you're head is knocking against something. Makes a lot of sense (if you pardon the pun). This is by far the most impressive video for using this. Good stuff.

We need some decent flight Sims on PSVR. There are only 3 flight games on it right now. One is online only and a space sim, another is some crap that has you flying as an eagle instead of flying planes, and the third is actually looking better, but still uses newer model planes, not WW2. We could really use a WW2 fighter and a casual flight sim. Flight stick support is skimpy on PS4 too, I can only confirm one of the three games mentioned earlier as supporting one.

Seems like very fluid performance. I get stutter on my DK2, i7 4,5 GHz, 16 GB RAM and GTX 980 on lowest settings :( Especially on the ground. Up in the air it's mostly 75 fps so it's ok then up there. What are your graphics settings please?

kheldar7 I'll have to check, they are turned down a bit. The airports seem to cause most of the problems with stutter. Once I get clear of there it is smooth up high / out far.

Hi there. I'm new to using flight sticks and flight sims. I have a Saitek Cyborg Evo and I'm going to have a longer session with DCS World (I've played a bit of the training). Also, I'm not planning to use anymore than the stick as an additional piece of hardware. I want realistic, or fairly realistic controls, and have done some Googling, and I don't get helpful info. I'm wondering if you're able to give me info on what pushing the stick forward, pressing the different buttons do in real life flying etc. I apologize for any dumbness in my post/message. Thanks! All the previous videos I've made used live capture of the output to the Rift. It is warped and distorted when not viewed through the Rift's lenses (you see the right eye's view in this video). I've started using the replay files played back in non-rift mode and synched back up to the video feed of me playing, which gives the MUCH better looking output you see in the War Thunder test. That was the first time I tried it, and it works so well it is the format I'm using going forward. Have three in the works right now :)

I was looking at the max flight sticks and saw "maxfighter" with the simple throttle and stick for $699. Overall do you recommend this product?

EpicTaco Overall, yes. My older version came with foot pedals with toe brakes, but they were not analog which made control (tail wheel especially) hard as brakes were all or nothing. I swapped those out for Saitek's. I believe you can order without the pedals if you want. The stick does not auto center like a normal joystick, but you adapt to that quickly. Everything else about it has been great. Mine has held up for a few years now, and it gets a lot of use.

Are you running in Direct or Extend display mode? Are you able to read any of the dials without leaning in? You have any tricks to reduce judder (manually editing config files, etc) or do you just have a really powerful rig?

Joey Szakara Extended mode with the Rift as the primary display. Larger dials you can more or less read sitting up, but you will need to lean in for a number of them. Rift as the primary helps reduce judder, as does backing off the settings (lots of detail especially at airports will make it run poorly). I've also played around with setting the Rift at 72Hz and 60Hz. That can get you less judder, but the pixel refresh seems to slow down so you get some smearing / blurr. My rig is pretty good, I7 4770k with an Nvidia 780. Curious how the Titans are handling it. The new game engine due out in a bit apparently is much better on all counts.

Also another question. I have the Alienware x51 and wanted to upgrade my graphics card from the gtx 660. Do you think a gtx 960 is a god choice? If not what is a good upgrade to suit the needs of the DK2 to run flight sims with it smoothly? Thanks.

EpicTaco The biggest problem right now with VR is the games being optimized for it. DCS even with a 970 or 780 can get poor frame rate just because the game doesn't quite do VR perfectly (but a new game engine is on the way, so no worries). War Thunder is optimized, and runs incredibly well on the 780 (max it all out, runs fine and looks great) so a 960 on an optimized game should do allright. More is always better, as you are sort of playing the game twice at the same time when drawing for each eye :)

Can you further explain the rudder pedal situation? the one i was looking at came with stick, throttle, and the pedals (without toe brakes). Whats wrong with them? Should i just order without the pedals and use the money saved to buy saitek? Again sorryand thannks for the input.

EpicTaco DCS runs pretty good in VR. You have to back things off quite a bit for a good frame rate, but that is the game's fault (and they are working on a whole new engine anyway).

EpicTaco The pedals work fine, but the brakes are either all on, or all off, like a switch. So when you hit them, it is full brakes always (will flip a tail dragger airplane unless you go on - off - on - off). The saitek pedals work like the brakes in your car, you can press half way for half brakes, lightly for hardly any, or stomp them for full brakes. Much easier to control an airplane with.

Great but there is a problem. Still cannot fly DCS without a keyboard. I doubt you have a switch for the wingtip or tail lights, or pitot heating. How do you find thw keyboard? Fumble blindly for it, and then guess what key you're pressing? xD Someone help me please!

Hey there Zach! I don't own a rift but i know the answer to your question. A good HOTAS will give you all you need for buttons that are usually on the keyboard. The rest you do with your mouse. Basically you just use your mouse to click the in-game switches. If you don't like the mouse you can move the cursor with your head and assign a button on your HOTAS to click. ED is even working on clickable radio menus for VR.

ChairOfCheese Yes, you can lean in, just not as far. Your head will get stopped a ways from the instrument panel so you can't quite read the gauges (where as DCS lets you put your face up against the panel).

tzone So far it has worked on all the modules I have tried. The P-51, T-51, A-10, FW-190, F-86, Huey, F-15, Su27. Might be a few others I'm forgetting. I haven't tried it with the combined arms vehicles yet.

Neil Pimlott I have a NVIDIA 780 and an Intel 4770k. Both overclocked, and even those are struggling to maintain 75 (you get a light judder when it drops). The new version of the SDK is supposed to fix this, and demos compiled with it run MUCH better, so we need only wait for DCS to recompile with the new SDK and this problem should go away.

bokfink1 Yeah, figured out how to turn down the volume from the source clip just in this last video, and even then 50% seems too loud :) I have tried War Thunder, it just needs a little more work to be playable. It worked great on my DK1 but the IPD is fixed and way off for the DK2 so I see double. Will definitely have a video up for that one as soon as I'm able to play it :)

bokfink1 Yeah, I play WT with my son (and even my dad on occasion :) ) which is lots of fun. The seat is from an F-106 Delta Dart. Packed the parachute with pillows, and it is actually quite comfy for hours of gaming :)

+caballote caballo Think I understand. You can see farther, as it is life sized. Imagine that image on the right not being distorted, and being so big it was all that you could see. Seeing it really small like that makes some detail appear lost.

+vadermonkey55 I have the CV1 now, and the resolution is MUCH better! In the Huey / Mustang / F15 you can read nearly all the gauges without trouble, and with barely leaning in you can even read the writing on the switches now. It is a big improvement over the DK2, and works VERY well in DCS :)

falloutbr Go ahead and get the latest SDK and install it. Then, set the Rift display mode to extended. Then install this Oculus service manager : www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/2c6qqc/updated_unofficial_oculus_service_manager_by/ and use it to stop the Oculus services. If you launch DCS after they are stopped, it will work just like it would with .3 SDK and you are all set.

Andy McEvoy That is the one my brother uses, it works great. The game is free too (comes with an A10, a Frogfoot, and a T-51 the unarmed two seat Mustang). The other aircraft cost, but go on sale all the time.

Working on a new one with the CV1 and an RV-4 for comparison to real life (sort of a "baby warbird"). A bit tied up with work, but hoping to finish collecting footage and get it together the next month or so. DCS works very well with the CV1, especially with space / time warp enabled. When you crank up the super sampling, things get quite sharp! Not perfect yet, but very good :)
