Hi Malcolm, I was wondering your thoughts on whether or not doing the Evolve Artist program would be worthwhile for someone interested in impressionist painting? I ultimately would like to be doing impressionist landscapes and am hoping a program like evolve would give me the foundations necessary to produce professional art. however it is a very big investment (a fellow South African here), so I am wondering whether or not it is the best route to take?

Not for impressionism. It is 100% realism. It is thorough and intensive and much better than a fine art degree. In that respect it is good value. In their advanced module, sold separately after module one, at the end they deal with a concept called puddling. This leans to a looser painting style approaching impressionism. I hope that helps.

Thank you Malcolm for this introduction to Evolve. I’m considering this course, but have reservations. Yourself ,as a impressionistic painter, would you recommend this course for someone who wants to paint in this “looser” style? The Evolve work is so tight and no sign of any artistic styles in the examples I’ve seen on line. I understand that Evolve is a foundation course, he sent its restrictions. In you opinion, would this course hamper expressive painting when your working on your own, outside the course?

It's tough to answer that in a few words. Yes it is tight and follows a fixed path similar to a classical system from years ago. You will learn the foundations of value, proportional drawing and the concept of edges. Only in year two does the program end with a looser impressionist approach. So if formal art school is for you then I would say take the Evolve program. But if you want a quick dive into loose, expressive painting then this will not be ideal.

You get taught basic drawing with templates at first. Mostly it is about proportions and shapes. All taught along the way.
