I'd bet money if you chucked some weighted Cabomba in there (I saw you say you had a hard time growing it before) it would grow like a weed since they produce so much nitrate. It just soaks it up like mad and grows wild and while they'll play in it and pick at it, they can't really pick it apart and make a mess with it. I live in Japan and they sell it as "the goldfish plant" lol. Cute little guys, best of luck with em!
@christinaiscurious6774
@christinaiscurious6774 2 жыл бұрын
Side note - if you want to see them go wild boil/microwave a little piece of broccoli (not too soggy it'll make a mess if it's soft) and hang it on a suction hook inside. It's hilarious and keeps them busy for hours and you'll end up with a bare white stem left xD

100% understand your reservations about naming them. I have turtles and frequently house them with minnows and feeder goldfish. (Good for the diet and to keep them active). One goldfish must have bonded with one of my turtles because they lived peacefully in harmony for over 3 years. It was great for me because the fish would help keep the turtle tank clean. Until one day, my turtle (what I suspect was purely out of instinct) nipped him behind the head along the spine pretty bad. I thought he was a goner. I don't like watching them suffer, and selfishly I didn't want to have to clean up the mess in the turtle tank, so I immediately scooped him up put him in a hospital tank and nursed him back to health and now he lives in his own tank. I named him Spartacus, because I figured if he lived that long fighting, he deserves both a name and his freedom!

Best of luck my dude. Ranchus are essentially the pug of fish, and I wouldn't be surprised if they developed some sort of sickness eventually, regardless of if they're kept in pristine conditions. I would LOVE a super quick “hardscape 101” video going over the common different stones/pebbles (seiryu, dragon, etc) and wood used in the hobby! Being new to the hobby and binging all your videos, the different types of hardscapes are fun to learn about but also a bit overwhelming lol 😅. Different properties of the stones, pH or erosion considerations over time, if they are available in a hardware store or more ~speciality~ stones. Things like that. Love your videos - thanks for all the advice, honesty, and really positive attitude!

If you're looking to learn in order to aquascape you'll always be better off researching on Google, KZbin never has enough information in each video, even if you watch a bunch from different channels. I had some of these (well, I think we called them Moore's) when I was in my 20s. They were about the size of a quarter when I got them, and when I gave them away, they were as big as my hand! I used an undergravel filter (because, as you said, they are dirty!) and when I would clean their tank the water came out black! On a plus note, I would keep the dirty water in a 5 gallon bucket and use it to water the houseplants. They loved it!

Gulping air as the issue for swim bladder is basically a myth. Duckweed is an excellent food for Goldfish. They should be fine eating it from the surface. It's also alive and growing, so it won't rot in the tank like leftover bits of that frozen spinach might. I've fed my fancy Goldfish a combination of floating pellets, sinking pellets, and dried seaweed for over a year now and he's doing great, no swimming issues. Wishing you all the best with your new Goldies 💖

MD, fancy goldfish like Ranchu need much more filtration and water space. The hangover filter is not enough. Your setup may work for natural body-shaped goldfish like comment or bristol shubunkin. As your Ranchu grows, you need a bigger tank and stronger filter like a sump. Good luck.

MD, gulping air to have swim bladder disease is a Myth, I have been feeding mine duckweed 2X to 3X a week with all floating pellets for a long time and not a single problem. Besides, duckweed is healthy for them that prevents Swim bladder infection and intensifies their color. The maim cause of their SBI is temperature and over feeding. Fancy Goldfish temp is on the higher end compare to their pond cousins. Ideal will be around 75 to 78F. Also feed them lightly daily or every other day and weekly water change of 50% and they’ll stay healthy. Fun video and thanks for making contents for us.

I have tons of plants in with my huge fancy goldfish I planted them in rock wool with root tabs in terracotta pots. Amazon Swords and Crinum Calimastratum are gorgeous and they don’t eat them. Also Marimo moss balls that they roll along the bottom of their 1020 liter tank. I also created rock sculptures with marine epoxy and silicone. They are just too dirty for substrate and then getting an impaction isn’t worth the risk. They love cooked veggies. Generally anything green that I have for dinner I blanch and give them some. Also Repashy Gold gel food is amazing if you have access to it! I make it up about once a week and mix in pellets and veggies. They go crazy for it.

I never get over how you can take a few rocks and turn them into something beautiful. There are some easy to grow plants that goldfish don’t tend to eat. The tougher plants like Java fern and the larger Anubias varieties should be safe, especially since you are offering spinach, since they will definitely prefer that. They also like zucchini! I also feel like the fish would pop a lot more with a black background, but that’s just an aesthetic preference, of course. I also like the idea another commenter had about adding a monstera plant.

This tank looked absolutely amazing. But I do see some problems. I've had experience of growing baby ranchu and oranda goldfish in almost exactly the same sized tank, and it's going to be difficult. for you. For the amount of bio load these babys make, I'm almost 100% you will need more filtration. At least a large spongefilter. And I strongly suggest getting a very good bennificial bacteria colony going before adding these cuties. There ammonia levels can jump significantly overnight without a good cycle in the tank. But I wish you luck man

Wouldn't a bit of tubing work the same to connect the floating ring? As duckweed goes, I'm throwing some in my large tank, blackskirt tetra and angelfish eat it. No idea, how that would cause issues to goldfish. Some food like TetraMin Granules needs to be soaked, otherwise it's like feeding baby ducks fresh rolls (fatal). Too much bloodworms is also bad, but again so is feeding fish just with flakes and pellets. I understand it's probably better to just put it away, frozen spinach is nice alternative. However some (larger) floating plants would look nice and pull the excess nutrients.

Good looking build there :) Glad to see you back at goldfish. Your Ranchu will move that ring very quickly and the duck weed will be gone in a day or so any way and it won't hurt them. Also this breed of fish is quite poor in general, if you really want good success you should start with Comet goldfish, there are a lot more hardier and enjoy the warmer room all year round temperatures you have. I cannot wait to see your face and reactions when these grow up, they get big, they will move your rocks around bang in to them, you name it :) oh and they get massive, I have had to put all of our fish in a 6ft tank now, as 22 years we had our oldest goldfish for and she was massive by the end. Now we have got her baby's and one of them is 8 now and absolutely massive he is about a foot long easy, he smashes the place up when he is mating, so be prepared if they are healthy they last a long time and get very big! Thanks, for taking the time to document and share. Cheers.

I have a black ranchu and they're known for their bad eyesight (they're basically blind) and I trained it to know it's feeding time by knocking at the glass twice and it will go to one corner of the tank and I'll feed the other goldfish at the other corner and then feed the black one in it's corner. If I don't do this, it won't be able to compete with the others.

I'm glad I saw this right before shifting my fancy goldfish to a bigger tank. I didn't realize the food tips. I'm jealous you still have a Maidenhead shop. My local one closed years ago :/

Duckweed is really good food tho. If you don't mind processing it, you could still feed it to your fish. @MarksShrimpTanks has a video on it. I recommend you'd check it out! And rounded river rocks are amazing! I love the colourful arrangement you made with these!

Two things i gotta say, First, u cant be as lazy with this tank as you are with the others, frequent water change is a must not just to dilute the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates but also because goldfish produces growth inhibitor hormones that polute the water, if you wanna have optimal growth, water change. Second thing, the back side of that intake tube might be a hazard for your pugs to get stuck, maybe attach something along the length to block access.

Never had any issues with my fantail goldfish eating duck weed but they don’t have it all the time. I buy it every couple of months, but I don’t get chance to grow it out because it’s gone within days. 😂 I do give them a variety of foods as I do with my tropical fish too. My goldfish are chunky they’re the size of my hand and aren’t quite 2 yet. They’ve also been breeding this summer too and their fry are all ready for new homes now. If I had the space I would keep them myself as they’re super cute. 🥰 So I wouldn’t stress out about other peoples views on duck weed you do you and do it your own way, that’s all I did. 😊

Would love to see you do a video where you start with plants that need to grow in, the plants you use would cost hundreds of dollars and are not easily available everywhere - would be cool to see you do a tank that uses smaller, beginner plants and update over time on it growing to look like your most of your tanks look when you build them out now... I love your tanks but cannot find good local plants and online with shipping would be insane for anything but small or nano tanks... come on MD, you can do it!

Good luck and they're super cute it's hard not to get attached to our water pets. Have you looked at Dr. Novak's channel on anoxic filtration? He uses kitty litter and an undergravel filter plate to complete the nitrogen cycle for his goldfish, because apparently fancy goldfish are very sensitive to nitrates so he developed a system to help them live many years without the problems they usually have. Anoxic filtration just helps maintain very good water quality just like the natural processes found at the bottom of the ponds and lakes in nature. Vary good as always and looking forward to seeing these guys mature. Cheers! 🤗

I’ve heard you refer to larger stones in your scapes as “cobbles.” I don’t know what you consider “cobble stones” but here in NYC they are the large, very rough-hewn rectangular-or-squarish stones they used to pave streets with in the old days (up to the early 1900s.) In the West Village/Chelsea some of the older streets & back alleys have exposed cobblestones. They’re a b... to drive on or walk on with heels.
